To think it is posh and or pretentious to say you are "drawing" a bath?

What do you think. My DP always says this but I think it is very strange and old fashioned to say this instead of just saying you are running a bath?

We actually do say draw the curtains - I thought everyone did!

Yes, the previous poster is saying that "draw the curtains" is a normal expression.

BIWI · Yesterday 22:58

We draw the curtains as well!

I say draw the curtains too! And I’m northern and definitely not posh!

DH likes to say elevenses (although he is posher than me, and from the south). I find it rather quaint and endearing.

Totally normal, along with drawing the curtains.

EVERYONE DRAWS THE CURTAINS!! THAT WAS THE POINT!

ReignOfError · Yesterday 23:00

My grandparents - who were anything but posh or pretentious - used say draw(ing) a bath. I’d not thought of that in decades and now I’m feeling all nicely nostalgic.

Myoldbear · Yesterday 23:01

My mother in law used to say,
'I'm just waiting for the tea to draw.'

I don’t. I pull them.

My husband opens and closes the drapes.

I still don’t get that after re-reading. Perhaps it was the comment about pencils, which has nothing to do with drawing curtains or baths. Or the pull the curtains? 🤷‍♀️

My husband refers to a walk as stretching his legs ! Find it strange vocabulary and he washes his teeth! Surely cleaning or brushing teeth is the usual terminology

I certainly grew up ‘washing my teeth’.

labamba007 · Yesterday 23:05

I think it’s charming

Clarinet1 · Yesterday 23:06

I tend to think of “drawing” a bath as a more American expression whereas “running” a bath would be more UK.

No, it’s not pretentious neccesarily, it’s just that different people use different terms for things. Language shaming is toxic.

Cool your jets 😆

LettuceAndCarrots · Yesterday 23:09

I'm mid 40s and say draw a bath sometimes. Other times I say run. Depends on my mood.

I still spell jail as gaol too, which flummoxes a surprising number of people.

The poster was saying that "drawing a bath" has the same derivation as "drawing the curtains", and just because they have a different meaning to "drawing a picture with a pencil" doesn't make them weird or pretentious.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · Yesterday 23:12

How is it pretentious? How else would you say it???

LettuceAndCarrots · Yesterday 23:12

Pistachiocake · Yesterday 22:51

What about draw the curtains? It's the same thing-you aren't actually getting out pencils and paper to draw them. Is that pretentious too?
Most of us might now say pull the curtains and run a bath, but others might criticise those terms too.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone say pull the curtains! Everyone I know says either draw or close the curtains!

KimberleyMilkado · Yesterday 23:14

Washing your teeth?! I draw the line/curtains/bath at that.

Viviennemary · Yesterday 23:14

It does sound a bit daft

WilfredsPies · Yesterday 23:17

If he says it because he’s always said it, then that’s his vocabulary and you can’t criticise someone for being more eloquent than you.

If he’s saying it because he heard it somewhere and thinks it makes him sound like landed gentry then yes, he’s probably a bit of a pillock.

Where and when were you brought up?

Morepositivemum · Yesterday 23:20

Sometimes you just use a phrase you’ve heard in a book or on a film, not a fan of that but would rather hear someone say something like that than use the curse words so many people use now

InterestedDad37 · Yesterday 23:21

Someone recently asked me how I 'take' my porridge 😀

That’s normal where we live, some people take it with salt and some with sugar.
