AIBU Digital ID ?

ThatFairy · Today 20:36

It's difficult to source information on this but I've gathered we have three months before we will be given a digital ID in order to use social media. We will also not be able to work without it and so it will be compulsory (please check that information tis is just what I've gathered and it's hard to find all the information)

Will all the data from everything I typed on eg Mumsnet be collected and tied to the digital ID ? Every Google search or chat with ChatGPT in the past 5 years ?

Do we need to buy new devices and change our broadband provider before we are given this to protect our privacy ? Or is that just not enough as it is too late and they have our data already if we didn't use VPNs and use separate devices for social media and personal and civil accounts...

Maybe it's for a greater good that our privacy and free speech will be compromised but people are already in fear of getting arrested for saying the wrong thing online and for speaking against the government.

This will completely change how we communicate online. Some social media sites will still be accessible via Tor. I would appreciate input from anyone with knowledge and shared views on protecting our privacy and free speech

What they said ^

If it is difficult to source information on it, how do you think people will be able to give you answers? Everything public at the moment says the digital id will be voluntary.

WilfredsPies · Today 20:42

Do you not think that if we had 3 months to obtain a digital ID, or be unable to use social media, then some reputable media outlet might have reported on it? Mumsnet may have pinned an announcement asking users to make sure they got their number so they could continue using it?

Where have you found this nonsense?

ThatFairy · Today 20:44

@ThaneOfGlamis maybe voluntary for the moment, but we will not be able to use social media without it
The reason I'm asking people for information is because mainstream media block the flow of information and it's other people that are the correct source of information

@WilfredsPies so you're not even aware of this ? It's being reported on X

How did it just know you were going to use the phrase "mainstream media".

You just need to throw in a "sheeple" and I can call bingo.

We have similar in Denmark. Its wonderful. I don't need to remember hundreds of usernames and passwords and I can access my digital mail, tax return, all public services, online banking. Nowt to do with your browser history or social media.

ExtraOnions · Today 20:47

Are you talking about this?

”The UK government issued a three-month deadline to tech companies like Apple and Google, requiring them to activate built-in, device-level safeguards by default. This software aims to prevent children under 18 from taking, sending, or viewing explicit/nude images. If the companies fail to comply, the government is expected to introduce legislation involving fines or criminal sanctions”

Are you the owne of Google or Apple ? Or maybe you are under 18?

You seem to have invented a government policy that doesn’t exist solely for the purposes of getting worked up about it.

ThatFairy · Today 20:52

@ExtraOnions No. That under 16s will not be able to access social media and consequently ID will be required to use it

Oh why didn't you say it's been reported on X.

Must be true then?

Was it also reported in the Daily Star?

ThatFairy · Today 20:54

@Crunchymum at least look at it before you dismiss it.

Horlicks? Is that a typo or euphemism for pigs ear? Genuinely confused.

Shabana Mahmood MP is saying on Twitter there will be age verification to basically use the internet

Gladystheimpaler · Today 21:00

OP, I can totally understand seeing this on X might make you panic. But if this was a real thing that was going to happen, the big social media companies would be taking the UK government to court for putting their business at risk. The government also relies on social media to get messages out, they would be telling people to get their codes ready. Can you link any of the sourced that are being shared on X? Perhaps we can point out why they might be incorrect and help put your mind at rest.

Quite right that this should be in place. What is the problem?

Renamedefault · Today 21:01

Good.

The internet is toxic, and the negative impacts on society now outweigh the positives. It’s time someone brought some regulation to the Wild West.

This is a reason why the government is demanding social media companies tighten up. They have been systematically and deliberately designing addictive platforms. These are harming kids.

DigiD in the Netherlands is a secure way of accessing and protecting important information - pensions, tax etc and for verifying your identity to use certain websites (often government related). It does not access or monitor pretty much everything you included in your post
