AIBU to think schools should not allow students to wear black trainers all day, every day?

My child's high school is allowing students to wear black trainers all day. I think this is bad for their feet, more expensive for parents, and a drop in standards.

Have a day off! What does it matter in the grand scheme of things!

Why would they be bad for the feet? They are made for running, walking, sport. Probably better than rigid shoes.

Ha ha! I am an older parent so I remember this being a common belief in the 70s and early 80s when trainers really
gained in popularity. Never made sense and I remember when my 80 year old
granddad had to go to a sports store with a bit of paper the occupational therapist had jotted down a couple of recommended brands of trainers on! He wore a three piece suit, shirt, tie and flashy trainers!

My dd has just been told by orthotics at our hospital she needs to wear trainers to school so they can't be that bad for her feet!

Are you OK...?

How bloody rude and patronising with that gif 🙄

You can disagree, but no need to be so belittling of the OP.

Dress standards have gone downhill from when I was at school. I'm 60 now. We all had time dress smartly in skirts, blouses G/shirts B with ties. And blazers and/or jumpers. Plus black 'shoes'. Trainers or Plimsols were not allowed to be worn with school uniforms..

Todday's kids don't evrn do their ties up like in my day, where they had to be done up to the neck. Half of today's children, more so secondary school go around with the ties drooping down halfway down their chest looking totally scruffy!

Pupils should have to wear proper school shoes. And children who attend school are "pupils", not "students".

You will be really cross at the description my child’s school uses of ‘young adults’ from year 7 up! I do raise an eyebrow but there are bigger fish to fry…

My kids high school bans trainers. They have to be proper shoes with no embellishments. I have been known to use black nail varnish on very thin gold band on shoes. Even a limit on heels to certain heights. One of my kids was told by a podiatrist to wear trainers while she was recovering from an injury and she had to repeatedly show his letter as she was asked multiple times why she was wearing trainers. Offenders got sent to the library or given a different pair to wear until the end of the day.

It is a drop in standards and speaks to low aspirations. What's the rest of the uniform like? Polo's?

The real drop in standards is putting an apostrophe in a plural

glaciercherry · Today 08:40

What? It’s much better for their feet than smart shoes.

Yep, they are bad for not just your feet but posture, knees and back if worn long term, which they weren't intended to be for. trainers are for sports wear and running not for walking and everyday use

No, sprinting trainers designed for sprinting may not be great for all day - they may tip you forward a bit and be not great for posture. But you can also buy trainers for cross country that are far more comfortable to wear for a day than school shoes.

I remember having to break shoes in and all the blood on my socks as plasters over the heels came off during the day. I wasn't the only one.

I have never had blood on my feet and socks from wearing trainers. We shouldn’t be doing this to kids, trainers is a great idea.

I am 58 and from a country without a uniform fetish. I went to school in a rah rah skirt in 1984... And we all turned out fine.

Why are children being required to wear ties to school in the first place? Hardly anyone I know wears a tie to work these days. Why are we holding children to these silly standards?

measuretwicecutonce · Today 09:37

Another thread blaming schools. When are people going to take responsibility for themselves?

I wasn’t aware that schools purchased and handed out black trainers? So parents are buying them aren’t they so parents are letting their children wear them all day. I assume I’ll be told that it’s sooooo difficult for parents as everyone is wearing them and your children will be somehow made fun of or something. Basically just parent up and send your child in what you deem acceptable.

Yes standards have dropped, it doesn’t mean you have to drop yours. Stop being a sheep, think for yourself.

NamelessNancy · Today 11:00

Dropping standards - what absolute nonsense! Children are just as capable of learning and behaving well in trainers and joggers as they are in ties and leather shoes. I would argue moreso if they are more comfortable. It is also easier to see the importance of following rules which make sense if not subjected to idiotic ones which absolutely do not.
