To despair at this government??

This shambolic government - its utter chaos, the Tories were bad but Christ this lot are on another level.
Im really worried about where we’re heading, riots breaking out everywhere, the armed forces imploding, the police untrustworthy, we’re a laughing stock on the international stage.
Id say to call an early GE but I’m not a fan or reform either. At this point - I’d take the Tories back.
WTF is going on? I’m approaching 50 and I’ve never known the country in such a state.

AIBU to think we’re literally on the edge now? And what can actually be done to save it??

I am prone to anxiety so feel free to tell me on catastrophising

I don't understand what people were expecting.

Did you think Starmer would be able to wave his magic wand and undo all the damage the tories/brexit/Covid, etc., did in an instant?

Fixing the mess we are in is going to take decades, no matter who is in charge.

It’s all very well being statesmanlike on the way out. We could do with a bit more of it when in office. This government is bedevilled by its inability to accept difficult choices. The next one will have the same problems too.

I agree, I respect that Healy and Carns were so committed to reversing what they called "the hollowing out" of the Armed Forces by the Tories. It is like the Unison leader quoted above who is calling for a spending spree. Everyone has firm ideas of where money should be spent but when put to them by Starmer they can't commit to where it should be taken from.

This gov has been worse and more short sighted than I could ever imagine !
I can't believe the lies ,sleeze and sheer damage in such a short space of time

I’d like our politicians to be “I have done this” not “I have insight”. Literally who cares about insight if there is no action. This is why people get fed up. You want both, not head people with insight.

I am critical of Labour because look at their huge majority which they’ve wasted, they are unpopular for what? Not making difficult choices. That is not leadership.

All the more reason not to waste the next three years. I’m not going to knock people resigning out of principle because they can’t get the hard things done through no fault of their own.

You have to start somewhere though.
Close borders, proper plans for houses and energy, cost of living, high youth unemployment, benefits out of control and high government debt.
He literally has no plan. He and his government should be working together to takes steps to take control and make any immediate changes needed. We are getting nothing.
You can't fix everything overnight but you could show support especially towards workers who are living in poverty whilst immigrants and unemployed get absolutely everything at the click of a finger.
He will be the cause of any civil war

That would be Farage.

my mum is 87 and she doesn't remember it being this shit

I’m 72 and I remember it being far worse. The succession of governments we had throughout the 70s - the Tories and Labour took it in turns - were shockingly bad. The basic rate of tax was 33%, inflation was running in double digits - it hit 27% at one point. There were endless strikes, shortages, power cuts. This is a walk in the park in comparison.

I'm 70, and I think the late 70s and '80s were worse. Strikes, riots, high unemployment, high interest rates and loads of people having their homes repossessed because they couldn't pay their mortgages.

The power cuts weren't so bad. They were planned, area by area, so you could work around them. Where I lived, we were close to where 3 power cut areas met, so we could always find a pub to go to if we had no power at home. We'd get sent home from work early, or go in late, depending on when the power was going to be off. And our flat had gas for cooking and hot water, and gas fires, so we could always keep warm, eat and have a cuppa.

MulberryBrandy · 17/06/2026 22:57

I remember the boom and bust Thatcher years as being difficult. I knew people who had negative equity on their first two houses. There were then loads of houses for sale for ages.

“Close borders” - to everyone? No tourists? No holidays abroad? If you actually mean, tackle illegal immigration, it has been reducing substantially since Labour came to power. But that doesn’t fit the narrative does it? And as for being the cause of civil war, what nonsense. Farage is stoking the flames for sure, but sensible people see him and Restore for what they are.

Yellowshirt · 18/06/2026 12:58

It's not just illegal immigration. Your just following the media and believing small boats is the only issue .
Legal migration is also an issue. Why is the government not telling people why so many Indians are flooding the country and taking so many jobs. Someone said earlier on today they are getting reduced taxes for 3 years.
Labour is corrupt.

KateSixer · 18/06/2026 13:27

It could get worse. There is speculation that if Burnham gets elected and ousts Starmer that he might appoint Ed Miliband as Chancellor!

Seriously. I mean he's so unrealistic in his outlook. I am worried!

Well if he does that it's game over. I know Labour are the spend spend tax party, but Milliband has shown no room for negotiation, preferring other departments to slash their budgets. Tosser.

Is there a government link to evidence reduced taxes for three years or is it an X fact?

Chiwvun · 18/06/2026 13:40

I’m old enough to have voted many times for New Labour and they were excellent. Thry helped those struggling in poverty with sure start etc, helped people get to uni, people felt like they had a future and were optimistic. I felt that Blair wanted to run the country well. The Iraqi invasion was a mistake but you cannot just point to that and say everything he did was bad.

We are going to get a close succession of PMs because nobody is grown up enough to tell the public what they don’t want to hear. The country’s skint. PIP should only go to people with major illnesses like MND, had a bad stroke etc. the triple lock needs to go. 2p needs to go on every tax band, we need to get rid of the marginal rates by giving everyone a personal allowance / childcare hours / child benefit, we need to charge £10 for GP appointments, we need to add NICs into income tax, if you were born outwith the UK you should only get benefits if you’ve worked full time for 10 years, deport any person who’s asylum bid fails without appeals, make sure housing locals comes first and WASPI women can take a running jump.

The money we’re wasting on ‘be kind’ childish stupidity is costing us a fortune. The tax paying public are sick of it. We need to all be working or studying full time until retirement age.

Well since the same PP is insisting that all “boomers" were given a big discount on housing I’m inclined to assume this is the same category of “fact”.

The HMRC website (https://www.gov.uk/tax-come-to-uk) states the same tax rules for migrants as for residents.

The changes to migration are down to Brexit. You have just swapped one continent for another. Except probably the quality of life disparity is likely to encourage Indians to stay in the UK. Unless you are well off in India it is a hard place to live in.

Hope you weren’t one of the chumps who voted Conservative and thought migration would stop with Boris Johnson.

No I didn't vote Conservative.
I've always gone more towards Labour as I thought they would support workers. But I doubt I ever would again.
I'll be voting Reform as I don't have any other choice now.

I think Margaret Thatcher helping people onto the housing ladder was a fantastic idea.
It helped alot of people including my parents.
We just don't have anyone in government who is forward thinking and able to make tough decisions.

It was not like that for many other people, I'm afraid, quite the opposite. Here is my previous post:
