AIBU to think schools should not allow students to wear black trainers all day, every day?

My child's high school is allowing students to wear black trainers all day. I think this is bad for their feet, more expensive for parents, and a drop in standards.

AIBU?

I wear trainers to work most days. I don’t see the problem

NamelessNancy · 08/06/2026 16:10

Do you think generations of kids in other countries have ended their school years with damaged feet due to wearing trainers?

EmeraldShamrock000 · 08/06/2026 16:12

They’re more comfortable than a leather or fake leather shoe. They can be worn after school so you only need to buy one pair. Kids feet grow out often so buying two pairs is wasteful.

WhereIsMyLight · 08/06/2026 16:13

You’re not actually concerned about the bad for feet or more expensive for parents. It’s just the perceived lack of standards. If you kid is requesting designer shoes, then that’s a conversation for you to have with them about whether they save up for it, it is part of their birthday/Christmas present or they have cheaper shoes because you can’t afford them but this would also happen with shoes and PE shoes.

I think it’s absolutely insane we expect children to look like tiny business men for most of the year. Even more insane when you consider that most workplaces are more relaxed about clothing now and there are very few industries requiring smart shoes, suits and ties. A lot of workplaces allow smart looking trainers as part of smart casual for office wear, particularly those commuting through cities.

I think you’re just really out of touch.

name kids in other countries don't learn anything or pass any exams. The lack of blazers, ties and office shoes stops them succeeding in life. It's really sad 😢.

Yetanotherone12 · 08/06/2026 16:16

Are you my mother who thinks wearing trainers makes your feet “soft”, and you need to suffer for fashion?

Sirzy · 08/06/2026 16:17

I work in a primary school and wear Skechers trainers every day. They are practical and comfy.

I think from a secondary school POV there should be guidance on logos etc but trainers makes a lot of sense.

That certainly is sad. Maybe a charity could be set up to send ties and blazers to help the children of France, Germany, Spain etc get an education.

Imaginingdragonsagain · 08/06/2026 16:18

Surely trainers are fine for their feet?

WorkCleanRepeat · 08/06/2026 16:18

I wish our local secondary school would do this. Much better for their feet than walking to and from school in "Proper" shoes.

yesitstoohectic · 08/06/2026 16:19

My ds wears trainers we had to write to the head explaining why as he has sensory issues . They weren’t happy but really it makes no difference.

coulditbeme2323 · 08/06/2026 16:19

Agree with you, drop in standards.

FrostyPalms · 08/06/2026 16:20

What are you talking about? What shoes are better for your feet than trainers?

BrokenWing · 08/06/2026 16:21

The school has a uniform code. Whether it is shoes or trainers allowed it doesn’t matter, everyone should follow it, it really isn’t difficult.

Morepositivemum · 08/06/2026 16:21

Most kids will not have the option of eg Clark’s shoes so the alternative will be them wearing supermarket shoes. Runners are much better

This reminds me of the SNL Trump sneakers sketch.

maybe we all just need the right shoes to succeed!

FeelingALittleWoozyHere · 08/06/2026 16:22

What? How are they bad for feet? I live in trainers and walk miles every day. I wear black trainers to work with wide leg trousers, no issues with standards here. I am comfortable and my brain works just the same

Comefromaway · 08/06/2026 16:22

I think it's a brilliant idea. Trainers are on the whole much better and more supportive for your feet than the majority of school shoes.

KrazyKatty · 08/06/2026 16:22

Reverse?
DS’s school are fairly lax on uniform so he wears whatever is comfortable.

MaCheCazzo · 08/06/2026 16:24

I suspect this OP was intending a bit of rage bait here and it's ended up being just about as effective as custard bait. Unless, of course, it's our old friend the plimsoll t......

TomatoesintheGreenhouse · 08/06/2026 15:58

So tradtional leather lace up shoes with no padding would be better? Ballet shoes? Mary Janes? I'd much rather mine were in trainers.

Exactly. The rubbish Clarks school shoes for girls that would fall apart after half a term. Used to drive me insane. Not sure why OP thinks trainers are bad for feet. Most people wear trainers all day now, don’t they?

Secretseverywhere · 08/06/2026 16:31

Our local high school are part of the black trainers, honestly it’s fine. I do think overall it’s probably better to buy Nike type stuff as it tends to be harder wearing. My two will often kill supermarket trainers in a matter of weeks as they are poorly made. Asda ones were particularly shocking, Aldi ones much better but still.

Given these kids are always being told they are too sedentary being able to run around without needing to change shoes is a good thing.

Talkingfrog · 08/06/2026 16:33

I can't see why trainers are bad for their feet. They are designed for active wear.

There is a wider range for parents/childten to choose from if being able to get black trainers or shoes than just shoes.

Price range for both can vary greatly, so not necessarily more expensive.

Parents only having to buy trainers, that they can also wear for pe means not having to buy two items of footwear, and means children don't have to carry trainers when they have pe.

I am pleased that DC school allows trainers or shoes. Getting footwear that fits and feels comfortable isn't easy. Without being able to get trainers it would be even more difficult.

I wear sketchers most days including to work. Others in work also wear trainers/ sketchers. You also see lots of hospital staff in trainers too.

I take it you don't buy shoes then? A decent pair of trainers cost about 50% of the price of a decent pair of shoes.

Plus they are longer lasting unless your child polishes and cares of them

CheerfulYank · 08/06/2026 16:34

As opposed to what?
