I have a lot more sympathy when it's a very young person - so their general knowledge might be very limited, but they can still mop up the questions about TikTok and Sabrina Carpenter that the middle aged contestants - and often the Chasers themselves - won't have the faintest idea about.

It's a very interesting dynamic when they do The Family Chase (I don't think they made many of them, though), as you often get Mum & Dad doing the heavy lifting, maybe one of them going high, and then being perfectly happy for the young adult children to just get themselves back. It's totally different from when it's four strangers who are each thinking they'd rather get the maximum amount and share it as few ways as possible.

I still never forget the celeb episode with Rory McGrath in seat 4 - he's well-known for having a huge amount of general knowledge and confidence and also bragging about it; but then he actually went low! Even if he'd gone in the middle, it would have been shocking enough!

AWeeCupOfTeaAndAnIndividualFruitTrifle · 03/06/2026 23:30

There was another celeb one with Claire from Steps. She got £6K in the cash-builder, but then Anne went for the gag and gave her a low offer of £5,678. She'd have been stupid not to take that.

BashfulClam · 03/06/2026 23:36

Infestation they should have that value taken off their share! I

InterestedDad37 · 03/06/2026 23:39

I hate it when cowardice infects the team - like person 3 will be up, they're only on 5 grand with 2 people 'home', and one says "yeah, take the minus 1, it's still a grand each' - don't you flipping well dare, I hiss at my screen, and go and crush a grape in anger 😀

Sometimes it’s a tactical decision. The extra person can make the difference between a win or a lose even if they don’t answer anything. A minus offer of 10,000 from a massive pot (when one player has gone high and won) isn’t that big of a deal if it secures the win.

I didn’t see today’s but I guess if it’s from a smaller amount it’s different. I wouldn’t take a minus offer unless it was from a large amount but I’d be tempted if it was in the +++

Gosh I’ve thought about this too much…

The thing is, though - and you can often guess or even tell from the faces and body language of the strong players - that they would prefer the weak player to lose and be knocked out, rather than get through by going low, reducing the whole pot and then making them have to split it another way.

If a couple of you are really good, smart and quick, it must be galling to do all of the work in the final chase between you (other than the automatic step per player) and then only get a quarter rather than a half, whilst two dingbats who just stood there in a world of their own for two minutes get exactly the same - especially if they actually reduced the total by going for the minus.

It doesn't happen very often, but I have seen a few episodes where only one person has got through but has then gone on to beat the chaser and win. One woman called Isobel was absolutely amazing and she bagged herself £60K. Being alone and not having to buzz in and wait to hear your name can get you quite a few precious extra seconds.

Sweetpea232 · 03/06/2026 23:50

I was on the Chase recently.

we all encouraged one player to go low because they had ‘earned’ so little, their being in the final chase at all was worth much more than what they had earned.

They went low, and got to the final chase.

we won the money by one point, in the final seconds. If any one of us hadn’t got through, we’d have lost.

I ‘earned’ half the teams winnings, but didn’t begrudge sharing it one little bit - because what won it was all four being there in the final, not any individual performance.

bolognazey · 04/06/2026 04:54

Absolutely loving this thread. I would love to know what the day out involves apart from filming I.e. do you get to spend time with the chaser or Bradley. And what type of lunch they give you!

Rip Denis locorietre .

I hate when they take the low offer too.
And don't get me started on deal or no deal when they kiss people who have red money, like they gave it to them personally. The poor old blue money people dont even get a look in. I cant stand these stupid tv shows

MyLimeGuide · 04/06/2026 06:41

I agree they are the scum of the earth!

That’s very similar to DH’s episode.

They also knew from the cash builder that the player they encouraged to take the minus knew a lot about sport, which neither DH or the lady who was back with him did so could be valuable.

In the end that’s how it worked out. If he hadn’t got back they wouldn’t have won. A third of the smaller amount (9k each) was better than half of nothing.

I need to find these rants on twitter!

Some of them are just clickbaiters waiting in the wings to strike and stoke up outraged fury, as soon as somebody takes a minus offer.

I mean, I know it can be a controversial action, but it's a very normal, baked-in part of the show. It's not like somebody has deployed a nuclear stink bomb in the studio and run off through the fog cloud with the contents of the prize safe.

For me, it was like being a film star for a day. I stayed over in Borehamwood the night before. Someone collected us from the hotel after breakfast and after that it was a day of here, there and everywhere 😮

You take three outfits down with you and the stylists select what they'd like you to wear. They press it and return it to your dressing room; yes, you get your own dressing room 😍

First, the team give you an overview of the day. Then you get pulled away for some question practice and advice (don't get stuck in a pass cycle and so on). Then you grab a quick lunch and while you're still having lunch, you get called to makeup 😮

Before the audience arrives, you get a look at the auditorium and guidance on where you'll be sitting and what to do when your name is called. I left my water bottle there: bit careless 🤦‍♀️ I attempted to go back but was told that one of the runners would get it. It was all a bit out there; I'm so used to looking after myself.

Then it's back to the dressing room and into your outfit and someone comes to walk you over to the venue. The Dark Destroyer was sitting just outside, high fiving us all as we went in 😍

After I'd done, I went back to the Green Room and watched the remainder of the guys on the screen.

They film three shows a day on Beat the Chasers and so Brad and the Chasers are working all day and don't get time to chat.

I absolutely loved it but ..... it was a one-off experience. I'd absolutely hate to be an actress or a pop star; I just couldn't deal with it.

Give it a go; it's brilliant 😍

Yes!

And they should be able to hiss at the contestants even pondering it

That would really just turn it into The Weakest Link!

Thank you so much for replying @TheEyesOfLucyJordon it is so interesting to hear how it all works! Was the lunch nice? Was it like a buffet?
I don’t think I could apply myself, I feel nervous just thinking about it!
I’m assuming they told you when your episode would air and then you eagerly awaited the day to watch it?

sorry @mumofoneAloneandwell I don’t mean to derail your thread but it’s just interesting 😆

Shaun does seem really lovely. He was a guest on Jeremy Vine's Channel 5 show a while back, and he mentioned in passing that he always goes for a drink with the contestants afterwards, but he's the only Chaser who does.

I know it's his persona that he's completely dull and boring, but in real life, I think he'd be fascinating company. Also, without wanting to put down the other Chasers, they all seem to have quizzing as their only or main job (I may be wrong); whereas Shaun also just happens to be a barrister as his main occupation!

No 😊I was on Beat the Chasers where you play as a single player against several Chasers. I played five of the six and Shaun was the one to sit out. He was very jolly though as he greeted us. His grumpy persona is just for TV 😊

I can't remember much about lunch but I remember enjoying it. It was definitely portable as I went barrelling down to the makeup department while still eating 😮

There's no guarantee that your performance will make it to TV but yes, if you're going to be shown they contact you a couple of weeks before the date it airs and let you know. Because Beat the Chasers is a bit of a cult phenomenon, they advise you to lock down your social media as the Twittersphere goes mad when it comes on and the public are often mean about the contestants. I don't have Twitter (X, is it now?) but my niece had it on while we watched the programme. Someone decided that I "would make a good second wife for Roy Cropper", which I thought was funny. I got a really good write up in one of the tabloids and, on the whole, received really good support from the public 🙏
