Allow a play date where mum unapologetically supports children’s education tax

Just this really, our local independent prep school closed due to the education tax earlier this year and has caused absolute chaos for lots of families, including my own. My dd (6) has been invited for a play date with a girl she seems very friendly with and who seems very sweet, but I’ve since found out from another parent that the mum is an ‘unapologetic education taxer’. My instinct is to cancel the play date, AIBU?

I think you’ve worded it a bit strongly, but obviously people who support taxing children’s education would indicate quite a lot about their world view.

Now we know for sure you’re a male journalism undergraduate on a summer job placement. And, as you say “obviously”…

Thanks for playing

Wow 10 minutes in and the comments have convinced me that my first instinct was right ! I will reject the play date, I see protecting children from toxic people who hold immoral views as part of my job as a parent.

Protecting your child from toxic people with immoral views? In that case when will you be putting your Daughter up for adoption? If the process will be a long one she can come and stay with me in the interim. The sooner we get her back around normal people the better. Hopefully it's not too late.

Income tax is paid on income, the clue is in the name. You are confused. You don’t pay tax on your private healthcare. The tax is on education and vocation training of children, again you are confused, it is an education tax
www.gov.uk/guidance/vat-on-education-and-vocational-training-notice-70130

It’s actually a tax charged on a service being provided by a business.

The schools didn’t have to increase their fees - they could have charged the same to parents and said it included the vat. They wouldn’t make as much money - so they decided to pass it on to the parents.

I'm begging you op, please do elaborate on this. I'm keen to understand what world view you believe such a person may have?

FudgeFudy · 30/05/2026 12:40

You're doing the right thing OP - if your child goes on this play date they'll probably catch nits or rickets or tuberculosis or some other disease of the lower orders. Even if they don't they'll come back with a skag habit and singing The Red Flag. You can't be too careful with state educated people, they're all scum.

Maddy70 · 30/05/2026 12:41

I support the tax too and my children went to independent schools. I also have friends with very different views to me. As I'm not a 5 year old child I understand others have different views and we are friends still

I wonder if she ever got that horse "scupture" back that used to live in her extension...

Do let us know, OP! 😂

Or if she’s found any more of her used condoms down the back of her sofa? 😂😂

Like some others on the thread I fully support VAT on private school fees . Tell me what my world view is.

KimTheresPeopleThatAreDying · 30/05/2026 12:42

You jumped the shark with your alcohol and smoking comment OP.

I wish I could like- how great to find someone else in the same position over this travesty. Maybe you also share my thoughts on the repeal of the Corn Laws?

Let's arrange a play debate date and settle it once and for all! Of course, if we disagree our children will never be allowed to associate with one another again, one of us will have to move to another country. But, if we agree, we can promise to marry the familiy fortunes (My property comes with access to a wealth of on street parking donchaknow). So, big stakes here.

WhatAMarvelousTune · 30/05/2026 12:38

Obviously someone’s views on various taxes can suggest a lot about their politics.

Not about their alcohol consumption though (unless you find out they are pro removing all tax on alcohol or something).

Sure, you’re right but somebody supporting children’s education tax would suggest a particular personality type. Can we agree on that?

And what “world view” do you think this would be? Equality and fairness? You’re right, utterly disgusting.
your comment about alcohol, smoking and abuse just revealed you to be rather ridiculous. You sound like you’ve had too much time in the sun poor love. Go lie down.

Equality and fairness? Taxing children’s education? Make it make sense

It's a tax on private schools which is a business, if you choose to pay for your child to attend a business to go to school then you have to pay end of. There are plenty of free schools that your child can go to. Also I do pay tax on my private healthcare, the premium amount is added to my taxable income. I am not confused thank you.

Go on OP, tell us what it tells you.

While you’re at it please explain how this play date will harm your child? What exactly are you protecting your child from by cancelling the play date?

No matter how many times you repeat it , it still isn’t taxing children’s education.

Denim4ever · 30/05/2026 12:48

We were private school parents for a while and I came out thinking the whole sector needs more regulation. Just taxing for VAT isn't the answer because it doesn't target the lack of accountability. Many schools are providing a great education, but if you've ever been unfortunate to be at one that sets themselves up as a law unto themselves you will - as I do - want more regulation

Arlingtonchase · 30/05/2026 12:49

Do you plan to send out a questionnaire to the parents of all DD's potential friends, to check that they have the same views as you on all topics?

DoughnutDreamer · 30/05/2026 12:49

What is it with all these stupid threads that keep being started with some ridiculous situation which essentially boils down to “Should I reject this person because they have a different opinion to me?”? Newsflash…we don’t all have to agree on everything. Life is more interesting when we don’t exist in an echo chamber.

GoodkneeBadKnee · 30/05/2026 12:49

GigglyOrange · 30/05/2026 12:23

Well exactly, also I would imagine that alcohol abuse/smoking would be likely in the home.

🤣

Wow! You need to get out more. The bubble you live in is clearly impacting your ability to think rationally. 🙄
