AIBU Digital ID ?

ThatFairy · 08/06/2026 20:36

It's difficult to source information on this but I've gathered we have three months before we will be given a digital ID in order to use social media. We will also not be able to work without it and so it will be compulsory (please check that information tis is just what I've gathered and it's hard to find all the information)

Will all the data from everything I typed on eg Mumsnet be collected and tied to the digital ID ? Every Google search or chat with ChatGPT in the past 5 years ?

Do we need to buy new devices and change our broadband provider before we are given this to protect our privacy ? Or is that just not enough as it is too late and they have our data already if we didn't use VPNs and use separate devices for social media and personal and civil accounts...

Maybe it's for a greater good that our privacy and free speech will be compromised but people are already in fear of getting arrested for saying the wrong thing online and for speaking against the government.

This will completely change how we communicate online. Some social media sites will still be accessible via Tor. I would appreciate input from anyone with knowledge and shared views on protecting our privacy and free speech

Our data's everywhere but it's not extensively connected up and tied to our identity if you use steps like separate email addresses for use your identity is known to your ISP and to accounts like Amazon who don't share your name with third parties. I believe that data will be centralized tied to the digital ID.

I've not been using VPN the last few months just because my current phone doesn't support it properly but the solution to fingerprints is to use separate devices for social media with VPN or payg plus a device for your government, shopping accounts etc

What a load of ridiculous effort for someone who has nothing to hide 👀

You just told me the government talks to us online and you work for them and now you're saying this to me and I'm the one that's acting weird because I don't like this ?

I didn't keep it but here's one from just now. It happens pretty frequently, but the only place you'll see this information is on X. I don't believe most of these people are racist some of them are experiencing anti- social behaviour and some of them simply want to have a national discussion about border control.

This is a video of Alan Leggett, and I've seen it before (at least months ago).

He was posting names and addresses of migrants on social media IIRC.

ThatFairy · 09/06/2026 22:53

I was going to comment on social media, "xxxxx" but I didn't, just because it might cause the police to come to my door. It's ridiculous, we can't talk normally, we cant joke, as it is.

Just because you've imagined a scenario doesn't mean its true.

It'd almost certainly violate the ECHR as well (although obviously, Reform and the Tories want to scrap our human rights protections, so it would be a more plausible concern if they got in).

If you aren’t posting anything wrong then why would the police come?

The police will come to your door if you’re offensive and someone reports you for hate speech. You’re very paranoid, I say this with the utmost respect - you need some help. There was a thread not so long ago about someone’s DH who went down a similar rabbit hole and he was sectioned.

I thought it was being done at phone level like Apple has already started doing, or else people are going to have to verify their age at loads of different websites and then probably wouldn't bother using them, like I wouldn't bother using MN if I had to verify my age.

KenAdams · 10/06/2026 08:30

Oh OP they've really got to you haven't they? You've taken 3 different topics and come up with something completely different. Of course the people that pedal a certain narrative are going to tell you that their main source of misinformation spreading is the only reliable source.

Just to point out, this OP has not provided any sources to substantiate what she's saying.

DidntHaveTheLatin · 10/06/2026 08:31

Shall we leave it there, maybe?

The difference between "illegal speech", observation and joking is blurred now

Edited

I sat watching cases in a magistrates court, and there was a man there who posted something pretty minor on his FB. Someone took offence and it went to court, and he got a fine and a criminal record.

They have sold it wrong, but it will enable a lot of advances in government service delivery, look at countries that have done it well. Instead we have a lot of databases that don't talk to each other. It's a really good thing, to me all I didn't like about it previously was carrying the card, but actually helping the systems speak to each other was far more important.

The OP isn't talking about the BritCard thing (to be used for public services), exactly. She's meshing it together with other topics (age restrictions on social media) and her own imagination.

See I don't like the idea of my personal medical information being viewable in non- medical situations. It could start anywhere from law enforcement to work and develop from there.

It doesn't work like that, all the different data sets will have different restrictions on access based in who is looking. So it's not like a call centre worker in one department will be able to see what you last spoke to your Dr about.

ThatFairy · 12/06/2026 23:02

Even if appropriate safeguards are put in place our data is leaked in massive quantities all the time. And this attitude of, well if you've nothing to hide just tolerate the privacy intrusion... how would you feel if a loved one was accused falsely of a crime like rape say in a private messenger conversation- which by the way such data already is not guaranteed to EVER be deleted or anonymized even at the request of sender and recipient or account deletions- and that information was either leaked or simply allowed to be easily tied to the rest of an individual's information in the age of the digital ID and Online Safety Act. ?

OP posts:
ThatFairy · 12/06/2026 23:10

Regardless. If we're going to allow this there needs to be absolute transparency on it's implications. Which is not going to happen, because the government do not believe they owe us that.
