George’s education costs

Honest23 · 16/06/2026 17:53

Who here would honestly happily contribute to George’s education costs?

Reported to be £68000 a year at Eton.

As far as I remember, Harry did manage to pass 11 GCSEs. That is a lot, more than most. Some of my brothers were doing exams at the same time as William and Harry so I remember. He then did less well at A level and lost focus/maybe started partying, don’t know. Some kids struggle with the transition to A level.
It is hardly “thick”, just more average.
And these days with the harder GCSEs failure rates for maths and English sit at a whopping third. So if Harry is supposedly thick what does that make all those youngsters.

Araminta1003 · 19/06/2026 07:05

It is one of the problems with our education system that GCSE history is seen as difficult and so a lot of kids drop it and take geography instead. So some kids drop history as early as year 8 and primary is all about maths and English with a cursory dive into 20 century in year 6 and then KS3 I think. My DC did more Greek, Romans and Egyptians before that. Then in year 7 British history, Tudors etc. I just looked up common entrance syllabus and also only takes you until 1914.

So there are loads of kids not studying the Second World War and Cold War at school in any depth at all. It sort of is visited in KS3 briefly. 35 per cent of kids then do GCSE history.

Harry is not thick, he did quite well, is just not overly academic. However he proved himself as an army officer.

MauriceTheMussel · 19/06/2026 09:35

“Just more average”…but the price of their education isn’t “average”.

GCSE History is neither here nor there when it comes to the obvious of not wearing a Nazi uniform complete with swastika when you’re TWENTY.

Except when he boasted about how many people he had shot dead in Afghanistan . For someone who worries about his security he has little insight into what could trigger someone to look for payback, maybe he missed that lecture at Sandhurst.

You are repeating tabloid spin .
I’ve read Spare. He didn’t boast

Ukisgaslit · 19/06/2026 10:18

I can see a new pattern here and those pushing the royalist view.

They will often start a post by stating ‘ I’m not a royalist……and then go on to regurgitate all the disproven PR ( they bring in money / they work hard/ they are neutral / they don’t interfere - all demonstrably incorrect )

It is now rather shameful to continue to support the Windsors - now that some of their coverups are being revealed internationally .
So there’s that aspect - they need to distance yourself ( think on that maybe)

Along with this is an attempt to paint legitimate questions eg
‘William and Charles what did do you know and when ?’
as extremism .

Its wrong . Decent people will continue to press for answers , justice and reform re the Windsors .

countrylife00 · 19/06/2026 10:56

If you knew your royals, it was Harry who dressed up as a Nazi. Not William. It is William who is the RAF pilot. Not Harry.
Are you aware that all service personnel can get school fees paid?

@Recklessismymiddlename
@38thparallel

Nothing wrong with a referendum and nothing wrong with adding other non binding questions to a ballot paper . Lots of countries do this as a way of trying to improve the democratic voice

I don’t favour a referendum at the moment .
I favour reform as a first step .

Start with removing kings consent - that is a medieval nonsense and more importantly it is a slap in the face to our so called democracy.

Start with placing the Windsors under the law - all law - including tax law ( at the moment they can pick and choose which bits they’ll recognise )

Start with proper open scrutiny of their income streams from the tax payer . Detailed accounts - not the current situation where the Windsors decide what to declare and it is then rubber stamped ( this does not apply to the crown estate as far as I know as despite the deliberately confusing name is fully managed by an independent body )

Reveal the true costs including security .

Demographics will take care of the rest. Their real remaining support is women 65+
It’s literally dying off .

I agree with all your proposals even though - on balance at the moment - I’d keep them.

@Peacewillcome was right to mention Wonderland yesterday. It has become very "cabbages and kings", I feel like I am an oyster:

"O Oysters," said the Carpenter,
"You've had a pleasant run!
Shall we be trotting home again?"
But answer came there none
And this was scarcely odd, because
They'd eaten every one.

Who cares?! You’re running an argument based on one royal, William. However, you’re clearly dodging Andy, the other helicopter pilot.

William got, what, ABC at A Level? In a classroom ratio of maybe 1:5? No expenses spared on tutors etc, not needing to get a weekend job to pay for upcoming university like plenty of other kids and the best he could muster was ABC. Yikes. So, yeah, thick as mince.

BlueSkiesAndSunshiiine · 19/06/2026 12:59

The money spent on his education wouldn't even buy every child in the state school system a new pencil.

FatRosie · 19/06/2026 13:26

He got 2As and a C. Decent grades when he was 18. There wasn't an A star then.

ha ha yes! Reminds me of Radio 4s ‘Just a minute’. I would give A* on speaking without hesitation, but I’m afraid it’s a flunk on speaking without repetition or deviation from the subject.

Well Tatler says A B C. However, it’s irrelevant. He was never submitting an application for the job of King. And there-in lies the point. From every angle, moral, practical, if a system is hereditary it won’t get the best candidate as there is only one candidate. It is quite absurd. If the role were without personal gain, power and influence, fewer people would mind however what is steadily being revealed is the corruption and self serving nature of the royals and that is driving the trend away from supporting them. Not yet rioting in the street but eyes are opening.

You cannot even get his A level results right.
Get your head out of the tabloids and stop believing all the tripe you read.
Pray do tell us what job you do, because it better be more important than a RAF pilot or Air Ambulance pilot?

Peacewillcome · 19/06/2026 17:49

its the first time I’ve heard Tatler described as a tabloid, but I’ll grant you it’s not a regular read of mine. Short of asking to see the original certificates, seems like @MauriceTheMussel was correct though
( good knowledge for the pub quiz)

https://www.tatler.com/gallery/how-the-royals-did-in-their-a-levels

cant resist adding another reference from MEN (tabloid??) also agreeing with Maurice and a quote as articles of this type are usually trotted out to give comfort to A level
candidates from more modest backgrounds While you could expect the best private education to give you the best grades, this hasn't really been the case for the Royals, as they have a real mixed bag of exam results under their belts.

I am not sure why Maurice’s job ‘had better be more important’ unless of course
they too have benefited from a background and education Equivalent to royalty.

How well did the Royal Family perform in their GCSEs and A-Levels?

As results day looms, Tatler reveals how the Royal Family did in their school examinations

I'm no royalist but we are talking about a teenage boy who has lost his mum in a brutal high profile accident that shocked the world. In the circumstances they were decent results.

Can you imagine being a Mum and having no compassion for a lad who lost their mother.
This lot on MN are something else. He had to watch his parents antics being played out to the world. I am glad some of us are able to be kind.

I understand your compassion - when I saw the photos of William and Harry, in the Tatler article, I felt it too. However, I am perfectly capable of wishing them the very best and also to criticise the slow moving, darkly hidden institution of the monarchy.
