AIBU to think schools should not allow students to wear black trainers all day, every day?

My child's high school is allowing students to wear black trainers all day. I think this is bad for their feet, more expensive for parents, and a drop in standards.

AIBU?

It is a drop in standards and speaks to low aspirations. What's the rest of the uniform like? Polo's?

fenow · 08/06/2026 18:28

I wish my dd could wear black AF1 in school. They are amazing for her flat feet.

'Low aspirations' with regard to what?

And yet, amazingly enough, there are many young people all over the world who aren't stuffed into polyester suit wannabes and rubbish school shoes - because they live in countries where there is no obsession with uniform. They achieve, they aspire, they have high standards. Are British young people somehow genetically different and less able so that they need to have endless conformity drilled into them?

I think better of our young people. Ask yourself why you don't.

I can never get my head around why British school children are groomed to look like bank managers from the 1950s.

How are trainers bad for their feet? What would be preferable?

this link gives a basic run down of why wearing trainers for everyday wear is not good for your feet and muscles and what to wear to create natural foot movement

Are trainers good for your feet?

Do you run, play in a team, do a fitness class? Don't stop reading if not! I’m not here to encourage you to do more exercise. But if you do, or have done, you may well have found it tricky to find the right pair of trainers. The perfect pair that fits...

I have no NO patience with the uniform police
Far more important things to worry about

EnoughRain · 08/06/2026 19:04

They’re trainers, not plimsolls. I see no issue, and probably much better for growing feet than some of the cheap fashion school
shoes kids wear.

TeaCupTinsel · 08/06/2026 19:21

Our school have allowed black trainers for years and it's so much more comfy for the students. It's an oversubscribed school and a good one at that. Practicality and comfort for students is really important.

Pssedoffathis · 08/06/2026 19:34

My sons school have allowed trainers throughout primary and now in secondary they can wear smart black trainers if they look like shoes, or shoes. A lot of trainer brands now do a school shoe style.
My secondary age son would never wear aomething like clarkes. We tried next and a few other school shoe brands for a while but they were not hard wearing at all and broke and slipped of his feet and were impractical for breaktime football.
He has had his lates pair of black nike air force 1s for nearly a whole year, he has a gel insole too and they are still going strong and also he likes being able to play football at breaktime, walk home and other active things a lot more easily.
I am all for trainers as school shoes.

This post is very funny... as I do my high powered global leadership job in my pyjamas some days.

Mermaidsarereal · 08/06/2026 19:38

I wish my DDs school would allow it! The amount of money I spend on school shoes because they either fall apart or give her blisters is crazy!

Nodirectionhome · 08/06/2026 19:43

My DS's school allowed this in 2008. He wore Reebok Classics then. I tried them and bought them for myself as they were so comfortable.

I have gone through many pairs of them since and still wear them every day.

Ablondiebutagoody · 08/06/2026 16:36

I agree and what's the point of looking smart in blazer, shirt, tie, trousers......then putting on a scuffed up pair of trainers? It looks shit.

Why would you wear scuffed up trainers? The trainer brands all have a school shoe model now, nice black leather lace up etc. Clarkes school shoes look more trainer like than the actual trainers. Added pictures below of thr Nike air force 1 trainers and Clarkes school shoe.. which are extremely similar

Both my teens wore Nike AF1’s from yr 5/6 until yr11, they always looked smart were good hard wearing sturdy footwear. I never had to worry about DD wearing silly heels etc. My DS now wear them for work and college. Both my teens have good healthy feet as far as I’m aware - not squashed in heels or winklepickers.
If anything the whole school more or less wore AF1’s, they all looked smart and matched.

Glittertwins · 08/06/2026 19:47

Trainers are far more supportive than shoes and harder wearing too. I’d rather mine were allowed to wear them for school as their feet would not have ached as much.

My son goes to a school where they can wear black trainers he has leather Nike ones and they still look smart. No losing his shoes getting changed for PE, they can play footy at break comfortably it's a win win. And his Nikes were £50!

JLou08 · 08/06/2026 20:04

They're not bad for feet.
They're not more expensive in my experience either. I've tried lots of brands of school shoes and none have been as durable as trainers.

My son’s nike’s were £35. This is compared to the £70 clarks shoes we nearly purchased 😱😱😱😱😱

franksmama · 08/06/2026 20:28

Much better for their feet. I wasn’t allowed to wear trainers for my bar job after spending the whole day in theatre clogs on my nursing placement. I developed plantar fasciitis in both feet which lasted six months and I was crippled. Long live the trainers!

PrayForPlagues · 08/06/2026 20:34

I’m a secondary teacher, have been for 20 years or so. I wish my school would relax the uniform policy so kids could be comfier. I don’t understand the fascination with dressing kids up in shirts, ties & blazers like wee mini business men. I’d much rather have my female students in leggings and a hoodie than the tiny bum—hugger skirts that mean I frequently can see their pants.

I completely agree. Trainers look very untidy. They are for walking, sports and gardening.

I hate seeing polo shorts instead of proper shirts as well.

I strongly recommend you don't stray into any tech/creative industries workplace. You'll get the shock of your life.
