Inconsequential but HIGHLY irritating things your DH does

I’m not talking ‘fails to do any housework’ or ‘won’t parent his own kids’ but minor irritations that make you want to scream but you can’t because its so petty. For me

Refuses to use the automatic windscreen wiper. Instead he waits until he has no visibility and then manually flips the wiper on once. In heavy rain he’s doing it every couple of seconds. Just put the bloody auto wipers on!!

Unloads the dishwasher but leaves select things stacked up ‘near’ the cupboard or drawer they live in rather than putting them away. Apparently they are left there to ‘thoroughly dry’.

Rage!!!

Gets water everywhere after having a shower. Floor , window, top of loo. Towel wet through. Bath mat soaked. I honestly don’t know what he does

One of my (female) children does this.
Drives me bonkers

deeahgwitch · 17/06/2026 17:28

Unpacks the dishwasher and leaves lots of stuff on the countertop because he doesn’t know where to put it.
He’s only been living in the house for 25 years and the kitchen has remained the same.

We have been eating dinner at 6.00-6.15 for the last 53 years. When I call out that dinner is on the table he says Oh! all surprised as if we have never eaten at that time of day before. One of these days it's going to end up on his head.

😂

My ex-MIL once boasted that she ironed everything including towels (?!) and knickers. Waxed lyrical on the loveliness of ironed undies. My now exH blithely stated 'oh, Bats knickers are too small to iron'. MIL made a cat's bum face, she obviously thought I was a hussy 😂

Hahaha! How did she find the time ?.that's mad. 😊

QueenOfHiraeth · 17/06/2026 17:47

It's quibbles like these that remind us of the good stuff. I joke with DH that I only keep him because I don't want to have to put the bins out myself but we both know that wouldn't save him for 40+ years.

Lots of my quibbles seem to be widespread - leaving plastic stuff on the drainboard after the dishwasher, taking pans out of the dishwasher to make more room then leaving them unwashed in the sink, etc. but he also, despite being an adult who has lived in this house for 30 years just as I have, will leave things in a little cluster on the worktop because he "doesn't know where they go" WTAF???
My kitchen is a bit dated now and has shiny granite worktops. He washes his hands in the kitchen sink then, rather than using a towel immediately, insists on shaking his hands off first which puts blobs of water all over the worktops that he, being a man, can't see!

Oldmamabear · 17/06/2026 17:59

Ohh loads...answering a question wirh a question...answering a question with a reply that clearly demonstrates hes not even listened to the question....taking the credit for my ideas when he simply agreed to them and contributed some minor obvious consideration that I had already covered off....asking me what's for dinner every day when its not actually my decision, I only inherit the task of cooking it...

Rattymare · 17/06/2026 18:10

Now an ex.. didn't live together.

He would always turn up at my house and go in the bathroom for a poo. Grrrr.... he had just left his own house ffs !

Pardon the ignorant Texan. 😁

Uses a paper towel to do the drying up instead of a tea towel. Such a waste and bad from the environment!

Omg, I wasn’t going to say anything but I’ve had more than one comment now about drying dishes with a paper towel. That really was not the point of the message or of this thread.
The dishes come out of the dishwasher so they are mostly dry, except the bottom of mugs or bowls. I simply touch these with a paper towel so they are perfectly dry when they go in the cupboard. I don’t use a tea towel because it doesn’t absorb as well. The paper towel dries up and is then used to wipe kitchen surfaces throughout the day. Before you mention the environmental impact - I hate filthy kitchen cloths so if I used them to wipe kitchen surfaces I’d have to wash them constantly and use water and electricity

I've stopped making spaghetti bolognese/carbonara ... anything involving spaghetti really, as I can't stand the way he eats it.

Can't you use pasta shapes instead? I always do, as I can't be bothered twirling spaghetti on a fork.

67eleven · 17/06/2026 18:54

stirs tea/coffee not in a circular motion but from one side of the cup to another making a loud dinging noise like a bell.

Nope he’s Essex born and bred! All his family spoke the same 🤷‍♀️

These things seem inconsequential but in a LTR they really are not.

Read the famous blog post "My wife left me because I left my dishes by the sink"

Thank you for this. I’m feeling rage just reading this thread.

I do love my DH, but performative sneezing, slurping hot tea, not unscrunching wet washing, leaving dishes in the sink, putting unsorted washing by my side of the bed, grumbling under his breath about all the things I haven’t done and all he has to do really grinds my gears!

N27 · 17/06/2026 20:15

Also, turns off the auto climate control EVERY time he uses the car. I like it at 20, set to auto, the car will do what it needs to do to make me happy,

he will turn temp down and fans up, then fans down, then temp up, then fans up, then all switched off. And on and on it goes for the whole journey.

MrJumpyLegs · 17/06/2026 20:38

@Nationalaverageyes to telling me things as if o never knew them. Mine is usually to do with diet, exercise, weightloss.

also yes to meno. I have to have stern words with myself. He might he playing FUCKING INDIE MUSIC on a loop 24/7, the same playlist over and over. But it would be a lot quieter if I left him, and not in a completely good way.

Another one. My job involves very deep thinking. As a result, I am very good at zoning the world out and getting very deep and lost in my own thoughts.

And when someone speaks or even walks into the room, I will jump out of my skin because I'm so IN MY HEAD that it's like a jump scare.

It's a me problem, not a him problem. My son makes me jump. The dog barking or doorbell ringing makes me jump.

But he gets really offended if it's him that makes me jump. Like, actively storms off in a huff sometimes.

Like dude, YOU made ME jump why are you the one being all dramatic and huffy about it? I'm not!

Oh i'm a jumper too. I have 4 sons only 2 at home now but for tall rugby playing boys, they sure could creep about. I could be washing up, making dinner, ect in my zone and I'd NEVER hear them enter the room. They'd just suddenly appear at the side of me like the ghost of Christmas past. I would almost drop dead from shock. They'd swear blind they shouted to let me know they were there.

garlictwist · 17/06/2026 20:57

Puts his socks in the wash all bunched up so they come out the drier still wet.

Yes!! Why do they do this. Every. Single. Time. And it's my bloody car!

That's so weird. Does he bring his own bag or find one of yours?

He finds one of mine I don’t think he realises the cost of a bag for life. Works out cheaper to get a roll of decent bin bags and there’s him using a bag for life.😂😂😂 I end up putting it in the kitchen bin anyway so it’s not spilling out in the wheelie bin which has happened before.

Kickinthenostalgia · 17/06/2026 23:25

Another one is he always leaves stuff on my side of the bed, I generally go to bed after him as he gets up early and every single damn night he’s left something of his on my side of the bed. I just throw it on top of him now. If it breaks it’s his own fault. I literally have one bedside table and he’s got ample of storage and space on his side.

or he’ll leave parcels hanging around and I’ll say to him make sure you break them boxes up and everytime he answers, you can’t have a go at me yet, you’ve not given me a chance to move them and break the boxes up, I always say to him because I know he’ll leave the boxes and I’ll end up doing it so I’m just reminding him 🥱

Do you not have tea towels ?

Urgh no! They've been proved to be extremely unhygienic, never ever dry dishes with a dish towel 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢
