Does food have this effect on everyone? Or only people with issues

Made shwarma with all the trimmings today for dinner. Including homemade flatbread. Really put the effort in. Asked dh to buy avocado on the way home as I am currently on keto and will only have the chicken with salad and guacamole.

dh came home empty handed. Said the corner shop were out. He walked past a coop and express on his way home from the st. Not to mention being at London Victoria when I sent the text. It really put me in a bad mood as that meant I only had chicken with rocket for my supper. The guac dressing really makes the dish for me.

I plated up for the kids but just didn’t want any in the end. I was so pissed.

Ended up taking myself to McDonald’s. Ate in the car. The meal literally turned my mood around. Like an off switch to the anger. I was thinking literally nothing else can do this for me. Not even a glass of wine.

can food turn everyone’s mood around or only people with food issues/addictions. I wouldn’t necessarily say im addicted but I certainly lean on it when down in the dumps.

i would have to buy my own avocado
i wouldnt trust dh to chose correctly

Ponderingwindow · 27/05/2026 05:15

I’m autistic and for me that comes with food issues. If I am expecting to eat something and it doesn’t materialize as planned, sometimes I get upset. Sometimes my stomach just shuts down. Occasionally I dry heave. It can be nearly impossible to pivot to a plan b because I am hungry but all food sounds disgusting.

I'm sorry but I think keto is made up bollocks so I think you should just have eaten the food you cooked and avoided the drama

stupidest comment I’ve ever seen on here. Keto is fantastic for losing weight and being healthy. There are no essential carbs. Every single carb turns to sugar in your body. No one needs them

THisbackwithavengeance · 27/05/2026 05:31

So you made lovely food from scratch.

But then you threw a hissy fit when your DH didn’t get one ingredient - avocado.

And then pass-agg refused to eat the nice food you had cooked and left the house in a sulk.

And then blew your keto diet by eating McDonalds?

Why on earth didn’t you eat the meat with the salad and add mayonnaisr, Greek yogurt or garlic dressing? All fine on keto.

You need to get a grip on your temper and sulking before your DH divorces you tbh.

TubbyNugget · 27/05/2026 05:39

Hi OP, I don't know 100% what you're asking but it sounds like you're asking if emotional eating is something we all struggle with or use as a coping mechanism.

I know I do. Yesterday, I was so stressed about a meeting I have coming up today and from all of the social activity I had over the past weekend, that I binged on ice cream and yoghurt. It made me feel better for a second. Today, not so much.

So, if that was your question, I guess I can say that some share what you're experiencing but I wouldn't suggest that all do without knowing what all have to say!

Hope you feel better today.

garlictwist · 27/05/2026 05:40

Not necessarily the same, but I find the hungrier I am, the more important it is that the food be exactly right which is weird because you'd think it would be the other way round.

Ladyfromthehill · 27/05/2026 05:45

DoAWheelie · 26/05/2026 21:33

I would feel the same but it's not the food that ruined my mood, it would be the lack of care shown by someone who is supposed to love and support me. The food becomes a representation of that so you find yourself rejecting it.

If my OH had done the same, as soon as he realised it was meant to be the main component of my food he would have shot back out the house to the shops and also come back with a nice treat for after dinner (and made sure it was suitable for my current diet).

Ok so get sh was at Victoria ring to catch a train and got the text. Was he meant to get off the train/ go back on himself to grab an avocado? I'm always pissed off when I am about to leave the shop and dh texts me to get an item he forgot and expects me to go and buy whatever. Op could have got the avocado herself knowing what she was making.

keepswimming38 · 27/05/2026 05:47

I think you need to step away from the diet. It’s made you a bit cray cray.

Dazedandconfused28 · 27/05/2026 05:48

Yes - I get irrationally irritable if I don't get the food I am expecting.

As an example- checked out a restaurant recently & identified on the menu something I really wanted. Went to restaurant & they had sold out of that dish. I really didn't fancy much else - and just ended up having the bread. It totally ruined my day! I absolutely know it's ridiculous, but for some reason I always have a disproportionate reaction in these situations.

Jumpingjoys · 27/05/2026 06:26

Well yabu. You could have driven to the shop, bought an avocado and eeaten your lovely meal. Or you could have eaten your good without it.
I would have been annoyed at DH too, but thats not the point.

Every single world cuisine is based on carbs as a key component. Humans have always eaten them. Plus they are really delicious! Keto is a fad like an the other ridiculous social media type diets.

Moretan · 26/05/2026 21:28

I’m on keto. I have a health condition which means I avoid carbs.

What did you eat in McDonalds ?

Meadowfinch · 27/05/2026 07:37

I've never considered myself to have issues with food. I'm in my 60s and a consistent size 10, although I enjoy my food.

If that was me, I'd have added something else to the dish, and adapted. I wouldn't have gone out for food, and I never want McDs. It wouldn't be more than a minor irritation.

Oh my god that sound cuckoo.

muddyford · 27/05/2026 07:49

If you were pissed, why did you drive?

TheBlueKoala · 27/05/2026 07:51

@Moretan Did you stress the importance of the avocado to your dh? If you said "Please get me avocados or my dinner will be ruined" that's one thing. If you just asked him to get avocados and corner shop was out YABVU. You are restricting your diet and I think it's making you anxious and not very nice to be around.

Did the McDonalds not have carbs?

lljkk · 27/05/2026 07:56

That sounds like archetypal binge behaviour described in stories told in Overeaters Anonymous meetings. Stuffing down uncomfortable feelings with food. People who go to OA would consider it obvious eating disorder behaviour.

PartyQuestion30th · 27/05/2026 08:00

I have on occasion, like 2 or 3 times a year, done similar out of hanger. I distinctly remember on holiday once, we’d mistimed the driving and both rolled up incredibly hangry at a truck stop in the states. I sat on the table having a perfectly rational (to me) discussion with another lady 8nna similar state of hunger, about how we were going to leave our husbands immediately as they were so unreasonable. One rather tasty Mexican meal later, it was all grand.

i manage it better now, brown carbs, more protein, more fibre, less sugar, I don’t get the sugar dips. My husband still gets hangry, he’s well known for it….

Toooldtocare25 · 27/05/2026 08:26

Absolutely if I have something in my head about food and I don’t get it . I am completely unreasonable. And it can take hours to come back from. 🤣 I also get hangry but that’s not what this is.

hcee19 · 28/05/2026 08:39

Well done. Keep it up.👏

BCBird · 28/05/2026 08:43

I had an.ex boyfriend like this. I love my food, I am overweight because of this, but he almost went into a trance when he was eating. He later started keto and lost a significant amount of weight. My guess is he has got worse. Do you think because you have food that is ' off limits' it's making you have an unhealthy attitude / reaction towards food OP?

limetrees32 · 26/05/2026 21:38

I can be completely inconsolable if denied a fud that I was looking forward to.

Excellent typo. Every Scottish person has had a really good lol at that 🤣 thank you 😁
