To consider cancelling my holiday because of the EES?

I just can’t cope with this stress. I will be travelling alone and I can’t afford (literally or mentally) to miss a flight because of this system.

I just don’t want to go. It’s looming over me. I did it in February going into Norway, but that makes no difference. You’re still in the queue for hours. I’m flying with Ryanair and they only open their bag drop 2 hours before, they’re now saying three hours to get through. So it’ll be literally impossible.

I want to go. I’m heartbroken that I’m going to have to cancel, but I guess that’s what spineless Starmer gets you. He’s more bothered by the football than getting us closer to Europe and sorting this mess out.

It’s nothing to do with the government being spineless. Why would the government focus on getting us closer with Europe when the Brexit referendum has been decided and there are much more urgent issues for the government to deal with?

DrumsPleaseFab · 30/05/2026 23:36

Instead of being heartbroken to not go, why not just fly with hand luggage only? To keep it more simple?

in your case cancelling may also be a good option really as I think the stress is wearing you out and holidays are meant to be a bit relaxing

Omg just don't fucking go then.

This, absolutely this.😂

geekone · 30/05/2026 23:36

I am currently in Portugal it’s been fine and getting out wilL be fine. This is on you not Starmer or Brexit or anything. Your anxiety is stopping you or, maybe you just want to call out the current government and you are either not going anywhere or you will
go anyway and complain a lot. Go enjoy your holiday op it’s possible whether your bag makes it or not.

idontwanttogoanymore · 30/05/2026 22:23

No, you can’t. It’s three hour queues in the airport to get through. I did it in Norway. You have to be seen by a person.

We went to Spain and adults were literally going through the gates in minutes. We meanwhile spent 20 mins or so in a family queue to see a person cos kids can’t use the gates.

On the way home it was a person. The queue got long so they began waving people through.

devuskums · 30/05/2026 23:56

You are being ridiculous. Just go on your holiday. You will be embarrassed when it is all fine, but we will be happy for you that your holiday has happened.

EternalDreamer · 30/05/2026 23:58

OP which Milan airport? I flew through Linate last month with no issues. You can use the egates there. I ended up having to go through manual gates but no queue.

RedToothBrush · 31/05/2026 00:01

idontwanttogoanymore · 30/05/2026 22:26

They have literally just said on the news you need to be through security three hours before your flight, but Ryanair make that a physical impossibility.

I flew last week.

Registration on entry took about ten minutes, which was fine as my flight was twenty minutes early so I had to hang around waiting for my friend picking me up!

On return I got to the airport 4 hrs early. It has electronic gates to security but was time limited to 2hrs before the flight. I tried at 2hrs 30 and it did allow me through. It was a doddle. Bit of a queue but through security in 15 mins and passport control took two minutes.

It very genuinely depends on which airport you are flying through and how busy the airport is.

I had been panicking about it all but it was a absolute breeze.

Now, I flew through Schiphol last year before the introduction of the gates. That took use nearly two hours to clear passport control. That was fun. I have a hatred of Schiphol which goes back several trips and I wish to avoid if at all possible regardless of the new system or not.

Tbh, I think it depends on the size of the airport and how many none EU flights there are. A small airport with only a couple of flights a day to none EU destinations is going to be much better than Schiphol which is a world gateway city and huge.

Ryanair by default, tends to fly from the smaller more provincial airports so is less likely to be an issue, than say easyJet who go through some of the bigger airports such as Schiphol.

Your biggest problem airports are likely to be Brits abroad hotspots.

Norway? No not so much of an issue.

Lucyccfc68 · 31/05/2026 00:05

I’ve read some ridiculous stuff on here, but this is probably one of the most ridiculous posts in a long time.

Between my son and I, we have flown to around 20 EU countries in the last 12 months, including Milan, Paris, Berlin, Lithuania etc. No issues with any of them. Lithuania gave us the longest delay, as we had to do our first finger print and photos and even then the delay was in Lithuania not the UK.

If you are really panicking that much, just cancel and sit in your back garden for the week.

It’s just heartbreaking. I’ve had this holiday planned for a year and now I can’t go because of fucking Brexit, which I’ve never agreed with. It’s maddening

Well you can go, you are catastrophising. Get a grip.

Rycbar · 31/05/2026 00:07

idontwanttogoanymore · 30/05/2026 22:57

They wouldn’t call you though would they 😂 you’re a travel agent and it’s a Saturday. You’d be their last thought

If I’d booked a holiday with a travel agent who gave me an emergency number to ring if things went wrong they’d absolutely be the first person I’d be ringing it I missed my flight!
my friend also works in travel and has the emergency phone - it gets called a lot! (More than it should tbh)

soontobeamama · 31/05/2026 00:08

It depends where you’re going - not all airports have adopted the EES yet. For the ones that have, it does not take that much longer than before; once you have done the initial scan, the e-gates are much quicker. Just get to the airport with plenty of time to spare and you’ll be fine.

Yet another inaccurate AI summary - OP they say "bag drop desk open at the latest 2 hours before flight departure" on the actual website, suggesting they are often open much earlier than that and more than likely will be for adapting to this new system, but AI is shit and makes stuff up!

https://help.ryanair.com/hc/en-gb/articles/12890531028497-How-far-in-advance-can-I-drop-my-bag-at-the-bag-drop-counter

Ryanair emailed us to say we should allow extra time at the airport. So we turned up 2.5 (rather than 2) hours before check in, only to be told when we got there that Ryanair don’t open check in until 2 hours before a flight!

Silverblue1985 · 31/05/2026 00:11

Ive just travelled from Milan (Linate) on Thursday. I have dual citizenship so went through on my EU passport, but the queue for non-EU was totally fine and nobody missed their flight. (I flew into Malpensa and the queue at passport control coming in was fine, too).
I’ve taken over 20 flights so far this year, and not seen any major issues (as in - people missing flights issues) so you’re more than likely going to be just ok.

Yes and Brexshit has made it impossible for me to go because I can't afford the thousands it would cost for travel insurance because I have cancer . I was denied by most and quoted 2, 500 pounds for 1 weeks insurance. 😡

Loreleily · 31/05/2026 00:17

Mate. I hate Brexit. I hate the idiots that voted for it. But it is now what it is. You’re being over the top.

You don’t sound like yoyll enjoy the holiday so cancel it. Your prerogative .

🤣🤣🤣 Absolutely this. OP charter a private plane or fake disability, book assistance and you’ll sail through. Or go to Blackpool.

They could easily negotiate a deal with the EU wherein we’re excluded from those checks. But he has to pretend to be a man of the people with his “Gooner” status.

How? Why would the EU agree? We left. It was our choice. You don’t get to be half in (even though we had a very favourable semi-detached arrangement before). We’ll never get any sort of concession again unless there’s mutual gain.

Temporaryname158 · 31/05/2026 00:35

You are seeing problems where there aren’t any/there are few.

if you don’t want to go that’s fine. Don’t. But lots of people, myself included have used the new scheme with ease.

how much do you want the holiday? Because even if I did end up queuing, it would still be worth it to me

Dandelyon · 31/05/2026 00:37

AmethystDeceiver · 30/05/2026 22:35

Why would Ryanair do something that means every single person flying with them will miss their flight??

@idontwanttogoanymore you're being unreasonable and your anxiety has got the best of you. If you think to yourself - it works for the majority of other people - will your brain get to: so it will probably work for me?

That's what I do when I have this kind of anxiety

To be fair, Ryanair is more than happy if you miss your flight and have to pay to take the next one.

SomeGarlic · 31/05/2026 00:38

It was in the papers last week that the airports handling a lot of UK tourists are dropping it for the summer. Keep an eye open, Milan is quite likely to.

I'm not travelling, so didn't bother looking into the details, but it seems like they're just going to wave the Brits through!
