To consider cancelling my holiday because of the EES?

I just can’t cope with this stress. I will be travelling alone and I can’t afford (literally or mentally) to miss a flight because of this system.

I just don’t want to go. It’s looming over me. I did it in February going into Norway, but that makes no difference. You’re still in the queue for hours. I’m flying with Ryanair and they only open their bag drop 2 hours before, they’re now saying three hours to get through. So it’ll be literally impossible.

Starmer's actually done loads to improve relations with the EU and strengthen ties, but of course he couldn't prevent this system being implemented or get the UK out of it, regardless of what is happening with Arsenal.

I flew to Cologne last week with Ryanair and thought the queues on arrival were similar to what they have been for some time - the days of swanning through the EU gates are long gone. It was a bit of a queue to get through passport control on the way home- around 20 minutes, nothing drastic.

I got a notification from Ryanair saying to get there 3 hours early and I loved the way it said something like 'These new rules are nothing to do with Ryanair. It will be the EU's fault if you miss your flight, not ours!' or something like that. I love the Ryanair style of communication.

How? Why would the EU agree? We left. It was our choice. You don’t get to be half in (even though we had a very favourable semi-detached arrangement before). We’ll never get any sort of concession again unless there’s mutual gain.

Exactly. EU citizens have to get a prior authorisation to enter the UK as well.

Tinkerwebbo · 31/05/2026 00:42

Gosh. Sorry but you’re totally overwhelmed and catastrophising, and saying it’s the ‘end of the world’ shows you’re leading quite the privileged life. Chill

Augarden · 31/05/2026 00:44

This is not about Brexit, it is about Schengen which we were not in anyway.
Get on the flight, it is most likely going to be fine. Go without hold luggage if you're really stressed about it.

CotswoldsCamilla · 31/05/2026 00:47

Hand luggage only and stop listening to the news…?

Have a lovely holiday and think about some therapy when you get back, catastrophising is not good for your stress levels.

purpleme12 · 31/05/2026 00:53

You keep referring to what's been on sky news
But I've seen them say on sky news that RyanAir has said that they'll be opening the check in earlier anyway
So it's all ok

Mondaymanic · 31/05/2026 00:55

I've flown through Germany and Spain in the last few weeks. All fine.

Flew to Tenerife with my 4 year old, which has been in the news about the EES system. and queues outside the airport.

I had checked bags.

My experience… I was off the plane through security and into my transfer within 40 minutes. I was the last person off the plane. There was a long queue, I had to see a border guard, as I was travelling with my daughter, but it went down fairly quickly. All of the adults without kids just headed to the egates and straight out.

On my way home, I arrived 3.5 hours before, checked my bags again. Security took 5 minutes, the border check leaving took 20 minutes and then I was just waiting around for an hour and a half before the flight.

it was over a bank holiday and was very busy.

I was nervous about the queues, especially flying out without my husband and an impatient toddler but all was fine.

If you choose not to go, then that’s your choice, you can’t blame it on anything else.

JillyComeLately · 31/05/2026 01:22

I am just back from Lanzarote, flying with easy jet, Lanzarote was supposedly one of the worst airports for queues and delays.
This was not the case for us.
Going out from Manchester, it didn't take much longer than usual. The only hold up was because my fingerprints wouldn't register, but it was soon sorted.
Coming home, once the border control opened, quick and easy.

Brooklyn70 · 31/05/2026 01:25

i flew from rome ciampino yesterday

they have self service bag check in and we were allowed to check in 3.5 hours prior to flight

we were allowed to go into the terminal 3 hours before the flight

ciampino is a small airport and there was no queue foe the EES last step before the gate

the last step might be a bit busier in milan. but i would be surprised of the other times were different in milan.

anyway, i’m sure things will be better over the summer, even portugal, notorious for their delays, have added machines and personnel to speed things through.

Brooklyn70 · 31/05/2026 01:32

by the way, the EES process is identical to the EU citizens ( i am one, my husband is british), the only difference is that i had to stand and take a picture, whereas my husband had to do fingerprints too, but that added just 10 seconds.

also, families with children went through the manned desk, so that eliminates a lot of people from the other queue.

I connected in CDG and I was super worried as, though I had almost three hours, I had been booked on separate tickets and, thus, I wasn't protected (though with only carry-on luggage, I could still stay airside). It took me about 90 seconds to go through passport control, using the egates. And another 90 seconds for security (maybe 2 minutes there).

Leaving from Paris (not a connection) it was slower as the priority lines weren't using egates (but you couldn't see this until you were committed to those lines) but still less than 10 minutes (probably more like five minutes). Security, again, slower but still maybe 10-15 minutes.

I want to go. I’m heartbroken that I’m going to have to cancel, but I guess that’s what spineless Starmer gets you. He’s more bothered by the football than getting us closer to Europe and sorting this mess out.

You’re being overdramatic. We flew from Southend to Alicante. 45 mins through the airport.

Alicante to fly back, over an hour to spare!

Book from smaller airports, just take cabin luggage.

idontwanttogoanymore · 30/05/2026 22:37

Milan. One of the worst affected airports.

So don't put anything in your suitcase that you could not manage without if necessary. They do have shops in Milan you know.

Topseyt123 · 31/05/2026 01:55

I don't think I have ever read anything so totally ridiculous on here for a very long time.

You don't want to listen to reason and are determined to blame everything and everyone else. Particularly Keir Starmer.

What are you expecting? Would you like Keir Starmer to personally meet you at the airport and escort you through to the gate and onto your flight?

There's no good reason to cancel your holiday. However, you are are not listening to the measured advice that anyone has given you and are utterly convinced that you need to cancel. So just crack on and cancel, regret it big time and then never book to go away anywhere ever again!

None of this has anything to do with Brexit (I also voted remain), nor with Keir Starmer supporting Arsenal. Linking those to your perceived travel drama is quite a stretch, not to mention utterly spurious.

You need to stop this nonsense.

Nottslady · 31/05/2026 01:59

I flew through Milan this week with several friends, into malpensa on Friday 22nd and back out of bergamo to Stansted today, Saturday 30th at 5pm. Both ways it was very smooth, quick and no delays at all, lots of staff available to help if needed. Ryanair both ways.

idontwanttogoanymore · 30/05/2026 22:32

It’s official EU advice. It’s just been on sky news.

The news catastrophise everything. For views. Same as internet does

Jane143 · 31/05/2026 02:09

You’re being ridiculous

HoppingPavlova · 31/05/2026 02:09

OP, had it not struck you that the planes are not flying around empty due to this with everyone missing flights. That just isn’t happening. And that you are having a severe overreaction?

Lifesd · 31/05/2026 02:26

You are being ludicrous this really isn’t the problem you think it is.

adamduritzvocalchords · 31/05/2026 03:08

I flew to Venice 2 weeks ago. It took me 2 hours nearly to get through when we landed. My DD went through the electronic gate fine and had to just sit and wait. It was a pain but not the end of the world. Coming back it was much quicker

suburberphobe · 31/05/2026 03:10

Sorry you feel this way OP.

Reminds me of that brilliant book "Feel the fear and
do it anyway".

Push through your fear, I'm sure you will love it once you're there.

mindutopia · 31/05/2026 04:41

I’ve done it twice, with children. Completely fine. Not to Norway, to Spain. No delays of any sort. Went from plane to in the taxi heading to the hotel in 15 minutes. Most recent time, it was the most efficient boarding experience I’ve ever had. Not like the 1 hour queues at passport control that I’ve had under the old system. I don’t travel with checked bags though. That’s always a nightmare. I travelled Ryanair both times.

whatsit84 · 31/05/2026 04:48

Think rationally OP - is Ryanair flying empty planes because everyone is stuck in the airport? As an aside it’s ridiculous though, waited two hours at Rotterdam port last week with whole families getting everyone out of the car for fingerprints!
