Greenery on things where it doesnt belong

Ordered baked beans on toast (we'll come back to that) today.

Came with a clump of greenery on top. Salad garni.

What person in their right mind does this?

And OF COURSE it was bloody sourdough. Because NO other bread exists these days. And it was not toasted. It was barely within sight of the toaster I reckon

So it turns up with its green clump and then, to make matters much worse, it came with some butter pats but THE BEANS WERE ALREADY ON THE UNTOASTED TOAST.

So I scraped off my beans to try to spread the butter but of course this was a wasted effort because the butter wouldnt adhere to the untoasted toast due to the bean juice so I ended up just smearing it around while it stuck to my knife.

Anyway back to the greenery. I cant tell you how many bits of rocket have gone flying down the road before when served atop something, because of course a bit of wind will pick up salad and send it flying into the face of an unsuspecting pedestrian.

And dont get me started on bloody pea shoots.

YANBU - Garnishing perfectly adequate meals with frilly extras is a performative nonsense to make something out of nothing

YABU - I really like bits of salad on top of a full English and you're only posting this because your OH has the football on anyway and you're bored.

My other half will only eat white, processed shit bread with no flavour, texture or anything nice at all.

I presume you're from the USA? My American friend finds it very strange that we eat beans on toast whereas they're usually used at a BBQ or something as a side. Full English brekkie freaked her out when she saw the beans, but not as much as mushy peas.

But, don't knock a chip butty. Home made chips, has to be King Edward potatoes, between two bits of bread is sometimes just what the soul needs.

South African here and second your American friend's view about beans at a BBQ. My dad always did this when we were growing up (kept in the fridge so nice and cold). Not sure how prevalent it was outside our house though. Don't recall ever having hot beans on toast until I came to the UK - love both versions now! And hot beans in jackets with cheese - yum!

Surreyblah · 18/06/2026 00:00

Bean haterz posters are U!

Woodfiresareamazing2 · 18/06/2026 00:02

I love poached eggs on toast as a breakfast treat in a cafe. My favourite cafe, that had always made perfect soft poached eggs on hot buttered (normal, not sourdough) toast, one day randomly decided to serve it covered in chopped chives. Literally covered.

They were "trying something new".

I am allergic to anything in the onion type family, including chives.

I had to ask them to make me a fresh serving, and they seemed quite put out.

I referred them back to their menu item, which mentioned eggs, bread and butter. Not a word about chives.

They made me a fresh serving.

How can you hate fresh herbs?

No wonder colorectal cancers are on the rise.

I put mine in my bum, problem solved!

LivelyGreyShark · 18/06/2026 00:10

Oh i assumed this was about the five second rule, twice this week on school pickup i've seen small children drop sweets / biscuits on the floor to pick it up and their mum tell them its fine to eat.

I was once confused and appalled because I was served a jacket potato with beans and cheese where the cheese was invisible, under the beans!

I was like, "oh, I ordered beans and cheese"

And she replied, "the cheese is under the beans"

!!!!!???????!!!!!!!???????!!!!!

I've seen threads about this.

sheisforrealatiger · 18/06/2026 00:27

As if 20% of people want a clump of rocket on their beans?!

(Unless they’re even weirder than that and they like untoasted toast with no butter on!)

ItWasGreatWhenItAllBegan · 18/06/2026 00:38

I could have written your post. My husband and I moan about the same thing every time we go out for brunch. 😅

Completely agree - I loathe sprout type garnishes on top of breakfast/brunch time meals inparticular. I do not mind chives, a little parsley or even a sprig of chervil which can add to the meal. But an enormous clump of sprouts atop a poached egg is vile.

And the prevalence of sour dough seemingly to the exclusion of all other types of bread is infuriating. It suits some meals but dominates other dishes, The crust if toasted properly is too hard to cut easily with poached eggs and untoasted, and barely warm, as most places seem to serve it the flavour is too strong, the texture unpleasant.

It has nothing to do with not liking ‘proper’ bread a 5 grain is great, a proper white loaf perfect. Sour dough is always sliced too thickly, the crust too dominant, it doesn’t absorb yolk and it just slides around on your plate leaving a slightly unpleasant aftertaste.

It’s ok well toasted with jam. A nightmare in any dish that requires a knife and fork to cut it.

edit- spelling

I hear you. Salad and dressing (usually with a shit load of raw red onion) really ruins the comfort of jacket potato beans and cheese 😢

Well, I must be on my own....as I don't feel 'right' if I haven't had a bit of greenery on the side with my meal :(
Although....that said, breakfast is not one of those meals.

Wonderlandpeony · 18/06/2026 01:32

I once had fish and chips in a pub served on a bed of lettuce, the peas were missing so I wondered if they'd substituted them with the lettuce.

I actually complained to the waiter as the lettuce was all mushy and it looked gross, but he just looked at me like I was mad.

southerngirl10 · 18/06/2026 02:10

Bloody hell! I'd need a lie down after that, and some counselling.

darksideofthetoon · 17/06/2026 21:55

You don’t have to convince me.

I think plant foods are overrated in so many ways and the plant based mantra is a load of nonsense.

I’m 90% animal based and never felt better.

What's the other 10%?
I tried carnivore once for a month absolutely loved how it made me feel but I just got bored.
But now my diet has gone so bad, I'd like to give it another go

WhatTheHellsGoingOn · 18/06/2026 03:12

I clicked on this thinking it was going to be an eco post about non-native flora being introduced into urban landscapes - this is so much better 😂

CoffeeAndCats3 · 18/06/2026 04:47

I like greenery, and sourdough.
But. The beans should come in a pot on the side. The bread should be toasted. You can then decide if you want to butter your bread before putting the beans on yourself.
The greenery should also be on the side.
It's all about practicalities for me.

FreshAirandSunshine · 18/06/2026 04:52

Cress on top of nachos is the worst I’ve experienced. Impossible to pick out all the cress from the salsa, guacamole, sour cream and melty cheese. It wasn’t just pointless, it negatively impacted on the dish, imo at least.

WarthogWoman · 18/06/2026 05:00

I love beans. I love greens. I love sourdough (unpopular opinion) They should not go together

Malasana · 18/06/2026 05:05

I love baked beans and I love beans on toast.

I love sourdough.

Beans on toast does not require butter.

Pea shoots are glorious.

There - I said what I said 🙈

66babe · 18/06/2026 05:33

I paid £14 yesterday for avocado toast with poached egg and a pea shoot foam ! What the hell was a foam ? Looked like it had been blended and shot on the plate while all frothy
The utter look of disgust on her face when I asked for a bit of butter and some tea
I’m sure the roasted blended macchiato with oat milk or almond is lovely but some PG will do me thanks
Well done England 🎉🎉🎉

ItsNotMeEither · 18/06/2026 05:38

Forget the salad garnish, that can easily be pushed aside! The real crime here is the untoasted bread (eww Sourdough too).

I want TOAST! I want it toasted, not given a slight suntan if you squint into the light. I want my toast made from bread!

I don't mind if other people want sourdough, but toast should be toast and sourdough should be an option.

Contraryjane · 18/06/2026 05:58

And Another Thing!
If you order something that requires butter, eg toast, toasted teacake, or a cheese scone, they never give you enough and it’s always cold and won’t spread. Usually two teeny pats. I always have to ask for more and they look at me as if I’m a right lardy.

TheNoonBell · 18/06/2026 06:18

I had something similar recently, a rather expensive full english served on a bed of rocket. They'd even made their own not particularly great baked beans.

Poor DH was traumatised by the whole experience and kept mumbling "why..."

Icantbebothered · 18/06/2026 06:21

I’m ok with the green stuff. But Coleslaw, or worse ‘Slaw’ is the food of the devil and should not be used to garnish anything

Howmanycatsistoomany · 18/06/2026 06:25

Can't stand sourdough, don't mind pea shoots but ffs the only garni that belongs on beans on toast is grated cheddar.

I ordered poached egg on toast at a posh new cafe last year and there were violets and leaves all over it. Omg the texture 🤮
