To not support England?!

Feetballislife · Today 10:12

Live and work in England. Not English. My team didn’t qualify for the World Cup so I’m supporting Scotland! Lobe a plucky underdog, have some Scots heritage ( and some English to be fair) plus I NEVER support English sports teams. EVER.
Football has inevitably come up in the office and several colleagues are generally pissed off that I’m not supporting England, insist I should be etc etc. Stupidly I mentioned that I never support England … did not gone down well.
If you live here then you should etc etc

YANBU - support who you like!
YABU - you ingrate, you live in the country you should support the national team.

Aye, it’s funny how the most passionate scotch so often choose not to live there.

Sean Connery, Alan Cummings, Nicola Sturgeon…

Scotch is a drink. But you know that, I reckon. Unless you are from the US?

Needmorelego · Today 10:41

@Feetballislife do you actively follow your home country team?
If you are clearly an active supporter then most football fans will respect that.
If it's just because that's where you are from but you can't actually name any of the players then it will seem a bit fake.

I'm fairly well travelled and have been to football matches in most European countries. The football culture is not the same in the majority of those countries.

One of the places I work frequently is in a country whose team are not in the world cup. Most of the people there seem to be supporting whoever they've drawn in the office sweep.

It's really fucking odd to think anyone has any right to dictate who other people should support in a football tournament. It's even odder to be offended by someone not supporting the same team as you. Actually it's pathetic.

I don't think anyone is offended, as I've said I just find it a bit odd and the "anyone but England" people who choose to live in England are usually just being purposely antagonistic.

30! But I’m not English so…

Is there any reason why you deliberately name changed to post your gripping revelation though?

Did you think football fans were going to type you to death or something? 🙄

‘Obviously if you are watching an England match in a public place you shouldn't be booing them or anything because that's rude.’

stupid and dangerous is what it would be. Also, no way am I going to watch anywhere with England fans.

Probably in response to the weird over-zealousness so many england fans adopt. Or actually, more likely those who are only fans every couple of years for the major tournaments but could tell you little to nothing about most of the players in the squad.

Of course! Always. Shame they’re a bit shite!

Oh don't be daft.
All the pubs round my South London area show football and people behave themselves.
The singing however can sometimes be annoying.....

Then true football fans won't care that you aren't supporting England.

This attitude here probably explains why your workmates have an issue with you.

Literally no-one, man, woman or dog will give a gnat's fart anyway 🤷‍♂️

How many of us walk around with a furrowed brow during the world cup, worrying about which stranger supports which team?

Oooohthatsfancy · Today 10:53

I’m English and will be supporting England but I hope Scotland do well too.

battairzeedurgzome · Today 10:57

I have never given a hoot about the outcome of any sporting event, anywhere, ever, and I'm not going to start now.

Over zealousness? Wanting your country to win the World Cup is over zealous now is it? 🙄 Deary me.

Ohpleeeease · Today 11:01

It was twatty to say you never support England, it sounds confrontational. Support who you like, it’s a free country (that you chose to live in).

DeftGoldHedgehog · Today 11:01

Of course YANBU. Support who you like, it's only a sport.

StrawberryFieldsForeverWhatever · Today 11:04

"I NEVER support English sports teams. EVER."

Okay I'll bite. Why?

BillieWiper · Today 11:06

Just say you've Scots background so that's your team. Surely there's plenty of people supporting Scotland?

I kind of want them to do really well as they rarely seem to get through. I'll watch the England games and wish them well too. But I'm not exactly a hardcore England fan. I think a lot of people know that the best footballers in the UK leagues are often not British.

Also funny how so many dumplings refer to Scots as "scotch" 🙄

As a Scot exiled in France I will be supporting both Scotland and France.

nam3c4ang3 · Today 11:07

I support my own country first - then England as my husband and kids are english. England wont win anyway 😂

WillieBanjo · Today 11:08

I am English. I would be pleased if they won and would watch them with friends, but I have not supported the football team in a tournament since Andy Cole was left out of the squad in 1998 and have instead supported the Netherlands.

Okay I'll bite. Why?

I’ll answer.

Because:
Racism
Colonialism
Superiority complex
Empire
The King
Tommy Robinson
The Tories, Reform and Restore
We’re Better People Than You Even Though We Choose To Live In England

Is my Bingo card complete? Grin

Littlebitpsycho · Today 11:09

Lol I'm English and openly tell people I hope they get knocked out in the first round.

Hate football, England are shite at it (well the men's team are), and the constant 'footballs coming home'...no. No it isn't
