Feeling trapped in the house by the weather

I expect I’m being unreasonable, but the heat makes me so sleepy that I don’t have much get up and go, plus the thought of having to slather myself in sunscreen is a bit of a pain, plus potentially crowds, cars, etc.

Can someone give me a kick up the bum? It’s objectively such a waste of a sunny afternoon to spend it indoors snoozing and scrolling. But I don’t live near a beach or a lake sadly, so realistically I’d be going out to get an ice cream or something.

Not a waste at all. You're mentally decompressing, lowering your blood pressure and heart rate and assisting your body in recovery from daily stress and strain.
All eminently good for you.
Only a mad thing would be out in this heat un-necessarily - and ice cream is just fat and sugar so not good for you.
Stay put and enjoy.

VintageLane · 25/05/2026 14:52

We’re outside but under shade. I would never sit in the sun.

kohlrabislaw · 25/05/2026 14:54

It’s just a few days. I’m just accepting it. Staying cool inside, pottering around doing a few bits. Early morning walks with the dog. It’ll be back to normal in a couple of days.

VanGoSunflowers · 25/05/2026 14:54

No, I feel the same! I have a dog though, don’t want to take him in the car even though it has AC as I’m not convinced he feels the benefit of it in the back, can’t go out and leave him here because I usually shut him in the kitchen and it’s currently 30 degrees in there 😩

MayaLui · 25/05/2026 14:55

The typical way of life for people living in climates like this is to use the early morning and late evening as the times to spend out of doors, so that's what I try to do. I went for a walk before 10am and i might go out for dinner after 6pm, other than that I'll be indoors. You won't find many humans who think 30+ degrees is nice weather for getting out and about and making the most of it!

floatinginacoolpool · 25/05/2026 14:56

Pretty sure this is why Mediterranean people have siestas! We are just shifting around how our days look and all having a siesta in the middle bit of the day

fantam · 25/05/2026 14:57

Not an issue at all. You are just avoiding cancer inducing rays, otherwise you're snoozing and indolent indoors, same as those mad folk outdoors!

I'm sitting inside also looking out at it. The minute I open the door I get waves of heat, so I'm nice and cool indoors. I'll go out to sit for a while about 5 or so when the sun goes off a part of the garden. That's bliss for sure.

Trackstar · 25/05/2026 15:02

I agree just work around it. I'm off work this week and got up early today to walk the mutts and I went for a 10km run. That all done I've just been pottering about pulling weeds in the garden and now I'm relaxing in the shade having a wee drink. When it cools down this evening it'll be dog walk no. 2 but until then I'm happy enough around the house and garden.

My teenager is off at the beach today(I'm in Ireland and she is on her summer holidays already), it's a young person's game in my eyes, give me the bird song of my garden over a busy beach any day.

Peridot1 · 25/05/2026 15:05

I am all for making the most of nice sunny weather but not when it’s this hot. I try to make the most of the cooler mornings and the cooler evenings. Mid day I stay inside. And I love the sunshine and warm weather.

TheFairyCaravan · 25/05/2026 15:06

We’re indoors. Our garden gets full sun so it’s just too hot atm. In fact we’ve just ordered another parasol.

DH went for an early walk along the canal towpath and I read in the garden. We might go back outside in an hour or so but for now we’re watching television and I’m crocheting in front of a fan

WhatNoRaisins · 25/05/2026 15:06

For me there isn't any fun I could go out and seek in this heat so I'm just staying in. I'll take the kids for early morning outings and then accept that there will be more screen time while we're stuck inside.

I’ve got a breathing problem. Sitting inside, coolers (not normal fans) on, is my solution.

Just come out to sit on the shady patch of my back yard. In my heart I want to to head to the coast which is only fifteen mins away but I know the world and his wife will be there, parking will be difficult and it's too hot although it's bloody gorgeous. Will sit here with a cuppa and my book watching the plants grow and the birds and bees doing their thing.

I’m at work, it’s 39.2°c inside, far too hot and we’re all struggling. If I had the option of doing nothing, I’d take it.

Enjoy relaxing OP

Bloody hell, I thought I was doing well walking to the post box early this morning. I thought aww she'll be some 26 year old new mum but no you have teens. 😳.
I need to up my game! On the positive I'm going cold water swimming tomorrow.

WhatcakeshalIbaketoday · 25/05/2026 15:23

I too feel like I’m wasting the day indoors and with the curtains drawn. They’re light curtains, so the daylight isn’t blocked. Don’t want to go out in the heat for the sake of it. Back to work tomorrow and I’m looking forward to spending a 20 minute car journey is my lovely air-conditioned mini.

mounjaroatlast · 25/05/2026 15:33

I am home with blinds down and curtains drawn. It is just too hot outside. I never just sit in the garden, I get bored, and it is too hot to do anything like weeding. The local beaches will be packed and just aren't fun when they are like that.

I have dug out the tower fan and intend to just relax for the rest of the day.

Haha if it makes you feel any better I came back a puddle of my former self! Enjoy your swim tomorrow, I live a 5 min walk away from a gorgeous lake and was eyeing it up this morning on my run. There were so many people out swimming and kayaking and paddling boarding. It always makes me feel so cheery to see people out enjoying nature in the sun.

Imaginary86 · 25/05/2026 15:34

My house feels like an oven. I’m really struggling with the heat

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 25/05/2026 15:38

I love the heat but don’t like the sun. So I’m inside, very warm, very happy, just pottering.

I think we need to realise that just because the weather is hot/sunny/snowy, we don’t have to go out and not waste it, staying indoors doing housework or reading or navel gazing is a perfectly good way to spend a day, everyone needs downtime.

ErlingHaalandsManBun · 25/05/2026 15:44

I was up early this morning, took our two dogs for a short walk before it got too hot. Came back and got a workout in, then sat outside in the shade for 30 minutes with a book and a coffee before anyone else in my house was up.

Have been inside since and will head out again soon to have another read with a coffee and then will walk the dogs again once its gone a bit cooler and we have more shade for them.

Its better to be indoors during the height of the heat and there is plenty you can do outside early and later on when the intensity of the heat is less.

Its just for a short amount of time, before we know it the sodding rain will be back so trying to just get on with it and make the most of the day.

gamerchick · 25/05/2026 15:46

What's wrong with stopping in? I don't get the pressure of having to do something just because the sun is out or it's a bank holiday. I have an active job, my arse is down.

ParadiseIsNoBunker · 25/05/2026 15:47

I got up at 6 and went for a run at 7. It was the perfect temperature. Home at 8 and then had to work 10-2 to fix an issue at the office.

Am now out in the garden in a wafty kaftan, under the trees on a recliner and drinking a glass of ice cold rosè. Can recommend!

PinkyFlamingo · 25/05/2026 15:48

I don't understand people thinking staying in is "wasting" a hot day. I work full time so sitting relaxing in the house is perfect.
