Allow a play date where mum unapologetically supports children’s education tax

GigglyOrange · 30/05/2026 11:16

Just this really, our local independent prep school closed due to the education tax earlier this year and has caused absolute chaos for lots of families, including my own. My dd (6) has been invited for a play date with a girl she seems very friendly with and who seems very sweet, but I’ve since found out from another parent that the mum is an ‘unapologetic education taxer’. My instinct is to cancel the play date, AIBU?

There are no accusations, only assumptions.

You know what you said and what you're being asked to substantiate.

Wow, bit of a rant. I’m just pointing out that we don’t all pay in, in fact most people do not now…they seem to be the keenest on everyone else paying more tax though and paying tax on children’s education was beyond the pale,

I have paid in for nearly 40 years - I don’t know who these people are who don’t pay tax. But we all pay tax for education whether or not we have children.

The fact that you seem to think it’s unfair when you don’t have to pay for your children to be educated is crazy. why shouldn’t optional costs be subject to VAT?

GigglyOrange · 30/05/2026 18:33

SingleSexSpacesInSchools · 30/05/2026 18:30

it's not the point. That you would stop your child having a playdate with someone because you have a difference of opinion about a tax issue is insane

that you are taking the other persons opinions somehow personally is also mad. The tax thing affected you personally. Her opinion does and did not.

Filtering your Childs playmates by their parents opinion on almost anything is mad beyond health and safeguarding, this is mad.

It’s not insane, this woman has seen the impact up close and still mouthing off about it. It’s not an ordinary ‘tax issue’ , it’s not a 1p tax on Jaffa cakes. It’s a tax on children’s education, would you genuinely trust a woman like that ?

Yes, I would trust a woman like that. You sound very narrow-minded. I feel very sorry for your daughter that you are so wedded to one point of view that you think people holding other points of view are untrustworthy. It’s actually very sad.

Same could be asked as to whether you would trust a woman that firmly believes her child is entitled to more than anyone else, despite financial limitations, and anyone that send their children to state schools must have alcohol and drug issues.

I know who I’d rather my DC were around (it’s not you).

MintSnail · 30/05/2026 18:36

It was not a tax loophole they needed a new Act of Parliament to make this happen. It's not just about the 30k kids who have had to change schools in the last 2 years since the new tax was introduced, 100s of jobs have been lost, dinner ladies, cleaners, teachers, the impact on the local communities where some of the 200 schools that have closed is huge. We are the only country in the world taxing kids education and I appreciate it's the tip of the iceberg for overtaxing people but none of this money has gone onto education, in Scotland it's only taken 2 years but the policy is now costing the tax payer... It's generated nothing and reduced choice most people like a bit of choice and they support local jobs.

You MUST be trolling now 😥

Yes I would trust them.

A quite large majority of people in the UK support the 2 child benefit cap

A large majority support higher tuition fees

(whisper it) but Reform of all people are topping the UK polls.

How much vetting are you going to do of - and it's so important it bares repeating - the PARENT of a playdate?!?!?!

And now you don't have to. Because you're using the education system provided by the state you help fund. Congratulations.

The "mouthing off" is something you heard from another parent. You haven't even heard it yourself.

TransportNerd · 30/05/2026 18:38

GigglyOrange · 30/05/2026 12:36

I think you’ve worded it a bit strongly, but obviously people who support taxing children’s education would indicate quite a lot about their world view.

If you don't agree with paying tax on education, send your kids to a state school like 93% of us do.

Private schools are - shock, horror - profit-making businesses selling a luxury product. They don't care about your kids' wellbeing or success, all they care about is your money.

I work in a school, we’ve had more leave to go private then we’ve had come in.

I think you’re looking at a small and immediate picture rather than anything longer term

45% of working age people are tax recipients. A lot of people pay £12k a year tax and think they are contributors.

Do you think tax should be a flat monetary value rather than a percentage?

Can you talk me through the highlights of how a 20% tax on education is beneficial long term?
