AIBU to dress up to match my son for his prom?

Hi there. My son has his high school prom coming up next month as he's 16 and doing his GCSEs at the moment. He's chosen his outfit choices and I've purchased both suits that he liked so he has a choice. He's gone for purple suits which are lovely. I've also purchased myself a lovely purple dress and some nice shoes so that he can have some lovely mum and son photos taken on his special night. I showed them to my partner and all he has said is that they're nice and will look great but why am I making such an effort when it's not even my night? He says it's silly and isn't necessary. He thinks I'm overdoing it on the effort for a night that isn't for me. Is it really unreasonable to want to make the effort or is he just being unnecessarily mean

It’s about him not you!!

OnlyHasEyesForLoki · 14/06/2026 17:43

OMG!! All he wants is to get dropped off, see his mates (& girlfriend/boyfriend if he has one) and for you to disappear as quickly as possible! Not for you to have bloody photos with him in a matching dress as if you’re his date!!!

I can imagine you wearing a wedding dress to his wedding in a few years! 🤣🤣🤣

OldScribbler · 14/06/2026 17:44

It’s thoughtful sweet of you but way over the top.

Soberinthecity · 14/06/2026 17:47

Um, no I wouldn’t. What does your son think?

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 14/06/2026 17:47

Who tf does that?

Twinmum0822 · 14/06/2026 17:48

I was in a T-shirt and leggings with a messy bun when I had a pic with my son going prom. Why on earth are you getting dressed up, it’s so weird. I really hope you are trolling

TheWisePanda · 14/06/2026 17:49

I’m afraid I’m with your partner on this one!

springtome · 14/06/2026 17:50

This is so weird. I drove both my kids to prom. Took photos of them dressed up and they sent me a photo or two of them at the party. I didn’t even think about what I was wearing that night. Both were a Monday so what I wore to work I think.

I love the sound of a purple suit! I’ve so far had 3 out of 4 of mine’s prom and I used to love to see a boy or girl in a more ‘out there’ outfit, I expect he will look fab!
Having read your posts and he’s just having some photos with you and you’re not hosting a ‘pres’ or going to the actual prom then it’s only going to be you and your family who sees you match anyway isn’t it? For our proms we’ve hosted ‘pres’ and most mums wore something sort of smart casual so they could have a nice photo with their kids too. I don’t think anyone wore a dress but if you aren’t with other parents then you can wear anything?
With all our proms the parents always go to look at them all arriving as they come in anything from a mini to a Porsche to a tank! Are you sure you aren’t going to watch them all arrive? If you are I’d quickly change again before then.

As I've said many times this is photos at home not outside his prom venue in front of his mates. It's a nice opportunity to get a photo of us together that looks nice, and my dress isn't even what you'd call prom worthy it's more something for a night out going for a few drinks with friends. There is no "pre prom party" or anything like that I'm not going there dressed to say hi to his friends he's already said he's most likely going with friends, if it comes to it that he wants me to see him into prom IF other parents are doing the same I'll go along with his siblings dressed in jeans and t-shirt or something.

I’m embarrassed for you.

NooNoo1979 · 14/06/2026 17:54

Why would you do that? Weird imo but each to their own 🤷🏼‍♀️

Jojobees · 14/06/2026 17:55

My son is the same age, his prom is in a few weeks. Whilst I haven’t bought anything to wear, I would like a family photo in the garden before he goes. So I don’t think you are unreasonable in wanting that. To buy a dress that “ matches “ is a bit but hey you do you. I hope he has a great night.

PonyPatter44 · 14/06/2026 17:56

Who is going to see the photos? If you're planning to plaster them all over your social media, tagging your lad, with a load of toe curling captions, then calm yourself down and stop being silly.

If the pictures are just for you, and just a bit of fun before he goes out, then go for it, and tell your partner he needs to take you out for dinner afterwards, because you're dressed up and looking lovely!

CRD67 · 14/06/2026 17:58

Cringe

inappropriateraspberry · 14/06/2026 18:00

It’s just weird. Are you his date? You can wear something nice for photos but why buy a special dress and why get something that matches? It screams ‘boy mum’ and inappropriate relationships.

Wooah! That is just plain weird.
Dont do it. Doing that would look needy and clingy if he was 10 years old. At 16 it is definitely off!

LarissatheDragon · 14/06/2026 18:02

If this whole thing is genuine then I say go for it, wear what you like. I love purple and don't actually give a fuck what anyone else thinks, I would definitely never post here for an opinion on that.

The jacket is very magician like, very flamboyant but having had kids graduate from US schools, I've seen worse.

Why are you not attending his graduation ceremony though? Regardless of your prom-photo-dress dilemma??

WhitePudding · 14/06/2026 18:02

In the kindest way it’s just not the done thing. You go along to the hotel or wherever it’s held and watch all the kids arrive in various modes of transport etc, take pics then when they go in for the meal you go home.

I see you have updated to say take pics at home, I personally thinks it’s OTT. My son wouldn’t want it, why does your son think?

Tuesdayschild50 · 14/06/2026 18:03

This is cringe.. don't do that its embarrassing its his prom and he is 16 not 6 .

Bumblebee0918 · 14/06/2026 18:04

I would say not! Ihave been through proms for 3 (end of yr 11 and yr 13) and would never have considered this - nor do I know anyone who has. By all means get a couple of nice photos before he goes but have you purchased matching outfits for the rest of the family too? If not it feels inappropriate and clingy. In my experience they either want their friends round or to go to their friends and focus on that - we also had friends that were slightly older and younger so in different year groups drop by for a drink. I out in something presentable but it is their night, for them. Let him focus on that.

notacooldad · 14/06/2026 18:05

He's not graduating. He is leaving secondary. The lad is just finishing his Gcse's and having his prom.

Stelladid · 14/06/2026 18:06

Sorry to tell you, but I think it’s weird. As a pp said, it smacks of being over-enmeshed and a bit creepy. His photos should be with his mates and/ordate.

I would like to understand how proms goes here.
Are the parents attending too, or is it just for children? Back home parents and siblings (or whoever you want to invite depends of numbers of available tickets) are absolutely invited and you take photos too. So would like to understand what is waiting for me in about 10 years time. I am a boy's mom too.
