AIBU to think Nicola Sturgeon is deflecting criticism with sexism claims?

Nicola Sturgeon is cosplaying the victim, claiming that her being questioned over her ex husband's criminality is anti-women.
Is she seriously playing the woman card, when she actively deflected any criticism or investigation into SNP finances?

What is this with all the Nicola bashing?

She was investigated thoroughly, and very publicly, by the police. No charges have been brought against her. The focus should be on Murrell, not on his ex wife.

As has been pointed out the first minister for the first 5 years of Murrell's tenure if the job was Salmond. Why isn't he being pilloried in relation to Murrell's criminality?

tilypu · 31/05/2026 19:14

I'm going to go with the results of the police investigation over the machinations of people with a chip on their shoulder for whatever reason.

Plenty of women discover their husbands have been up to things they shouldn't have been, long after the fact. Plenty of women that weren't working as long hours as she had to in order to keep a country running.

Did she know? No idea, but I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt, especially given that she faced an investigation and was cleared.

The question is: why do you doubt the police?

PillsBox · 31/05/2026 19:17

So many MNetters making her responsible for this man’s crimes.

She’s right, it’s bloody sexist.

Jellycatspyjamas · 31/05/2026 19:19

I think she’s got a bloody cheek claiming other people are anti-woman.

InconsequentialFerret · 31/05/2026 19:20

She's right, the focus isn't particularly on the man who defrauded the SNP, but on how much his wife knew, and how guilty is she really.

I just cannot imagine for a second that Police Scotland didn't overturn every possible stone, pebble and grain of sand in order to find something, anything, against her, no matter how tenuous.

But she's getting the trial by media and some of the general public anyway.

NeedAnyHelpWithThatPaperBag · 31/05/2026 19:24

People have been serial killers and their nearest and dearest didn't know, but it did sound a bit "playing the sympathy woman card", to me too.

Sounds more like calling out misogynistic shit to me.

He’s dead, and wasn’t married to him?

I don’t think it’s sexism that drives it. I think that if Victoria Starmer was found to have embezzled Labour Party funds (I’m aware she doesn’t work for the Labour Party), people would have the same attitude towards KS as they do to NS.

Willowskyblue · 31/05/2026 19:29

Slight side issue but given the jewellery, expensive bags and other trinkets she has received from PM over the years, should she not be held to account for “receiving” fraudulently obtained goods, just as someone handling stolen goods would usually be.

Yup, this.

CoraLdn · 31/05/2026 19:30

I am not a fan of her politics but she sounded completely believable to me. And, as was said before, she was already investigated. Some accusations are so unreasonable - if my husband bought a 2 grand pepper grinder , I wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between that and one from tk maxx.
he bought a car, hardly a Ferrari, and he was a childless guy on a good salary. Again, hardly unbelievable.

Zebrah · 31/05/2026 19:31

She signed off on the accounts with the motor home clearly visible on the balance sheet, and yet she’s playing the “poor old me, I’m just a stupid ditzy woman, how am I supposed to understand balance sheets”, card. It’s pathetic. Either she knew full well what he was up to or she was the most stupid woman going. Both in my book. Dire politician, pathetic excuse for a woman.

Please take it up with Police Scotland and get back to us.

I can't imagine them not charging her with something if there was anything at all they could charge her with.

She will have people whose job it is to point out something strange, she isn’t expected to read 100’s of pages personally.

Gloriia · 31/05/2026 19:35

Poor Nicola, how the mighty have fallen. All that finger wagging she did over BJ whilst she was living surrounded by stolen goods.

Her attempts to blame this on misogyny and sexism are ridiculous.

She knew nothing about Salmond's sex pesting and nothing about her husband's thieving. She's must be incredibly stupid if she thinks we'll fall for her Clinton esque denials.

PropertyD · 31/05/2026 19:35

She also said no comment to the questions and now he has pleaded guilty she doesn’t need to be called as a witness.

Christ have you ever seen a balance sheet. This detail was in no way tucked away in the notes. It was clear as day!

Er no. She is expected to read it all if she is signing it off.

It’s like the SNP have just discovered the word misogyny and are enjoying using it at every opportunity. See Mairi McAllan on debate night, bemoaning that she was being picked on for being female politician, when she was being picked on for talking 100% shite non-stop. The bile that they spout is only believed by their fans, and that’s cause their fans aren’t very bright. Some people actually believe Swinney will force the supermarkets to cap the price of foods!

PropertyD · 31/05/2026 19:44

I know but even if she trusted her husband and didn’t look at the figures someone else should have drawn her attention to it. She is a scary women so maybe they didn’t want to do it. Surrounded by yes people.

LMAO. She claimed to never be in the kitchen of her home. She claimed not to have noticed the big fuck off motorhome on her MIL’s drive. She claimed to not have shut down questions on the finances despite being in video doing so. Believable my ass.

I don’t necessarily agree. She should have had it pointed out to her as an area that needed looking at. As her husband had put the figures together she might have felt she could just sign them off. What the excuses were from the others is another matter.

Triskellion75 · 31/05/2026 19:46

She wasn't just 'the wife' though, she was leader of the party he was embezzling. People resigned because she refused to accept there was something dodgy going on, despite multiple complaints. She's on camera belligerently shutting down any notion of the party's finances being anything but healthy.

Frankly, after trying to put an actual rapist in a women's prison she can fuck off with the 'I'm a victim of sexism' shit. And I say all this as someone who used to really admire her.

She signed off the accounts when the treasurer refused to. She is on video viciously shitting down the NEC questioning the finances. She is culpable.

Many of whom resigned because they couldn’t get access to the accounts, including the auditors. At one point they couldn’t find a firm of accountants prepared to audit them.
