Feeling trapped in the house by the weather

I expect I’m being unreasonable, but the heat makes me so sleepy that I don’t have much get up and go, plus the thought of having to slather myself in sunscreen is a bit of a pain, plus potentially crowds, cars, etc.

Can someone give me a kick up the bum? It’s objectively such a waste of a sunny afternoon to spend it indoors snoozing and scrolling. But I don’t live near a beach or a lake sadly, so realistically I’d be going out to get an ice cream or something.

YANBU at all.

I had to go and check on an elderly person just now and walking through the village everyone has their blinds down, windows closed. Gardens very quiet. I think everyone is indoors.

At 7pm/8pm everyone throws open their windows, doors and even front doors to cool the house off for night time.

Do as you please. I fancied some strawberries but decided I can't be bothered to go out. It relatively cool in my house but I know it's baking outside. I rarely venture out on Bank Holiday- traffic and crowds are enough of a deterrent.

AnnaQuayRules · 25/05/2026 16:02

I went for a swim early, then a dog walk.

I'm currently in the sofa with the curtains closed, watching a movie.

We will probably eat dinner in the garden later, when it's cooler

Bloody hell, I thought I was doing well walking to the post box early this morning. I thought aww she'll be some 26 year old new mum but no you have teens. 😳.
I need to up my game! On the positive I'm going cold water swimming tomorrow.

To be fair if that poster is in Ireland it’s about 24 degrees there. Not the 33 degree weather a lot of the UK is experiencing.

Took the dogs out at 6am, just us and the birds singing. Magical. The rest of the day can fuck right off though. Inside is the only sensible place to be.

Thisistemporary · 25/05/2026 16:22

Don’t feel guilty about staying indoors for a
lot of the day, it’s just not comfortable to be outside unless you are in the shade with your feet in a paddling pool. We went to a splash park with my toddler which was a nice way to cool down but for the rest of today we’re staying inside.

We passed by a park holding a music festival and the idea of standing or dancing for hours under the blazing sun is my idea of hell on earth.

Peterdottir · 25/05/2026 16:44

YANBU but sensible. If you really want to get out go for a walk later when it's cooler?
I'm not a morning person but the last 2 days DH and I have gone out at 7.30am for a walk round our local country park. Was busy with dog walkers mainly and everyone says hello which is lovely.

We sat in the shade in tne garden until 11 but had to come in as felt too hot and have been in since then. I had a nice afternoon nap a bit earlier.

We had an afternoon tea booked for tomorrow for our anniversary which we've changed to Wednesday when it will apparently be 10 degrees cooler.

It takes a minute to apply sunscreen. YABVU

We have watched TV all day in the air-conditioning. It kind of feels like a waste but it’s so beyond comfortable outside. I never sit still normally so actually this is quite a treat.

FinchiePink · 25/05/2026 16:58

I have very fair, freckly skin which is extremely susceptible to burning and statistically puts me at one of the highest risk of skin cancers.

When it's like this I only go out in the early morning or late evening. Staying indoors, especially in the middle of the day, is completely sensible.

The sun can be just as harmful and unpleasant as the cold and the snow. We can take precautions against all of them of course, but only the sun comes with the societal pressure to be out and about.

Nourishinghandcream · 25/05/2026 17:26

In this weather, I only leave the house to top up the birdbaths and late evening to walk the Ddogs (in a lovely wooded area near the house so nice & cool).
House is in lockdown with curtains & blinds firmly closed and doors/windows only opened to take advantage of the cool air at night/early morning.
Inside the house is actually quite pleasant so we don't feel we are missing out as neither of us are sun (or heat) worshipers.

mondaytosunday · 25/05/2026 19:27

Im staying inside and crocheting. It’s not a waste - what would I be doing outside? Walking? Too bloody hot.

SurreySenMum26 · 25/05/2026 19:31

I got up before 7am yesterday to drive to the beach. Early morning or late afternoon is much more sensible.

I love the heat but don’t like the sun. So I’m inside, very warm, very happy, just pottering.

I think we need to realise that just because the weather is hot/sunny/snowy, we don’t have to go out and not waste it, staying indoors doing housework or reading or navel gazing is a perfectly good way to spend a day, everyone needs downtime.

Absolutely! It s extreme weather as is heavy snow or relentless rain. Don’t beat yourself up over not being out there. I spend loads of time outside usually but have recently realised when to give in gracefully and enjoy doing different things.

Yes that's what we do, siesta in the hottest hours and trip to the beach or the pool in the late afternoon/evening.

Also, remember to enjoy the daylight every day that you can, a little vitamin whatever it is little and often rather than attempting to overdose it all on one day.

suki1964 · 25/05/2026 21:32

Ive been sat out in shorts, a vest and a hat , since I finished work at 10am.

Mowed a lawn, pulled some weeds, swept the drive

Changed into linen wide legged trousers and clean top to go get some beers and cider, back into shorts and vest for more garden time

Lit the BBQ, had half hour in the hot tub - which wasnt hot hot - I turned it off yesterday so rather like getting into a warm pool

Cooked dinner, sat eating it outside with a couple of drinks

Now sat wrapped up in a dressing gown after a warm shower and enjoying the relative coolness of the day

Actually - scrub that, its cold, a thick fog has descended

Here in NI we dont get very many hot - ie above 20 days so I lap them up. Beaches are bunged so its the garden watching the farmers bring in the silage

When a Londoner, where there were more then the odd day of sunshine and heat, id often stay inside
