To not support England?!

Feetballislife · Today 10:12

Live and work in England. Not English. My team didn’t qualify for the World Cup so I’m supporting Scotland! Lobe a plucky underdog, have some Scots heritage ( and some English to be fair) plus I NEVER support English sports teams. EVER.
Football has inevitably come up in the office and several colleagues are generally pissed off that I’m not supporting England, insist I should be etc etc. Stupidly I mentioned that I never support England … did not gone down well.
If you live here then you should etc etc

YANBU - support who you like!
YABU - you ingrate, you live in the country you should support the national team.

The world cup to me means a load of slack-jawed morons chanting Eng-u-lund, Eng-a-lund while spending money they can't afford on overpriced merchandise and hero worshipping overpaid ninnies who in the main are not the best role models for young men

Where did the Op say they 'announced' it to be inflammatory. You're making assumptions.

Is this your first time on Mumsnet? 🤣🤣

The OP has got exactly what they wanted from this thread.

Just like the OP's of all the other threads that come round like clockwork for the World Cup and the Euros.

I couldn't care less about football but when I lived in South America, I chose to support the local team because why not enter into the spirit of it with the people around you? I was hardly going to be the only one sitting there celebrating because Colombia beat them. Obviously, they would have understood if it was England playing.

Edenmum2 · Today 12:41

Im English born & bred and I often go into it thinking I’d like them to do well but the behaviour of fans puts me off every time. I think this year will be especially unbearable.

Depends how long you've lived in England I suppose. Two years - it's normal that your outlook is still international. Twenty years - a bit unusual that you don't want to support the national team of the country you have made home (as well as your country of origin if applicable).

But 'unusual' is your choice, and shouldn't be viewed as some kind of personal or national insult by others.

Not really, my colleague has lived in Scotland for over 30 years but she supports England as she is English. Why can’t you support whatever team you like. If Scotland don’t qualify I support France or Spain.

You have to pity them really. Something is lacking if they need to gain attention in this way. 😞

What 'behaviour' specifically? Have England fans behaved particularly badly at recent World Cups?

She starts a lot of threads that are like this. They are usually to say how much she hates the English etc, etc.

The FA has done a lot to improve the behaviour of fans and it has improved a lot. It is a lot better than it was. Are you put off supporting a French team after PSG trashed Paris? And they won...

The whole thing. Supporting a neighbouring country to the one you have made home, then bringing it to mumsnet and enjoying the drama. And this person has form for it. It’s just screams of attention seeking and something being really quite wrong in their personal life. I think that is sad., yes.

To state something apt in this instance - why play the (wo)man rather than the ball?

LuckyHazelFox · Today 12:55

TheJuryIsOut · Today 10:19

I do think it's a bit odd that you would set up home and make a life in a country and then make a point of supporting someone else. I mean of course it's your choice but it does seem a bit strange to me.

It's more than that, it's bigotry, in the absence of why she won't ever support England. Hmmmm not goady at all 😴 🙄

Probably “being a bit common”. MN hanging offence.

Seriously?! 😂 if there was no rivalry it would be a much less interesting game

Nah.

It is the rabid hatred. You won't support England because you "hate" (your words iirc) the players who play for PL teams?

That is part of the problem.

I support Sheffield Wednesday - i don't hate United or their fans. I support my local team (not in UK) but i don't hate all the other kwague teams. That is why so many people really can't stand football.

Fair enough. I will probably get in trouble if I link the threads.

I suspect the main problem English fans have is the reputation going before them and then they get attacked by opposition fans.

I think that's the least of your worries. I have no idea why I am being personally attacked by you. I have no idea who you are.
