AIBU to think schools should not allow students to wear black trainers all day, every day?

My child's high school is allowing students to wear black trainers all day. I think this is bad for their feet, more expensive for parents, and a drop in standards.

AIBU?

I welcome it. More hard wearing!

HuglessDouglass · Yesterday 15:53

How are trainers bad for their feet? What would be preferable?

NotSmallButFunSize · Yesterday 15:53

Our school wear them, they look fine and my kids say they are comfy to wear so winner for me!

Roomonthe3rdfloor · Yesterday 15:54

Presuming its optional, your kids don’t have to wear them so whats the issue?

Cioccoholic · Yesterday 15:55

How on earth is it bad for their feet? Presumably they change for PE…

takealettermsjones · Yesterday 15:55

Aren't trainers the best thing for feet, support-wise? I mean there's a reason athletes aren't sprinting in Docs.

And I'm sure the school aren't saying you have to spring for Nikes!

ThatGreenFawn · Yesterday 15:55

I would welcome this, they are hard wearing, survive lunchtime football much better than normal shoes and are comfy. What's not to like?

HappyMuma · Yesterday 15:55

I have to buy shoes and trainers so being able to wear trainers surely saves money?? And I bet the trainers the teenagers are wearing look a hell of a lot smarter than my 14 year olds shoes at this point in the year!!

Thirteenblackcats · Yesterday 15:56

Sounds sensible to me. So much more comfortable

Mistymaglets · Yesterday 15:56

Most of our kids wear trainers all day, every day and so do I and I'm a teacher.
Much more comfortable and practical for everyone.

YABU

They're not bad for feet, it is less expensive than having to buy trainers and formal shoes, and I don't see the connection between standards and footwear styles.

WheretheFishesareFrightening · Yesterday 15:56

Are you sending your child in barefoot smart shoes? If not, you’re probably damaging their feet anyway and trainers might be better in any event.

Everydayimhuffling · Yesterday 15:57

They're better for their feet. That's one of the primary arguments for allowing it.

TheRubyExpert · Yesterday 15:57

My school didn’t have a uniform and we didn’t have to wear school shoes and I’ve turned out ok.

Most employers these days are OK with trainers anyway.

Ineedanewsofa · Yesterday 15:58

I wear trainers all day most days, corporate office. Absolute lifesaver when I had nerve and tendon issues.
Sounds very sensible to me!

TomatoesintheGreenhouse · Yesterday 15:58

So tradtional leather lace up shoes with no padding would be better? Ballet shoes? Mary Janes? I'd much rather mine were in trainers.

Isittimeformynapyet · Yesterday 15:58

Would a different colour be better for their foot health OP?

smallglassbottle · Yesterday 15:59

Trainers aren't bad for the feet. Hospital physiotherapists usually wear them all day. I didn't get rid of my plantar fasciitis until I started wearing them. Lots of older people wear them now as well because they're supportive and cushioned. If they're plain black then they don't particularly stand out. They're often more affordable than traditional school shoes and they don't squash and compress the feet like synthetic leather. Real leather is now unaffordable for school shoes.

Theseagullsarenowclouds · Yesterday 15:59

Yabu. Trainers are better for feet and better for walking to school.

Most people wear smart trainers in offices their days.

DeltaVariant · Yesterday 15:59

Sod standards. Overly restrictive blazer and tie combos with no permission to remove in hot weather combined with dress shoes is crackers for full day wear.

Bring on the drop in standards with trainers! Our school allows joggers and a hoody … comfortable kids can learn better.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · Yesterday 15:59

Much better for their feet, and you can generally get trainers far more cheaply than a decent pair of shoes, they generally last longer as well.

Maddy70 · Yesterday 16:01

Trainers are better for feet!

bootsonotherfoot · Yesterday 16:02

I think children should wear what they’re comfortable in. Why should someone else dictate what you wear on your feet for goodness sake. Schools need to back off with their rigid policies.
its all just conditioning children from a young age to conform without questioning, just as the government needs them to so start young and they won’t know any different just as their brainwashed parents didn’t.

VitaminX · Yesterday 16:02

Surely trainers are better for your feet than smart shoes? And of course it's not more expensive, because you'd have to have trainers anyway.

No they're not as smart but I don't think that really matters to be honest.

My kids are in school in a shoes-off-inside country and spend the school day in their socks, putting on trainers to go outside for play time. This is even better for their feet, but not at all smart 😆

Poorly fitting shoes - whether trainers or any other type of shoe - are bad for feet. The good thing about trainers is they tend to have a nice wide toe box. The bad thing is they can sometimes be too sweaty, thus leading to a greater chance of fungal infections.
