AIBU to wonder how we spent so much doing nothing?

We were all exhausted this weekend, and literally didn't move further than 1 mile from our house.

How is it possible to spend so much money going nowhere and doing nothing?

Sorry if being vague - multi tasking.

I guess my point is we literally haven't left anywhere that's not walking distance from our house, haven't done anything fancy, and it's amazing how quickly the coffee's etc add up.

If you're too 'busy' to make any sense, just don't start a thread expecting people to know WTAF you're on about.

Life is expensive, buying coffee out is expensive, there isn't a mile exclusion zone around your house where everything is free.

coulditbeme2323 · Yesterday 11:47

That's good economical sense.

Lets go and drop 300k on stamp duty to save 3 quid on a sourdough.

That's a lot of sourdoughs!

Ah, I was just trying to help think of ways that you could feel like you’d had a nice treat at the weekend instead of feeling hard done by 💐

CaptainBeefheartspal · Yesterday 11:50

It is harder to resist temptation when you have nice and easy spots for brunch/lunch/dinner on your doorstep but I find Bills very overpriced. I am a sucker for Gail’s though and pop in at least twice a week for a cheese straw, baguette or a cake. It all adds up.

I hope that you are being more thorough with your other tasks

🤣🤣🤣👍🏻🤣🤣

TheWineoftheChicken · Yesterday 11:52

Anyway, as you’d be buying a house of around £3.85m to incur £300k stamp duty charges, I’m sure you can afford your coffees and brunches, even if they don’t feel like a treat.

I don't think anybody is massively interested in what we spent, I think my point was more that you can spend doing nothing and have nothing to show for it!

Well, no, actually you can't.

Money doesn't just leave your account by itself. You might not be happy how you spent it, but YOU still spent it

Heylittlesongbird · Yesterday 11:54

Is this a recurring theme for you OP? Wasn't it you a month ago who was shocked how much you spent on a weekend in London?

TheChosenTwo · Yesterday 11:54

The worst thing about all of this is spending a single penny at Bills, the absolute worst of the chain restaurants in my local town. Dire.

Op you had a lazy weekend and paid for convenience. That’s where your money went.

we have times like this but we go out and eat at nice places which require a drive and then come home again via the butcher for something for dinner. This weekend - £150 on lunch out for 3 of us, £80 on steak for 4 of us, £140 to fill dhs car up with fuel, stopped at M&S to get stuff to go with dinner £60 (included a bottle of wine!) and it’s only been about 3 hours being out of the house. Feels like ‘nothing’.
But the difference is I do know where the money has gone and appreciate that we have it to spend and don’t spend time pondering where it’s gone.

I never understand why people buy shampoos etc in boots. It's £2-4 more expensive than other shops, go to savers, b&m, home bargains, supermarkets etc. I would say the reason you spend so much is because you spend willy nilly, you could have easily got them in your tesco order.

Was thinking the same. I can't remember the last time I bought shower gel etc in Boots when there is HB's

I pretend Gail’s doesn’t exist. I’m not sure what size I’d be if I opened the door to Gail’s.
paying through the nose to eat at Bills.. I totally understand ops not registering it as ‘ an event’.. £50 for not very much, very mid level event. Just not worth it. Everything so expensive.. Gail’s stuff is expensive, but delicious!

Dweetfidilove · Yesterday 11:57

So Gail's is crap.
Rodeo is crap
Bill's is crap.
All overpriced crap!

This thread is proving quite useful after all.

Bunnycat101 · Yesterday 11:57

I think essentially you have to reframe your thinking a bit in that the takeaway and brunch were things that you did.

The things that is truly count as the hidden spending would be the coffee during swimming and the coffees on Sunday.

The bulk of the spend is the food shop (£180), toiletries (£30) and butcher (£45) which could have just been weakly shop if done another day. The sour dough is sort of in this category too. Now it’s probably on the more expensive side all in so there must have been some treats in there too.

Then I guess your spend on the books (£5) chopping boards (£15) and donuts (8) are more of the discretionary spending.

You got ripped off in the charity shop. Our local community centre sells second hand kids' books for 25p.

And political autobiographies they give me for free!

I’ve never heard of Rodeo. The treat doughnuts here are Crosstown. Peanut butter and blackberry being my favourite.

Sorry if people are really that interested, but I promise you it's very dull.

And I am going to round up for ease.

Saturday morning £4 coffee while youngest two had swimming club.
Saturday ordered Tesco's £180 for Sunday (can't really count that)
Saturday £30 at Boots on shower gels, toothpaste etc.
Saturday Butchers £45 on chicken breasts and burgers
Saturday evening Chinese takeaway for 2 adults and 3 kids £70

Sunday £10 on coffee x2 with husband
Sunday £5 3 Famous Five Books from charity shop
Sunday £4 Sourdough from Gails
Sunday Brunch hubby only at Bills £50
Too good to go Rodeo donuts £8
Chopping Boards TK Max £15

I told you it was dull!

That’s not “doing nothing”! That’s a relatively busy weekend!

if you’re going to be in and out with trips constantly, butchers, swimming, boots, coffee, lunch, takeout, bookshop, tk maxx etc yes you will spend a fair amount of money. Doesn’t matter that they’re walking distance.

i suggest next time you have a weekend “doing nothing” you sit on the sofa watching tv and eating cereal. You’ll find it costs a lot less than multiple trips to the shop 🙄

I think your idea of doing nothing and mine are different.

Me too. Going out for food AND getting a takeaway in the same weekend is definitely not “nothing” in this house. We felt lazy last night so I sent dh to the chip shop for chips to go with the chicken and peas I was cooking but even that felt a bit extravagant.

I mean if you are going to be "ripped off" surely a charity shop is the best place for it to happen?

Sounds pricey. We went to The Ivy in Cheltenham for brunch last weekend (which wasn’t all that great TBH) and it was £30 for the 2 of us, with unlimited refills on the coffee.
