AIBU to ask my next door neighbours not to smoke indoors?

BeansOnToast41 · 05/06/2026 14:27

Genuinely not sure what my own opinion is on this so intrigued to see what the consensus is. My house is an end-of-terrace and the next door neighbours smoke indoors (sometimes normal cigarettes, sometimes weed). I’ve no major issue with smokers, but because they’re doing it inside, the smell comes through to my living room. We’ve not mentioned it to the neighbours and haven’t decided if we will or not (to be fair it isn’t constant) but I’m wondering if it would even be acceptable to ask someone not to do something which they’re well within their rights to do in their own home.

Voting is:

IABU = no you can’t ask someone not to do something in their own home
IANBU = yes totally fine to say something because the smell is coming through the wall

I think it depends entirely on the sort of people they are. If they are lovely and obliging and would hate to inconvenience anyone, you may drop lucky. However, will it be any better in the garden drifting through your windows? I lived next door to a weed smoker and could occasionally smell it in some rooms. However it was nothing compared to when they smoked in the yard. My washing, even my cat stank of it.

This is it really. From some of the replies you can tell that a lot wouldn’t even in engage in a chat. But they may not even realise the smell travels.

i think people have made a good point that smoking outside is probably going to not help either as it could drift in through the windows.

im lucky that I don’t live around smokers so we’ve not had to contend with it.

the best bet is to look at the wall and see if something can be done your side and then look at the air purifiers so you’re not breathing it in and it doesn’t cling to your curtains/furniture etc.

BIossomtoes · 05/06/2026 17:08

If I was still a smoker asked this my response would be two words, the second one being off. The temerity of trying to restrict people’s freedom in their own home!

Bloodorangekangaroo · 05/06/2026 17:09

My neighbor smokes weed and it stinks. It’s so bad. You can smell it in my home at times. It stinks even though he does it in the garden at times. I haven’t bothered telling him as he not going to stop smoking it. I wish people who smoked especially weed knew how bad the smell is. He’s a regular for collecting his drugs from the local dealer. I won’t be approaching him.

What do your neighbours cook that can cause cancer, and increase the chances of things fro asthma to meningitis in children, from smelling it?!? Thats some crazy food.

Of course fumes from cooking can cause cancer. It's been well known for years.

How on earth did you not know this?

Depends how you ask?
Knock knock - hello I'm your neighbour stop smoking. Yabu
Six months down the track your pretty friendly with Gill and Ben next door and your chatting one day.. oh gill I can't half smell your cigarettes in x room.... Would there be any possibility you would consider avoiding that room whenever you remember? Yanbu

It may not be faint though.

everyone experiences smells differently. I am very sensitive to smells.

and those comparing it to food smells are missing the point that smoking can cause health conditions and passive smoking has implications too. So if it is coming through vents and air bricks then there is a health concern.

smelling fish and garlic won’t cause you harm.

2nd smoke through walls is gonna be bugger all risk. Frankly ridiculous

Kirbert2 · 05/06/2026 18:22

My son has already had cancer and now has a higher risk of cancer in the future so if I didn't feel the neighbour was approachable, I'd see what I could do on my end to prevent it or call environment health and see where I stood/if they had any suggestions.

Please educate yourself.

a quick google will tell you that smoke can travel. Any smell can throughout the air. It’s about how the particles travel.

of course the risk is less if there is less smoke. But continued breathing in of smoke via cracks, plumbing, air vents, air bricks and other means will add up. For most people the risk is low. But those with health conditions may be affected.

will be the same for weed.

OP should look at how she can reduce it from her side. It’s the joys of living around others. Plenty of info out there but copied one of the links below if that helps.

no idea. I was just responding to the health issue part.

think it came from the comment re environmental health comment someone made and I suggested yes it is if it’s coming into the home.

no idea what they’d do though.

My friend lived next to someone who was hoarding their own excitement. Took 8 years for the council to take action about that & it smelled like a farmyard & was alive with flies. So I'd think the chances of any action on smoking would be zero. It's batshit anyway. Where would it end? Only allowed to start petrol & diesel vehicles half a mile from the nearest human on a cold morning?

InterIgnis · 05/06/2026 18:54

Gettingbysomehow · 05/06/2026 14:46

Well I certainly did. My new neighbours moved in and stunk my house out 24 hours a day with their disgusting cigarettes.
I once went round there at three in the morning and said can you stop smoking next to my bedroom because it stinks and I'm working tomorrow. I hadn't had any proper sleep for weeks because of their stench.
So they stopped smoking in the house.
I'm not putting up with that.
If they refuse you can do something - you can get a special air purifier which will take it out of the air and reduce the smell, it must have a carbon filter. The one I looked at was about £500 because it needed to cover quite a large area.
Or you can complain to the council who will tell you what you need to do to prove your complaint, and environmental health if it's affecting your health.

Environmental health wouldn’t be interested. It’s a legal activity that they are free to do in their own private residence if they so choose. If you object then the onus is on you to put preventative measures in place, or move.

Your neighbors were kind enough to honor your request, but they didn’t have to.

vodkaredbullgirl · 05/06/2026 18:57

OP, you will have to tell us how you get on when you ask.

Elsvieta · 05/06/2026 19:36

With weed you can, because it's illegal. You could give them the option of knocking it off themselves before you call the police.

Tobacco, sadly no.

Batshit to hoard excitement too 😂

Savvysix1984 · 05/06/2026 19:39

I’d rather in the house than in the garden.

Ohgoose · 05/06/2026 19:51

You can’t ask them not to smoke but you could research ways to reduce it coming through to your house and see if there’s anything they can do their side.

SkippitySkoppity · 05/06/2026 20:04

I lived in an old Victorian flat and had this issue. A new tenant moved in, they'd light up and the smell of cigarettes would instantly fill my flat. It wasn't a faint smell either. So I asked the guy as sweetly as I could if he'd mind smoking outdoors instead. He said yes, and mostly stuck to it. So you never know! Ignore the spluttering indignants and give it a go.

Livpool · 05/06/2026 20:06

I HATE smoking, and it makes my asthma worse but YABU

The article you have linked does not back up your assertion that cooking fines cause cancer.

whatcanthematterbe81 · 05/06/2026 20:24

This is crazy, mainly because I’m shocked it goes next door. I’m always making curry’s and now I’m worried my neighbours can smell it! I agree is horrible to sneak smoke so not really commenting on but to be fair, I’m just shocked smells go through walls 🥴

shelvedplans · 05/06/2026 20:34

@BeansOnToast41 there’s an issue. Either they can sort it out or you can sort it out. They are entitled to do as they please in their own home, so that rules them out, which leaves it with you to sort. Improve your walls!

Did you really just respond to a question about fumes reaching your house from elsewhere, the only topic being asked about, with that . . . . . .

If nothing else the risk of the fumes reaching your house being an issue to you from somewhere else, is effectively zero even if the person was cooking at extreme heats with specific oils for years. If you can smell cigarette smoke, it is always poisoning you. And many of the cancer causing fumes that can still reach you, have no smell and can still be impacting you or children even if you cant smell anything from that neighbour smoking.

I didn’t ask about if you were cooking in unventilated spaces with extreme heat with specific oils daily for years could this cause cancer, because that would be changing the topic.

I don't smoke but I absolutely would wet myself with laughter if I did and a neighbour asked me not to do it in my own home!

So you wouldn’t even be concerned that they can smell it? How selfish.

Honestly op, I can imagine it must be horrible for you, it would drive me absolutely mad. But unfortunately you can’t ask them to stop. Well you can ask, but they will probably tell you to piss off.

This is literally the first sentence:

Were you trying to be funny or did you just not read it??!

Selfish to please yourself in your own home that you pay for? I really have heard it all now.
