To think benefits need to be cut to fund increased spending on defence

This is absolutely necessary. Keir Starmer shouldnt have backed down the last time. But now with the current situation with Russia drastic steps need to be taken. We simply can't afford to sustain the current benefits bill with the armed forces so depleted. The money is needed to increase defence.

You haven’t read it properly.
it’s their kids. Teenagers.
They talk about home life.

Yes, because teens are trustworthy and know everything.
My teen brother told us his teacher tried to touch him. He was actually pissed he got a detention for being a twat in class.

Did you as a teenager know all the ins and outs of your parents finances. Do your kids?

I had no fucking clue about the finances of my parents when I was a teen.

Neither did I and my kids don't either.

A nasty fall, a stroke, Covid etc... you could be one of us at any time.

Yep. I had a stroke in the night. Life changed overnight.

Sorry to hear that.
Yet some people on here think they are immune.. will never be a benefit claimant. Being able bodied is temporary.

XenoBitch · Yesterday 23:11

menopausequeen · Yesterday 23:05

Absolutely. The welfare bill is out of control and working people can’t pay for the ever increasing pool of people on benefits.
welfare should be temporary and for people in genuine hardship, not a way of life.

it is a way of life if you are disabled.

will you take the effects of the stoke away at the same time? I'd sign up for that without blinking first.

I worked for over 40 years before I had the stroke.

Because teenagers tell school support staff everything., They are often angry and vent about home life. Adults don’t tend to do this because they know the consequences.

Yet on almost any benefit thread, several people claim to know sometimes multiple people who brag about it.

£300 billion a year on welfare and pensions and around £60 - 70 billion on defence.

Corporation tax cannot fund all of societies inequalities.

Tax should be collected properly, loopholes that avoid taxation should be removed and corporations should be made to abide by tax law.

There is a lot of fast money to be made by proper welfare reform. Come on, all public sector budgets should be tightened where there are inefficiencies. No budget should be untouchable.

I can not think of anything more boring to discuss with friends. Or in a pub/cafe/garden where people on here claim to know the exact amounts people get on UC
This past week, a friend said his PIP was stopped, and he was using a food bank. Someone got him cake and tea.. and we then talked about other stuff.
Where are these people who go into every tiny detail about what they claim? I have never seen this.

moonbugsnug · Yesterday 23:14

caringcarer · 14/06/2026 20:27

There was simply no need to give UC claimants an above inflation benefit increase. No need to remove 2 child cap. Pensions could drop down to double lock instead of triple lock and PIP should be tightened to only pay money to most disabled and those with ADHD should not get money and those with anxiety or mild depression should be given counselling not money. Bad backs should have scan evidence to claim money. They could up the number of points needed to get higher allowance from 12 to 18. Child benefit should be limited to family income of less than £60k to claim. It shouldn't all be taken from 1 benefit but spread across all benefits and if a person claims pip they shouldn't be given double credit by giving them disability credit on UC as they have PIP for their disability. Carers Allowance is already so low I don't think that can be reduced.

You’ve never had to work with a colleague with ADHD have you?

thank you 🌷

Yeah it can be 🙇🏻‍♀️

im just glad I was never a twat about people needing a bit of help in life & or bitching about paying for other people's rent & clothes.

Yep.

Most people I know rely on at least UC and it just isn't a discussion we have. I assume they know I get DLA for my son because the motability car makes it fairly obvious but it isn't something we've discussed.

Sorry i was born with a rare progressive congenital condition and that i could only work for 20 years full time before I had to drop to part time and claim benefits. How selfish of me. If you can fix organ failure and bipolar and bpd il up my hours. On the plus side il never claim a pension so the government will save there.

Same i haven't told anyone im on benefits apart from medical professionals to get help claiming pip. I assume friends and family know as I only work part time and im not living on the streets starving to death but its never been an actual discussion.

How much was it that Michelle Mone walked away with selling her dodgy PPE?

Same too. Most people I know are on benefits because they are people I met in hospital/therapy/groups etc.
Money is boring. We talk about what we have been up to, our little triumphs etc

Life changed overnight here too.

I had a healthy child and then I had a disabled one. Just like that.

Im
so sorry to hear that 💕

my godsons life changed suddenly one day too. Healthy happy 14 yo. Severe life threatening injuries in a car accident. Left with severe brain damage. His life, his parents lives. Unrecognisable. He's in his 30's now and cannot work or live independently,

all 3 of them are fucked financially.

i met a lot of children who had become disabled after an accident or illness.

People think their child is born 'healthy' they've escaped having a disabled child.... life can have other plans.

I'm sorry to hear about your godson too.

My son was 8 at the time and it was complications due to cancer. 17 minute cardiac arrest, multi organ failure, blood clots and then brutal cancer treatment on top of everything.

Financially fucked is accurate.

What would they buy with money that would help their condition?

That's why DLA/PIP is based on care needs, not diagnosis. Not everyone with ADHD or whatever would be eligible for it.

That is not even asked when anyone applies for DLA/PIP/ADP, so what makes you think you need to know?
