After decades of disappointment I've pretty much given up on watching England with any hope.

I have Scottish in laws and love the place anyway but after seeing all the videos of the tartan army in Boston I'd so love for them to win ( however unlikely that may be!)

Experience,.... from 1977, long time to hold a grudge, ye sassenach 😂
We have evolved greatly since those times.
Please don't deprive us of our hopeless optimism, thats all we have 😂

Um. You said you wanted Scotland to win.
I am still waiting for a single Scottish person to say they want England to win……
I might have a long wait.

Och, I have this argument with my dp, all the time. You are our ndn, we absolutely should support Engerland.
I have deduced that it's your pundits that pisses off our menfolks, with the slipping in of '66 at every available op. 😂

Sad, but true
C'mon England (unless they meet us in the final) 😂😂😂

Ach, she’s tryin’ that hard tae wind folk up she’s practically creakin’. Same patter as the other numpty — lights are on, but the meter’s no been topped up since 2004.

An old Scottish traditional song - I know a happy home far, far away, where they drink whisky nearly every day, ham and eggs they never see, dirty water for my tea — and that’s why they included me in olde Boston’s home…😍

The Tartan Army has rolled into Boston and they’re doing Scotland proud. Singing this old favourite, they turn a simple tune into a travelling tradition that fits any household, any background, anyone who hears it. It’s the kind of song that makes a city feel like home, even across the ocean.
Because everyone knows: No Scotland, no party.

Have you ever watched the Quiet Man? It's a family favourite of ours. Wee Michaleen oge saying that Sean was from "Boston, Massachusetts, USA" 😂

We should support our neighbours? Do the French support Spain or Poland support Germany?

No, my husband was able to earn a lot of money as a drilling manager….
i didn’t want to leave London.
Believe what you want.
All the Aberdonians hated the Glaswegians. So it wasn’t just the English.
They spent a lot of time telling me about the perils of Glasgow.

So you never caught the last train tae Glasgow Central?

Only in Scotland.
we have lived in loads of countries and everyone else was fabulous.
Quote from my husband when asked if he would like to go back to Aberdeen or go to work in Kuwait, ‘ I will take the bullet in Kuwait thanks’.

What an absolute fanny you are

Thank you.

Shouldn’t be difficult to work it out from context but some folk are hard of comprehension. Must be the horrible hard water down south. Grin

No need for the snark! I acknowledged my error before your reply.

And you could not be more wrong about my location.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 19/06/2026 19:59

I hadn’t thought about The Quiet Man in years. It was always on when I was a wean because my dad adored John Wayne, so it just became part of the background at home.

Amazing how one tiny reminder can bring it all rushing back. I’ve even got a photo of my dad, bare‑backing John Wayne on the back of his couch, wearing his cowboy hat 🤣

During lockdown I bought a print of a painting by the Dublin Artist who painted it. Met him on Twitter 😂.

It's of John and Maureen O'Hara in the Quiet man. The things we did in lockdown 😱.

I bought it for my husband and got it framed and it's now on the wall in my hall.

Everybody loves it.

At least it's better than the rest of the absolute wastes of money I spent then out of complete boredom 😳

That's hilarious!

Why are the English fans so interested in how Scotland are getting on? Smacks of jealousy - and we all know which team is better, so it must be the fans and the attention that the tartan army are getting that is getting under their skin 😂

FloodlightsOnTheSquare · 20/06/2026 12:24

There’s a real bitterness I think, that comes from being the better team, but quite widely disliked, whereas we’re shite but well loved.

You're right, very bitter, that isn't banter. I think they are jealous that the Tartan Army have been so welcomed and loved. I'm sure many English folk will be embarrassed by these types of videos.

Murica · 20/06/2026 12:41

England is playing in Boston next week. I expect they'll be even more charming and well behaved and generous and cheerful because they'll have seen how much everyone loved the Scots being that way. Right?

I don’t think many folk outside of the UK have Scottish football on their radar. They’ve been largely absent from international competition for decades. Who has played for them in recent decades that would be internationally recognised? To say they are well loved is a bit of a stretch. Yeah the are having fun in Boston which is great to see. However, I would think most people outside of the UK wouldn’t be able to name any of their squad. Of course that may change if they do well going forward.

I don’t think it’s true to say the England team are disliked either- they have genuine world class players- I believe the Germans in particular adore Kane, the Spanish love Bellingham- he took the time to learn Spanish etc. Beckham is doing wonders for USA football. Lots of positives these days- some really wonderful role models in the England squad past and present. Not sure what there is to dislike.

Yep, largely absent though- 1998 before then? I’m not trying to be rude or controversial- I always cheer on home nations- loved watching Bale for Wales. Just stating what I see as facts.
They’re not really very well known internationally as a team are they? They’re not producing world class players on anywhere near the same scale as England- men and women.
Maybe as a country this needs addressing at the grass roots level.
