AIBU Digital ID ?

ThatFairy · 08/06/2026 20:36

It's difficult to source information on this but I've gathered we have three months before we will be given a digital ID in order to use social media. We will also not be able to work without it and so it will be compulsory (please check that information tis is just what I've gathered and it's hard to find all the information)

Will all the data from everything I typed on eg Mumsnet be collected and tied to the digital ID ? Every Google search or chat with ChatGPT in the past 5 years ?

Do we need to buy new devices and change our broadband provider before we are given this to protect our privacy ? Or is that just not enough as it is too late and they have our data already if we didn't use VPNs and use separate devices for social media and personal and civil accounts...

Maybe it's for a greater good that our privacy and free speech will be compromised but people are already in fear of getting arrested for saying the wrong thing online and for speaking against the government.

This will completely change how we communicate online. Some social media sites will still be accessible via Tor. I would appreciate input from anyone with knowledge and shared views on protecting our privacy and free speech

Yes, they do. Specifically for speaking against how the government handles racial tension and crime, and immigration policies. There was a woman in court for saying, that immigrants come here and get welfare and have a good life living off the state. That is all she said. I watched the video. Some people are not charged but are visited by anti- terrorism police for online Speech and political views

I posted upthread info on the identity verification policy for social media stated on GOVUK website make of it what you will.

And now you are just straight up spreading misinformation.

These things always amount to 'I don't feel able to be openly racist any more'

PancakeCloud · 09/06/2026 12:24

This absolutely nuts take from the OP is a clear example of why the internet is dangerous. Utter nonsense. Sad that people believe this as it ruptures society.

The secret is to frame your racism as "concern" for vulnerable groups (none of whom have asked for or want your "concern").

SerendipityJane · 09/06/2026 15:51

I realise experts aren't really any use in this debate - I mean we've all had en
enough of them. However here is an industry adjacent discussion emerging.

E2A: Incidentally, in all "testing" of these ideas thus far, the nudes that are blocked are generally Caucasian - obviously the entrenched racism in tech continues unabated.

I buy vape liquid online and it requires an age verification. The system them use is to verify my bank account. I haven't had to show any ID at all.

People worries about online anonymity are shutting thw barn doors after the horse has bolted. You use an IP address to go online - that creates a link to you. If you use a VPN it can generate new ones, but having a paid for VPN is itself a record of you engaging with a VPN company. All your online accounts, Google log in, Microsoft, browsers, app store history, they all record a digital profile of you. There is no such thing as online anonymity unless you only use the dark web!

The best idea when online is to behave as if you are not anonymous, because you aren't.

Ok but only your ISP knows who you are unless the government uses a warrant to trace you

I don't have any ID, and if this change is device level, then I am not sure how that will work with my old phone that has been too old to update for several years now.

Source?

I didn't keep it but here's one from just now. It happens pretty frequently, but the only place you'll see this information is on X. I don't believe most of these people are racist some of them are experiencing anti- social behaviour and some of them simply want to have a national discussion about border control.

Why is there no footage of his behaviour BEFORE the arrest? It's very easy to show someone being arrested with absolutely no context or any information about what he did.

Two posts below there's a video from the same poster with the headline "This Christian British man was arrested for quietly praying in the street" . The video does not show him being arrested, and he's using a microphone and amplifier! As someone said above, this is not a reliable source. It's very clearly a user with an agenda.

Theworldsgonemadagain · 09/06/2026 20:52

Op it's not digital ID as I'm opposed to that and signed the petition for it to be scrapped. I believe the lovely Kier U turned (for the 50th time) and said you won't need it for applying for new jobs and people don't have to have it. Probably a lie but time will tell. I think this is in regards to children having social media under 16 and having to verify their ages. Many platforms are already using this, there are ways round it and a lot of kids will carry on. I'm on the fence really, in my opinion it's government over reach but I also think social media is a cess pitt of shite.

What ? He clearly is being arrested in the video, and he is also saying exactly why he is being arrested as it is happening

It always amazes me how some people think they’re so important that the government would want to know more about them, especially read all their Mumsnet posts.

ThatFairy · 09/06/2026 21:17

It's the principle. We have a right to privacy. And even if you're a good little citizen and don't say things you're not allowed to you might end up with a detailed public file on yourself published after your death.

That’s not how digital IDs will be used. I invite you to read the countless threads on this already where people have explained the technology behind them.

I don't think it will be monitoring us to the extent you suggest OP but you are absolutely correct to be questioning it.

It wasn't that long ago that they implemented the online safety act and this just sounds like a progression of it, thats the way they put these initiatives in place...with small incremental changes so you think "Oh is that all? That doesn't sound so bad," and then boom! Several years later after lots of little changes, what you would have considered completely outrageous limitations and monitoring at the start has actually been normalised with very little questioning.

I don't disagree op but none of our data is safe. Encryption is not safe either. I use VPNs but realistically our data is all out there and there's not much we can do about it.. Regarding social media posts there have even been main stream news alluding to 30 people being arrested a day for social media posts. It's not made up as pp have said. I understand the law has been amended to stop ' non hate crime offences' as its been recognised as bloody ridiculous and a waste of police time. Hopefully the tide is starting to turn. It's not really a case of if your not doing anything wrong why worry, that is very , very naive. People having opinions on trans people and women's spaces and being arrested when leaving a plane is ridiculous in the extreme. You wouldn't get a police officer out if your house was burgled! I think we've all had a gutload of this shit and the tide is starting to turn op.

What is sinister about government advisers garnering opinion online? Most political threads are obviously this. Government workers are normal people, going about their normal lives. I am a government worker, probably lots of people on this thread work in the sector. MI5 isn't sinister!

Did you post on another thread that you think people can piggyback your wifi?
