AIBU to wonder how we spent so much doing nothing?

We were all exhausted this weekend, and literally didn't move further than 1 mile from our house.

How is it possible to spend so much money going nowhere and doing nothing?

Pre VAT I could take my children out for a pizza or to Leon or something once or twice a month. (We still only had tap water though ;-) )

I could meet a friend for brunch without panicking.

I parent alone and the financial burden is all mine. So I really do think about people being able to just pick up doughnuts or have brunch and coffee in the manner of Tiny Tim pressing his face up against a window!

How very dreadful that you choose to spend huge amounts of money on something optional and then don't have as much as you'd like to spend on other optional things 😿

Your kids are privately educated, trust me you aren't Tiny Tim!

We have £961 per month to spend on everything after school fees and essential bills are paid. £961 for food, petrol, cleaning products, clothes, shoes, swim lessons etc, holidays... Everything. I actually do feel like Tiny Tim! Two dc. One adult paying for it all. Very tired adult who would love to go out for brunch sometimes!

My son asked to pick up some KK on too good to go, they had sold out so we tried Rodeo.

I don't think bringing a donut back for your kids is extreme.

It isn't, but then if you choose to spend £8 on doughnuts... You can't really complain that you've spent loads of money on "nothing"

Not optional for me. One dc on a huge bursary/scholarship. One SEN. Trust me. Not optional. My children's education and happiness (they both LOVE school) comes before everything for me. Every time.

Are they that bad? I drove past one last week and thought, at some point I'll go see what the fuss is all about.

I think it must vary branch to branch. We have one in a nearby town I don't get to very often, but the coffee & bakery items are nice, they're not cheap, but nowhere is now 💁🏻‍♀️

Well one day I will, when they finish A levels! Give up school fees so I can have brunch out and afford a haircut? Nope.

How odd. Surely once you’ve remembered “oh wait….a lot goes on school fees” you don’t feel quite so hard done by?

Then don't, but people who send their children private are not on the breadline!

Thats your choice - they could easily go to college to do A levels and not stay at private school - that is your choice to prolong the small budget on life

It’s hardly doing nothing when you’ve clearly been out shopping and eating out, ffs some of these threads are daft.

It is a choice you have made ie optional.
You may well prioritise it above other things, but it not essential like food and shelter.
Most people do not have the option.

That's true. I don't begrudge a penny on the fees (the VAT element I do rather though). But I still work extremely hard and can't afford most of the small luxuries I had all the time in my pre-parent life. It just sometimes feels quite hard. It's not forever, but it is life right now and counting every penny takes a toll, whatever the reason.

Yeah, if I didn't pay fees we would be pretty well off. That's true!

Of course it's still optional. You are making it a high priority but another family decide that eating out, working less hours, travelling or supporting an expensive hobby was more important.

OP are you one of those Mumsnetters who thinks that a £100k salary 'is not that much', lives in 'a modest 4 bed house' but claims you are frugal because your car is 'just a 15 YO Golf' that you hardly ever have to use because you live in walking distance from an area that is affluent enough to have a Gail's and has all the other amenities you need?

🤣🤣affluent enough to have a Gails

True. It is teeming with rain outside, and grey, and dull. This thread has made me laugh out loud, several times!

What lengths will you go to, to put your children through private school?

One could go to 6th form state college. But has a generous scholarship and bursary where they are. The other absolutely couldn't. Not all children are compliant, self motivated NT children who thrive in any school they are put into.

What would you do if (like most people) you could not afford private?

It's still something that was done on the weekend.
You're saying you did "nothing".

Well seriously you can't count taking kids to a regular swiunv club as having done something at the weejend

buying coffee while there isn't 'going out for coffee'
