Allow a play date where mum unapologetically supports children’s education tax

GigglyOrange · 30/05/2026 11:16

Just this really, our local independent prep school closed due to the education tax earlier this year and has caused absolute chaos for lots of families, including my own. My dd (6) has been invited for a play date with a girl she seems very friendly with and who seems very sweet, but I’ve since found out from another parent that the mum is an ‘unapologetic education taxer’. My instinct is to cancel the play date, AIBU?

Well exactly, also I would imagine that alcohol abuse/smoking would be likely in the home.

And right over the shark we go 😂

You've jumped the shark now. Unless you are genuinely such a clueless snobby arsehole that you genuinely believe that people who aren't in favour of private education are all uneducated, degenerate plebs.

It's the standard wind-up merchant who is far less clever than they think they are.

AMurderofMurderingCrows · 30/05/2026 12:30

Quite right OP, keep your child away from the scum. They probably voted Greens in the last elections and you're not wanting that to rub off onto your six year old. I bet the other little girl doesn't even have a pony...

I know - the two laws are nothing alike are they? 20mph limit literally saves lives, mainly children's, while the VAT on fee-paying schools goes some way to levelling the playing field for children in this country. I know which way my morals lie.

Not the point of the thread, and I do think OP is being ridiculous not doing a playdates because a mum has different views, but how exactly has this policy levelled up education? I voted for labour due to their apparent commitment to improving education (although I don't agree with the vat on school fees) and funded before school clubs, neither if which have materialised.

State education funding has in real terms reduced since this policy came in, rather than increased, with cuts to SEN which have placed greater strain on mainstream school budgets who are now funding the support children need via their main budget as EHCP'S are taking so much longer.

If anything it feels like the gap has widened, with a more select group now being able to afford private education, fewer bursaries being available, and at the other end state schools struggling more than ever

I get what you’re saying, but this is children’s education tax we’re talking about. I thinks it’s clear what type of person would support it and isn’t it our job has parents or as a society to try and shield children from those types of people?

I disagree. I know many that agree with the tax as they have no idea how hard it hits some people.

And regardless, it is so wrong to make decisions based on second hand information.

Go to the play date and perhaps you can educate her on the other point of view and maybe she can explain her view point to you?

But you are 100% wrong to ban your daughter from playing with someone just because they have different believes. What do you think your daughter will earn from that?!?

soddingspiderseason · 30/05/2026 12:32

“Education tax”. Also known as paying VAT on non essential luxury items.

If this is even true, grow the fuck up.

Also, if you want to start a thread, get your facts right. It is NOT 'education tax' for God's sake.

FarmGirl78 · 30/05/2026 12:33

This reminds me of that Catherine Tate sketch where the usual Nanny is ill, and they get one "from the North". 🤣 The absolute horror!

This has to be a joke thread, right? Surely no one actually equates being pro VAT on private schools with being an abusive alcoholic?

It must be, I'm against the tax but OP's comments are so extreme that I can't believe this isn't just a joke thread/a bored person on a wind up.

BiteSizedLife · 30/05/2026 12:33

Oh, everyone I know in favour of VAT on private school fees runs a dogfighting ring out of their wraparound kitchen extension, and a crack den in their garden room. Their children (and play date friends) are regularly horsewhipped and locked in the basement cinema room.

Perhaps it’s just the circles I mix with, but OP can’t be too careful.

You’re clearly on a wind up, even if you fervently disagree with VAT on private schools you can’t actually think that anyone who agrees with it must be an alcoholic.

I think you’ve worded it a bit strongly, but obviously people who support taxing children’s education would indicate quite a lot about their world view.

Any policy change such as this will take years, perhaps decades, to show any change. Positive or negative.

That may be, but I agree with the poster who said they would like to see all fee-paying schools closed. Put simply, the fewer children who are in these schools the more level the playing field in my opinion.

A funny thing is, in films about posh boarding schools in the 50s and 60s, they were often shown as quite spartan. Now, from what I have heard, private boarding schools are very comfortable, as described in Malory Towers. There’s also this line in the 1985 film Clockwise:

”We’re hoping the new solarium will give our sixth form a bit more appeal at the top end of the market.”

Malory Towers was spartan. They talk about the bedrooms being plain, iced water in the sinks in the morning, rows of neat, plain beds. The only luxury was the swimming pool.

Obviously someone’s views on various taxes can suggest a lot about their politics.

Not about their alcohol consumption though (unless you find out they are pro removing all tax on alcohol or something).
