AIBU to say Mumsnet has some particularly bonkers opinions?

coulditbeme2323 · 15/06/2026 11:37

I have been a long time MN lurker, but the last 3 weeks have actually been posting due to a post op. The place is bonkers, and I am going to miss it now I am on the mend.

Here are a few bonkers opinions.

  1. Men can become women

  2. If you have more than £3.46 left for the week, you have loads and shouldn't ask for budgeting advice.

  3. If you are uncomfortable with husband going to a strip club or a candlelit dinner with his ex, you are a controlling old witch who doesn't trust him.

  4. Something magical happens to your children the day they turn 18, and you should charge them market rent and not help them anymore.

  5. If you want to see a country that is a long haul flight away, you are environmentally worse than a Bond Villain.

  6. Dogs should always be on their leads, even in dog walking parks.

What else?

I think generally, especially on AIBU, Mnetters will argue the sky is green in any elaborate or ridiculous way they can in order to make OPs feel bad about themselves.

I think that's true, but it is also the place of extremes.

It's either £47.23 is loads to feed a family of 21 or how can I possibly do the food shop for 2 grand a month.

For no 4 if the magical thing that happens at 18 is they get a job, and you’re a single mum with an unsupportive father than damn right you start asking for a contribution to living costs.

You are way, way off on 1 and 3.

You think men can become women??

Holy moly!!

Exactly

Isn't this just life?

I agree with some of the opinions you've listed as 'bonkers'. No doubt you'd agree with some opinions I think are equally mad. You're never going to have everyone agree with everything.

I am sure that poster meant that it was wrong to say that “men can become women” was a minority opinion on mumsnet.

I agree with her / him. This is a rare forum where the gender critical view is expressed more often than the trans activist view.

coulditbeme2323 · 15/06/2026 12:16

Oh quite a few do!

It’s also possible to hold 2 views at once:

  1. men can’t become women
  2. the world is also not filled with men in dresses lurking round every corner wanting to go in ladies toilets and assault women / listen to them wee so maybe let’s keep our moral outrage on the subject in proportion to the actual scale of the threat
PurpleAxe · 15/06/2026 12:30

The place is full of complete nutbags.

I love it. 😁

Yes there is. Everyone here has exactly the same option

"Mumsnet says...."

Thus making the tapestry of life so rich, and psychiatrists even richer.

Out of interest which ones?

  1. You aren't aware of just how varied people's oppinions can be.
  2. The internet emboldens people to share oppinions they'd normally keep to themselves.
  3. Some people just love being contrary or devils advocate, they love a debate or even goading an arguement.
  4. Some people are trolls or just love creating negative attention for themselves.

Don't take any if it too seriously, especially not AIBU.

I think 2 is spot on, and I think we are all guilty of that. Including me.

The ones in my family 😉

That's probably true but I've also seen loads of trans activists on here, and LGBT activists.

Whenever there's a thread about a woman who suspects her husband might be sexually interested in men, her language will be policed and she will be accused of being a bigot by the cool women who definitely have bisexual husbands.

Viviennemary · 15/06/2026 12:48

I only agree with number six. Only dogs should be banned from all public places. They are a menace.

Bettycrocker7 · 15/06/2026 12:50

I was thoroughly told off for expecting my 15 year old to do chores. In another thread I was called a bad parent for not withdrawing privileges . I don't think you can win on here.

happygreenscissors · 15/06/2026 12:55

there's a completely disproportionate amount of posters who are terribly bitter and unhappy

hate fun, hate friends, hate parties, birthdays, weddings, hate men
hate absolutely everyone and everything

but that goes with an online forum. Go to a running club, people have problems too, but they are in their majority much less bitter about life.
I think that explains a lot of of the bonkers opinion on here.

Oh, absolutely. Also, when expressing an oppinion online, it's hard to convey nuance or explain yourself fully in a short written response. So people tend to offer fairly 'black and white' oppinions for ease that sound harsh or lacking thought and subtlety.

Then when challenged they either 'dig in' and defend a more strident position than they might actually hold, or they resort making stuff up to fit their narrative.

The problem is that an internet forum like this is shit for having a debate, or trying to work out what's going on in someone's relationship from a couple of sentances. So people over-simplify their responses, or read things into situations that aren't there to try to make sense of it.

And I suppose if everybody was as reasonable and polite as they were in real life, it would be dull wouldn't it!

Number 1) I haven’t seen this on here at all (not a bad thing) but Mumsnet is famously anti trans.
2) I don’t agree this is a common opinion, I get the impression that most of the posters on Mumsnet are very wealthy (or pretend to be)
3) Again the complete opposite, you’re more likely to get called a wet flannel for not caring about Strippers .
4) Again I’ve seen the reverse on here, lots of people who think you should pay for your 30 year olds meal out or holiday regardless of how much they earn.

BoredZelda · 15/06/2026 13:02

You will see what you want to see on any public forum. “Mumsnet” isn’t a singular entity, it is an amorphous collection of varied opinions. It’s ridiculous to suggest there is any one overriding opinion shared between the 26,000 daily posts. There are 8 million users registered, you really think they all share the same opinion?

can you link to the thread when someone has actually said that men can become women?

Nobody actually believes that a person can change their sex
