To ask what water bottle you use?

I have to admit im guilty of buying a plastic water bottle, using it to death and then buying another.

but with this heat at the moment and a holiday coming up, I want a genuinely good, portable water bottle that will keep ice cold all day. My idea is to fill it with ice water in the morning and then refill through the day, hopefully with ice still in it.

At home I use a Stanley cup which keeps it cold all day, but is far too big to travel with! I’m thinking 500-750ml, and quite portable? Does anyone have any recommendations?

My only concern is being out and about in Europe, im not sure if they have water taps more common than we do in the UK? I plan to be out everyday from early until quite late and don’t want to get dehydrated or have to spend tons on water each day

Depends on where in Europe you are going - rome has lots of taps where you can fill up water bottles. I think there are websites where you can fine the locations. Otherwise we tend to fill our metal ones in the morning, then but refrigerated plastic ones from a shop and use these to refill the empty metal bottles. As we dont drink bottled water at home, we dont feel too bad doing this for a 7 - 10 day period. If self catering we buy the large bottles of water and keep them in the fridge to fill up.

I have a Stanley ice flow tumbler in the 0.89l size but they do come in smaller. It’s great for out and about and drinks stay icy cold. I’ve not found anything to top the Stanley for keeping drinks cold.

This is the style of my one that I mentioned a few posts ago. Going by the sizes on that link mine will be the 0.59l one.

Small (500ml) flip flow stanley. Travelled all over with it. Never had a bottle keep stuff cold all day at 40 degree heat. Smaller than the standard stanley and has handle.

To be honest I just want to avoid spending €1-2 every few hours, I tend to drink 4 large Stanley cups a day at home!

One of my mates has mentioned an Owala, which looks good

We bought the supersparrow ones. Really like them, the only issue we had is that the carry strap wasn't long enough for my husband so ended up buying another longer strap. We did a 6 mile walk in the shade with them today and they were great.

SquigglePigs · 25/05/2026 17:02

We have some Sho ones and some Super Sparrow ones. All metal and keep drinks cold for hours! I love both types.

We've also got a couple of Ion8 ones and they wear very well but aren't insulated so dont tend to use in summer.

Sho even have a new one called the Newt that you can put fizzy drinks in. I love fizzy water, especially when it's hot so I recently treated myself to one.

Utterlyexhausted · 25/05/2026 17:04

By far Yeti is the best. I have had Stanley, hydroflask & Owalas in the past. Stanleys are the worst and old hydroflasks are very good (new ones not very good quality imo). Owala is good but honestly Yeti are consistently coldest or hottest depending on which you prefer.

500ml is fine. I can’t say we have ever had a problem with refilling water anywhere in Europe. Otherwise it’s so heavy

Are you staying in hotels? Where do you plan to get ice from?

I just use trusty Stanley water bottle. Tap water is cold enough and I will refill on route if long day

I drink a lot everyday which is why I like to carry more! I’m staying in an Airbnb

well yes. But 500ml v750ml isn’t going to make a huge difference in drinking but will in weight. And size in bag.

Surely you will drink lots in the morning before leaving, then take water with you can just refill when out and about. Cafes will usually allow for free, fountains, toilets. When you stop for coffee or lunch also, refill water in cafes.

i don’t know wher your going, but I live southern Europe and most my local towns have water fountains for drinking water and even off road there’s drinking water in many fountains hiking. Every local public toilet also have ‘ drinking water’ labels on taps.

I usually carry a 1l bottle day to day in my handbag, so not worried about that. I’m off to France.

Ion8 best bottle I’ve had … llama 🦙 pattern is fun as well

AliMonkey · 25/05/2026 21:31

I have a Yeti, it's easy to clean, has lasted years, keeps water cool (if it's really hot, I add ice to it and it stays really cold until I fill it up again but doesn't get condensation on outside like some do). They do them in a variety of sizes from I think 500ml to 1.3L.

FedUpandEatingChocolate · 25/05/2026 21:38

I have a chillys which I've had for ages, at least 9 years. It's great at keeping drinks cool and pretty indestructible. It's also easy to clean. Don't bother with the fake ones, We've gone through dozens of those for other members of the family, bloody wish we'd just got the originals for them!

My DD and I also have owalas. They're bigger and heavier so I wouldn't recommend them for holidays. They are really easy to drink from though so great for weather like this

madnessitellyou · 25/05/2026 21:43

I have a Chilly one. They last years. I only buy new when I get bored! I can’t stand how the water smells and tastes after several hours in a plastic bottle.

AllaMova · 25/05/2026 22:36

I have a Chilly’s Series 2. I’ve had it for years and it has never failed me.

Twinklechoc · 25/05/2026 22:37

Metal chillys water bottle - I've had it years and it's still in great condition.

Topbird29 · 25/05/2026 12:11

I have a chilly and my ds both have Sho bottles. All are good and dont leak in the bag, and come in different sizes.
Last year I also found an ice cube tray where you can make long thin ice bits that fit into the the neck of water bottles. Game changer for school! Just google water bottle ice cube tray or similar and some should come up.

Edited

We also have these ice cube trays and I even took them on holiday with us! 🤣

pinkpony88 · 25/05/2026 23:09

I have a couple of chilly bottles and they are really great. I’ve also just got a Ninja one which I love but I would say doesn’t keep the water cold quite as long as the chilly ones.

Nat6999 · 25/05/2026 23:25

I use Super Sparrow or Meoki bottles, both keep ice frozen for at least 12 hours.

Nat6999 · 25/05/2026 23:29

I use mine mainly at night & also put my soda water bottles in the freezer for at least 4 hours before bed so they are semi frozen by bedtime, they stay cold for most of the night, I wrap the bottle in kitchen roll so all the condensation on the outside of the bottle soaks in the paper which helps keep them chilled longer.

curious79 · 25/05/2026 23:30

Owala - love them! Insulated too
And Chilies

I get that this might work for overnight at home, but I want something that’s going to work when out and about in 30 degree weather

I think an owala might be the answer, I know they’re heavy but im going to be carrying a bag with me, with a towel and beach stuff in everyday! So im not too worried
