To not support England?!

Feetballislife · Today 10:12

Live and work in England. Not English. My team didn’t qualify for the World Cup so I’m supporting Scotland! Lobe a plucky underdog, have some Scots heritage ( and some English to be fair) plus I NEVER support English sports teams. EVER.
Football has inevitably come up in the office and several colleagues are generally pissed off that I’m not supporting England, insist I should be etc etc. Stupidly I mentioned that I never support England … did not gone down well.
If you live here then you should etc etc

YANBU - support who you like!
YABU - you ingrate, you live in the country you should support the national team.

I usually support Italy and I was born and raised in England. I hate enforced patriotism. They didn't qualify, so I'll be supporting Scotland instead. (I have Italian and Scottish blood in me, as well as Welsh.)

You're one lucky person with that heritage!

Slowdownyouredoingfine · Today 13:41

There’s a difference between supporting another country because it’s your home nation and making a point of saying you’ll never support England under any circumstances. The first is understandable, the second can come across as hostile or disrespectful. I think the way you expressed it was unnecessarily provocative, and I think you knew that.

Can you be specific about recent poor behaviour involving travelling England fans?

You've changed the parameters of the question you originally asked, which was:

What 'behaviour' specifically? Have England fans behaved particularly badly at recent World Cups

I gave you an example of behaviour (domestic violence) by England fans that is worse during major tournaments. They might not have been rioting in the streets in recent times (excepting some notable disorder in Germany in 2024 of course...), granted. Yet, I should add.

My original question was about 'travelling England fans'.

So no, I didn't change the 'parameters' of my question.

It's weird that you're making such a point of not supporting England.

That is the odd bit

Dappy777 · Today 14:18

I'm English, and can trace my family back to the 14th-century, but I won't be supporting England either – mainly because I don't feel English anymore. Why would I support a country in which it is controversial even to fly your national flag?! Any sense of living in a nation, with a shared history and a shared culture, is long dead.

The left got what they wanted. In 1997, a speechwriter for Blair said the plan was "to rub the right's nose in diversity and render their arguments out of date." That has been achieved. They have demonized our national heroes and taught us to feel ashamed of our history. God, Radio 4 can't even mention Jane Austen without linking her to slavery or colonialism. I'll watch the World Cup, but I couldn't care less about England.

I’m Irish and I live in England. I cheer for both teams, also cheered for France when I lived there. I don’t like the “never support England in anything” crowd

…. Because your obviously not insecure

LizardyGuts · Today 14:46

BashfulClam · Today 12:42

Not really, my colleague has lived in Scotland for over 30 years but she supports England as she is English. Why can’t you support whatever team you like. If Scotland don’t qualify I support France or Spain.

Yes, that's why I said "and your country of origin". Of course your colleague wants England to win, but if they weren't in it at all would she not support Scotland more than another random team, since she lives in Scotland? It's fine if she wouldn't, but I think most people would, that's all.

Goditsmemargaret · Today 14:48

Hahahaha hahahaha OP, you're obviously Irish and therefore ywbvvvu to support England. 800 years and all that!

And to the sensitive English, you really should take all that energy you waste on being offended and use some of it reading a history book or two.

All this about 22 grown men kicking a ball about a field.

She shouldn't support Scotland either then. What a load of shit they did to Ireland too.

Nah she doesn’t bother if England aren’t in it. We gave her a slight ribbing as her husband and son are Scotland supporters.

The played a part in the colonisation yes but an equal part? Oh no, no, no, no.

Anyway we feel more of an affinity with the Scots for many reasons.

'Anyone but England' is real. I don't know why the English get so outraged by it and I really don't know why they are so surprised. It's only about sports, you'd all wanna calm down (and just accept you're not the popular kids)

This is totally different to the OP though. Your colleague is only interested in her country of origin and doesn't feel attracted to support any other country at all. OP is interested in supporting another country, but it isn't her country of origin OR the country she lives in! She has scorned them both and just chosen a random neighbouring country. That's like your colleague saying, "what a shame England didn't qualify. Everyone I know is supporting Scotland, where I've also lived most of my life, but I think I'll just support Wales instead."

The Scots were involved in the British empire in numbers way out of proportion to their population.

Who do you think the likes of Ian Paisley are descended from? The clue is kind of in the name.

So modern Scotland are now getting the blame for Ian Paisley? I've heard it all now.

Yeah you've 'heard it all' because you basically made it up.

That isn't what I said at all.

Support who you want. But you’ve clearly gone out of your way to piss them off. Made your bed now lie in it.

Whosthetabbynow · Today 15:26

Support who you want but seems deliberately inflammatory to announce you never support England to a group of England fans.

If I wasn’t cheering England on I’d rather support a team from some far-flung country than Scotland.
