AIBU Digital ID ?

It's difficult to source information on this but I've gathered we have three months before we will be given a digital ID in order to use social media. We will also not be able to work without it and so it will be compulsory (please check that information tis is just what I've gathered and it's hard to find all the information)

Will all the data from everything I typed on eg Mumsnet be collected and tied to the digital ID ? Every Google search or chat with ChatGPT in the past 5 years ?

Do we need to buy new devices and change our broadband provider before we are given this to protect our privacy ? Or is that just not enough as it is too late and they have our data already if we didn't use VPNs and use separate devices for social media and personal and civil accounts...

Maybe it's for a greater good that our privacy and free speech will be compromised but people are already in fear of getting arrested for saying the wrong thing online and for speaking against the government.

This will completely change how we communicate online. Some social media sites will still be accessible via Tor. I would appreciate input from anyone with knowledge and shared views on protecting our privacy and free speech

How have you got through life up until now without being able to prove your identity - don’t you need it for bank accounts/ registering at a doctors etc?

They would require someone to sign that the photo is of you (like for new passport and children’s passports) and probably some non-photographic id such as a birth certificate, council tax or utility bill.

I’ve had my bank account since I was 18, about 45 years ago and been at my doctor for almost as long. It’s never been an issue until recently.

What is it going to stop you doing that you want to do?

It will stop me doing this. Talking to people online anonymously. There will be a data file of everything I say search or interact with- it's highly intrusive, it makes me feel uncomfortable and communication online will change for Brits so much as so that social media will be like a real public place where everyone is identified and monitored by the government private companies or third parties.

Our data is frequently leaked. Imagine having a scary encounter with a stranger online and fearing they could trace your identity.

People are already scared to speak against the government. They get prosecuted for it.

I won’t be loading up ID to this website if we have to. I just won’t use it.

But how would I get one? I can’t prove who I am?

I've used my photo bus pass as id.
And my Costco card.

People don't get prosecuted for criticizing the government.

There is no good reason to think a digital ID will be required in order to access social media.

You'd probably benefit from stepping away from it, though.

Yes, they do. Specifically for speaking against how the government handles racial tension and crime, and immigration policies. There was a woman in court for saying, that immigrants come here and get welfare and have a good life living off the state. That is all she said. I watched the video. Some people are not charged but are visited by anti- terrorism police for online Speech and political views

I posted upthread info on the identity verification policy for social media stated on GOVUK website make of it what you will.

Bullshit.

You posted information about the Online Safety Act, which has been in force for some time now, and does not require a digital ID (or photo ID) to access mainstream social media platforms.

You have to think of how it will be possible to stop children accessing social media by age verification without everyone having to provide age ie identity verification to also use it

Under 16s are banned from social media in Australia without any form of digital ID being imposed on anyone.
