That it is ridiculous to refer to an 11 & 8 year old as 'babas'

My DSis refers to her kids these ages as 'the babas'. My kids are a similar age and I never refer to them as this. This is the same DSis that allows the 8 year old have a dummy and sees nothing wrong with it 🙄 my DM also refers to them as this 'Oh X said she is calling in later with the babas!' It just gives me a massive ick. AIBU

Oh god yes, that is awful,
You're not unreasonable at all !

Plsudb · 24/05/2026 19:56

It’s fine.

VeganSteakAndFries · 24/05/2026 19:56

Why do you care op. Just crack on.

user293948849167 · 24/05/2026 19:57

It’s just a figure of speech right? Like “the kids”?

Mydogsmellsofwee · 24/05/2026 19:57

I’m live in the Black Country and children are refered to as “the bab” until they are quite old.

My in laws will say, “does the bab want to come to visit” when refering to my 13 year old.

DavesGirl90 · 24/05/2026 19:58

We call our children babies even though only one is anywhere near being a baby. It’s just a silly jokey affectionate thing. You must really hate her to get wound up by it.

Arlanymor · 24/05/2026 19:58

My mum still calls me 'chickie' - I am 47. Is that allowed?

Peterdottir · 24/05/2026 19:58

The babas bit doesn't really bother me but what's going on with an 8 year old having a dummy?!!

Mydogsmellsofwee · 24/05/2026 19:59

I still call my 24 year old son “Bub” as a nickname.

First option sounds a reasonable approach to me in the circumstances.

DisrobeDatrobe · 24/05/2026 19:59

I'm not personally keen on 'baba' even for a baby - also dislike 'babe' and 'baby' as adult endearments, but the world would be dull if we all liked the same thing.

The real question is whether her children are OK with it. At 11, I'd have been having strong words with anyone who called me 'baba' 😄

Bunnybigears · 24/05/2026 20:00

My son is "the bairn" he is 19. Agree the dummy is a problem.

Peterdottir · 24/05/2026 20:00

My Mum refers to me and my sister together as 'the girls'. We are 54 and 52 :-)

I did a whole other thread on this! I think it all feeds into the infantalisation!!

Oh that’s lovely. my two youngest are girls and I call them “the girls”. I shan’t be around when they are in their 50s, but I will always call them that while I am here.

pinenuts75 · 24/05/2026 20:05

My late father used to call me the bairn I was in my mid 40’s, I kind of miss it.

I think thats fine as a localised pet name. This is just ridiculous constantly referring to kids as babies in one way or another and keeping them as such. They use baby talk all day, can I have a 'dinky' instead of drink, din dins instead of dinner. Its just so irritating

My dad used to refer to us as 'the babbies' when we were all at least school age.

Twisterlollies · 24/05/2026 20:08

DD used to call pigs ‘babas’ when she was a toddler. She couldn’t pronounce ‘Peppa’, so it was Baba, then all pigs just became babas. It was so cute!

puppycuddles · 24/05/2026 20:08

It's only an affectionate way of referring to her kids when she's amongst close family, I don't see the problem with that.
