Has so much clothing she now has storage unit

That is a lot. Unless she lives in a bedsit and isn't allowed to store stuff at yours.

If she can afford the unit and clothes make her happy then it's up to her really. But I'd be looking for a bigger property and put the money into that rather than renting a unit if possible.

If they no longer fit then you could offer to help her go through them and either sell or give to charity the ones she knows she'll never wear again? If she is complaining of having too much.

But don't push her as they are her possessions to do as she wants with them. I wish my mum had kept all her old clothes for me to wear!

LondonTipton99 · 30/05/2026 17:02

Literally. All that Money wasted on the storage 😐she’ll never see anything from that.

Some people just like material things I guess, rather than actual security.

VaultandSinagain · 30/05/2026 17:15

depends how much clothes space she has in her shared hmo. I have a triple wardrobe with double row of hanging space, plus a large chest of drawers. I don’t think that’s excessive. That’s only just enough space for clothes. It does not include shoes, which are under the bed.

Yellowpapersun · 30/05/2026 17:21

I have an elderly family member who lives alone in a two bed flat. Both bedrooms have Sharps fitted wardrobes stuffed full of clothes. Her garage has several suitcases full of clothes in it. I was helping her swap her winter and summer clothes over and she had 6 identical white jackets, amongst other things. I really suspect she is addicted to buying clothes. I seldom see her in the same outfit twice.

TotalBaloney · 30/05/2026 17:21

I wouldn’t be able to keep all of my clothes in one wardrobe in a room in an HMO and I don’t actually think I own that many clothes! I’ve just bagged my winter stuff up to go in the loft, so I guess thats similar to having a storage unit 🤷🏻‍♀️

TheLilacFinch · 30/05/2026 17:27

I don’t consider myself to have a lot of clothes but the wardrobe in my second bedroom contains my “overflow”, that’s on top of downstairs cupboard for daily shoes/coats and airing cupboard for towels and bed linen. So I would probably make use of a storage unit too if I had to live in an HMO!

Storage units aren’t hugely expensive so it’s not like you’d get a much better flat for the money.

Willowskyblue · 30/05/2026 17:35

I hope it’s good designer clothing she’s storing, as the cost of storage is not small and makes each item of clothing if not designer more expensive each day it’s in there.

youalright · 30/05/2026 17:42

But is it just full of clothes or is it overspill and other stuff them rooms are tiny and I assume she owns more then just clothes

PeloMom · 30/05/2026 17:52

It’s quite possible she can’t fit everything in a room ( we don’t know the size or the size of her available for clothes space) and it’s reasonable to do a seasonal swap. There are very small, very large and anything in between storage units - we don’t know how big it is. Many people say they put their stuff in a loft but she doesn’t have one🤷🏻‍♀️

Somersetbaker · 30/05/2026 20:37

If she's happy and can afford it let her be. Provided it's not all Shein tat. In 20 years time she may be sat on a gold mine of retro fashion. It also depends how big the storage unit is, a 40ft shipping container might be a bit excessive.

Lookatyougo7 · Yesterday 00:04

She’s in temporary housing so doesn’t have much choice on the size of room unfortunately. The room has no drawers or wardrobe just a very tiny rail attached to a wall

Then you shouldn’t be shocked, surely?

Well that’s one hell of a drip feed…

Brokentoes85 · Yesterday 02:12

When my mum moved house and we were helping her, she had 38 bin bags of jeans. Just jeans! I gave up in the end as she wasn't letting anything go.

Lavenderandbrown · Yesterday 02:36

I’ve seen this on Instagram. Having racks or large hanging clothes moving boxes in a unit to keep out of season clothes or special occasion. It’s a way to be organized and take care of clothes not currently in rotation but most storage units get very hot or very cold unless hers is inside a building

TealSapphire · Yesterday 02:53

This is mumsnet of course here you're not unreasonable to be shocked. There will be posters along shortly to detail their one pair of pants, one skirt etc and be in complete agreeance with you.

It's her life and her money 🤷‍♀️ Some people may value a large house, a certain car, or collecting other things. Your daughter may get joy from her clothes collection. So what?!

Could all your clothes including all seasons and winter coats fit into one wardrobe?

Easily! I share a wardrobe and a chest of drawers with DH. Though coat is downstairs.

Mymanyellow · Yesterday 04:43

Hell of a drip feed.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · Yesterday 05:00

That totally changes things. If she doesn’t have a wardrobe or doors then it doesn’t sound like she has an excessive amount for it to not fit.

CoffeeAndCats3 · Yesterday 05:17

Theres something ironic about our consumer driven society that she is paying for space for clothes, but only renting a room in an HMO for herself.

HoraceCope · Yesterday 05:21

does she have future plans op?
sell her clothes?
move?

That's quite a big detail that we didn't get in the first post!

I couldn't fit all my clothes on one tiny rail.

Then why are you surprised she has storage, what else do you expect her to do with her stuff?

Jellycatspyjamas · Yesterday 06:18

Your post is actually quite unkind. Your daughter is in temporary accommodation and doesn’t have room to store her things where she’s living. You seem more shocked that her clothes can’t fit on one rail than concerned that she doesn’t have secure accommodation that allows her to have access to basics like her clothes.
