OP posts:

I bet lots of people on here could make one small roast chicken feed a family of 4 for a week too!🤣

SparklyGlitterballs · Yesterday 06:25

My DD is 25 and she is the same. She did live away for a year but is back home after her relationship ended. She has also lost weight so some of the stored stuff doesn't fit her any more. She has bags in a storage unit (along with other household items from her flat) and several large bags in our garage. Her wardrobe is overflowing. She is addicted to buying clothes and she thinks she must always have a new outfit when she goes out. I get told "I need to go through it and put stuff on Vinted" but nothing actually gets done. I've given her a deadline of end of September to do something otherwise I'll take it all to a charity shop because I'm fed up with it.

Why are you shocked OP?

She’s in temporary housing so doesn’t have much choice on the size of room unfortunately. The room has no drawers or wardrobe just a very tiny rail attached to a wall

In that case it makes sense. Ime storage units are ridiculously expensive tho!

PrincessHedgehog · Yesterday 06:45

how about you myob as you aren’t paying for it? I’m sure you make lifestyle decisions she considers pointless too.

Sooooo...why the surprise? Did she not feel she could come to you to support her? Store some clothes, have somewhere to live? Or are you not close (geographically or emotionally)?

Seems an odd thing to focus on, given the rest of the situation.

But if this is all she has then it is not that shocking she needs to put clothes on storage. Can you fit all of your clothes in a very tiny rail?

ChalkOutlines · Yesterday 07:25

She has so many clothes… that they don’t fit on a tiny rail?

Most people do.

Sartre · Yesterday 07:31

Sounds like an addiction. There’s absolutely no way anyone can wear that many clothes and unless the storage unit is next door, she’s unlikely to be collecting her outfits from there regularly.

Dolphinnoises · Yesterday 07:51

Is the cost of the room and the unit still less than the cost of renting a small flat? It wouldn’t have been when I lived in London but things are crazy these days so I just don’t know…

Dolphinnoises · Yesterday 07:53

Also when I lived in HMOs I had a lot of stuff still in my parents’ loft - until I bought my own place at 31. Does she have access to something like that? If not another reason to have one…

Then why are you shocked? Can't you help her with storage at all?
@CoffeeAndCats3 it's usual to put things in storage if you are in temporary housing. In previous generations, a room in a house meant a decent sized room.

No one can possibly wear more clothes than fits on a tiny rail in temporary accommodation? I can.
I have a large double wardrobe and a large set of (5) drawers. I rotate my clothes by season, with the stuff I’m not wearing that season going in the loft for storage. No different to using a storage facility, if you don’t have a loft.
I wear all of my clothes.

Could all your clothes including all seasons and winter coats fit into one wardrobe?

Yes, very easily.

Notsosweetcaroline · Yesterday 08:01

Your post is actually quite unkind. Your daughter is in temporary accommodation and doesn’t have room to store her things where she’s living. You seem more shocked that her clothes can’t fit on one rail than concerned that she doesn’t have secure accommodation that allows her to have access to basics like her clothes.

I also was thinking this it’s very unkind and very judgemental, and the op left out the key detail, making it look like her daughter was just some spend thrift over indulging in clothes,

thats her child, it’s really dismaying,

Duvetdayneeded · Yesterday 08:01

Why doesn’t she save her money for better accommodation? She’s clearly got issues.

At least £500 a month cheaper, if you can even get together the few £ thousand needed to rent these days and are accepted. Have a look on zoopla. I played 'guess how much' with my sister the other day, because she just doesn't understand renting these days. My DD viewed fifteen properties before she was accepted to rent. Then it was £500 down while the checks were going through, then around £3k all in, to move in.

What do you wear over summer? Or do you buy fast fashion? Do you only have two bags at a time? Two pairs of shoes? How does it work? Everything you own could fit in one small room?

HoraceCope · Yesterday 08:15

she is in temporary housing and you come to post about this?
your are unkind @Lookatyougo7

Iwannaeatapasty · Yesterday 08:25

My mil is like this.

She doesn’t have a storage unit, but she always had the 4th bedroom as a clothes room. When dh and his sister moved out, she took over thier old bedroom too (all are large double rooms).

Each room is filled with racks of clothes and shoes and looks like a small branch of next.

I am the opposite, I have hardly any clothes, I live in the same couple of pairs of leggings and t shirts until they start to fall apart then I replace them with the same.

I don’t care about clothes at all, my MIL loves them. We are all different.

ClarasSisters · Yesterday 08:26

You're shocked that someone living in one room needs extra space to store their stuff? Really?

Why is this so weird? Some people don’t care about clothes.

I’ve only got two pairs of shoes. One old pair of trainers for walking the dog, and one nicer pair, but I don’t do anything bar the school run and then straight out to walk the dog so I just wear the old ones mostly.

If I ever go out, it just tends to be to a pub so I don’t have to ever be smart smart.

I wore the same thing when it was 30
degrees that I would wear when it’s freezing. A t shirt and a pair of leggings. I just didn’t wear a jumper like I would if it was cold.

I don’t have summer clothes and winter clothes, I have a pair of shorts for if we go to the beach on holiday. I don’t have the money to be buying clothes and they have never been my thing anyway.

Can you fit all your clothes on a small rail? No wardrobe, no chests of drawers? No? Sounds like you also have a shopping addiction.

How exactly is your MIL in a 4 bedroom house the same as OP’s DD in a room in an HMO with only a tiny rail for clothes storage?

What are you on about, how is that remotely similar to this young woman in temp housing with one rail,
