Really? She lived with this guy and didn't know? She had a camper van parked on the drive and didn't know he stole the money to buy it?

I don't buy it.

Even if the camper van had been bought for party use, nobody seems to have cared that such an expensive asset wasn't being used.

I'm also confused about the cars.

It's quite difficult to justify buying a car through a company without raising questions about tax. What was supposed to be their purpose? Were they not noticed because the organisation was a political party so less likely to be on HMRC's radar?

It would be interesting to know, although I doubt we ever will in detail, what were the fake receipts and what were just bought with snp funds and assumed ok.

Like does the invoice for the car just say “car for P Murrell” or is it that fake invoice/invoices for seemingly legit expenses were processed for the X amount for the car.

Cares about lining her own pocket more like.

Of course she knew, she was a very intelligent tactical politician and she’ll front it out forever more and put her own spin on it. It’s what she’s good at.

Yes - I don't imagine he was doing the day to day bookkeeping himself, so what was being processed?

God knows but surely the invoice would be from
Motorhomes R US,
I xyz motorhome,
Purchaser SNP

But then its been registered to him personally rather than to SNP.

RealFeminist · Yesterday 16:12

The thing is, though, I reckon that NS has outed herself as a MN reader as it is the most genius excuse ever for getting away with daylight robbery. Park the luxury motor home on your MIL’s drive because everyone here is either NC or low contact with their MIL.

Geoffrey Cox the former Attorney General had high-paying second jobs and failed to declare his stake in a tax avoidance scheme. He also notably voted remotely from a Caribbean tax haven while doing legal work for the British Virgin Iislands

I'm going to disagree on this one - he remained a silk and resumed his private practice after stopping being the AG - whether or not you agree with it that is allowed under the parliamentary rules. He was allowed to continue to vote by proxy - again whether that should be allowed or not it wasn't against the rules. He was in the BVI in his role as a barrister not because he was trying to avoid tax and he put the hours in - it wasn't money for free or embezzelment. I may not agree that MPs should be allowed to continue with their lucrative sidelines whilst sitting in the house but doing so is not corruption.

To be fair if your MIL didn't want a bloody great campervan clogging up her drive then she should've just installed one of the MN exclusive penguin bollards. That nobody ever seems to own outside of MN land.

He chose to steal getting his kicks from buying expensive pencil sharpeners and cruet sets amongst other silly things - what a strange way to get his thrills. It was his way of saying 'fuck you' by spending ridiculous money on every day items.

Very weird man. At least if you are going to steal money, spend it on something exciting!

It"s not exactly Goodfellas is it? 400k nicked over 12 or so years isn"t that much money either, what was the point, their combined income would have been about 350 - 400k a year with probably a lot of food, travel and accommodation picked up by the party or the tax-payer, that is a nice little cash cushion, so WTF was the point of a top end camper van suitable for driving across Australia parked up on a drive in Dunfermline bought with nicked money? And as I said earlier people on 400k household income don"t live on a new-build estate on the outskirts of Glasgow, that so obvious sham makes me more angry than the stolen money (which I don"t really care much about, much larger sums have been pilfered by people in positions of trust at pension funds, corporates etc.)

I find it hilarious that someone on MN (whether on this thread or one of the others on this topic) has suggested that NS wouldn't know about it because the campervan was parked in a different city.

For a start, Scotland isn't that big and a trip to the MIL's wouldn't be as onerous as driving up to the Highlands. Secondly, whilst Dunfermline is a city in name, it's honestly not that big. What constitutes a city in Fife would just be a medium-sized town anywhere else.

Maybe we should crowdfund some penguin bollards for him to protect his prison bunk?

A source close to the investigation told the Scottish Sun that she "sat in silence for hours" leaving cops "frustrated". Another source said: "The brass neck on her is incredible. She gave a no-comment interview and hindered police while saying publicly she was cooperating with them."

Ah, the Daily Express 🤣

My parents live in the next street to The Campervan. It never moved. It became a point of discussion for us on the regular, as my folks also have a campervan (older than the SNP one!)
You rarely saw the MIL either. My folks wouldn’t be much younger than her, either. Very occasionally you knew either Murrell or Sturgeon were visiting, because of the additional police presence, but it was rare.

I was never that much of a fan of her politics but she did strike me as being very competent (at least at first). Salmond I also rated as a great politician.

Then of course in later years it has all gone t*ts up for her.

If I was one of the SNP faithful I would be absolutely furious. How are they going to raise money again after this ?

I think that there will always be a place for the SNP in Scotland as many Scots see it as being the best way of getting a good deal from Westminster. But to vote for them at a referendum after stuff like this ?

They did. For the election in May. They exceeded their target.

Also, you don’t vote for a party during a referendum, you vote on an issue. Like Brexit.

Not being charged is not the same as being cleared of any charges by a long shot. It just means they had insufficient evidence to press charges. And in part that is probably because NS, as was her right, refused to answer any questions put to her by the police, despite saying she'd cooperate fully. Now, in these sorts of cases I am sure saying nothing is the right approach if you want to avoid being charged...

Aye caused that worked well for much of the prison population.

I was correcting the assumption that the people who left the F&A Committee had a clue what they were talking about. They didn't. They werent paid professionals.

Apparently they did know what they were talking about because they correctly identified that there was something wrong with the accounts.

However, Governance of any organisation usually involves appointing people who aren't paid professionals, whether they are trustees of a charity or non executive directors.

Are you really arguing that they should just be ignored because they aren't paid professionals? If so what is the point of appointing them?

They correctly identified there was something wrong with the accounts that they said they didn’t see? How does that work?

Differentforgirls · Yesterday 17:19

nicepotoftea · Yesterday 15:10

Yeah right.

Professional auditors don't suddenly leave their clients in the lurch for no reason.

The SNP had to rush to find different auditors so that they could submit their accounts on time, and then they were only able to submit qualified accounts.

When an accountant suspects that their client is guilty of an offence, it is normal for them to resign. They don't make the reason public because they have a duty of confidentiality.

They did make it public though.

Differentforgirls · Yesterday 17:20

nicepotoftea · Yesterday 15:15

No charges were made because the police didn't have enough evidence to make a criminal prosecution.

The police cannot clear anyone. They can only submit a case to the COPFS.

The police don’t make criminal prosecutions.
