AIBU to think this dinner spread will be enough for nine?

Nine people for dinner tomorrow, 6 adults, 3 kids. It’s going to be really hot. 5 of the guests will have travelled some of the day.

I’ve actually been unwell this week so have relied on M&S to do the actual work. DH isn’t sure my planned spread is going to feed everybody so I’d like some opinions

I have bought:
2 quiches (one bacon and cheese, one cheese and onion)
2 packets hot flaked salmon
Ingredients for big Greek style salad (cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, feta etc)
Big bag of green salad
2 big pots of pasta, pesto and pine nut salad
6 sausage rolls
Big bag of M&S wotsits
Big bag of M&S bacon crisps
Huge double punnet of strawberries
Meringue nests
Cream
oh and cake

The sausage rolls and crisps are for whoever wants them but I obvs had the kids in mind picking those - I know all three kids like these things and eat them.

So that’s it. I think it’s enough. DH suspicious and thinks we might need ‘extras’.

Over to you Mumsnet (don’t worry, I’m braced for criticism and I can take it!)

you can ride the opiate buzz while your husband puts things together

Can two co-codamol really give you an opiate buzz? It does nothing for me except make my knee hurt a bit less.

jinglejanglescarecat · 24/05/2026 21:01

Not the point of the thread at all but that cake sounds amazing!!! Would love a photo and a recipe when you’re feeling better OP!!

I hope it all goes well.

Bababear987 · 24/05/2026 21:01

Is this post even real? I dont see how on any planet you can serve that to 6 adults and think its enough?
There's nothing substantial there its all side bits and sugar

MuddlingThrough1724 · 24/05/2026 20:57

Having bought this exact punnet last week, you need at least 3 for the number of people you have, my toddler finished the pack in 3 meals! You simply don't have enough food to be a generous host. As an adult I don't especially like quiche and don't like potato salad at all. I'd be starving even if I did eat those things! You need way more for everyone but especially the kids. Some pizzas and garlic bread, Baguette and cheese board, a whole bunch more picky bits and crisps, and ice cream/wafers/something to go with the 2 strawberries each that big punnet will allow.

You might not like quiche and potato salad, but presumably OP knows her guests' likes. 🤷‍♀️
I agree on adding more food, though, and apparently OP is going to do that.

Bubblebathbefore8 · 24/05/2026 21:05

Jersey royals with butter and parsley

Bubblebathbefore8 · 24/05/2026 21:05

I love quiche btw

Rpop · 24/05/2026 21:07

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:12

Ok, so maybe I need an extra quiche and maybe some continental meats? Hummus and veg?

Still light! I always do less than husband thinks but I think even your revised amount is too light!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 24/05/2026 20:43

May I have an invite to yours? 😁

Sure! I think overcatering is better than under and it is no bad thing to have leftovers and skip cooking the next day :)

It’s going to be hot. I’d add some crisps ( love them and I’m old) and buy a pack of 10 mini magnums. Other ideas great . Enjoy a nice sunny day

Bjorkdidit · 24/05/2026 20:49

Supermarket sausage rolls, in all their UPF processed pork and palm oil glory sound like the least MN food imaginable.

So why are so many people telling the OP she needs more of them? How many sausage rolls does the average Mumsnetter eat?

Ah, you obviously haven't tried Proof sausage rolls 😂

Rpop · 24/05/2026 21:14

tiramisugelato · 24/05/2026 17:27

You need more than that still - I'd at least double the sausage rolls, maybe add some pork pies or scotch eggs as well.

Yes and it’s all gone quite carby….

IWasTangoed · 24/05/2026 21:16

I felt anxiety reading this thread thinking the OP wouldn't have enough food 😅 Internally I was shouting 'the protein! The protein!' I now feel real relief that the DP is finally buying some chicken!

I've been to enough homes where I am eating a minimal amount because I know there isn't enough for everybody and I don't want the host to feel bad.

eyeofthundera · 24/05/2026 21:19

@geminicancerean Everyone seems to have piled on a bit. I think with the extra bits and pieces, that will be enough.

I think you know your family and their appetites better than mumsnet. I would have a very different amount of food for my parents, who love a good feast compared to my in-laws. My in-laws eat a very small lunch, with no carbohydrates.

Also as a mum to autistic children they have mostly eaten sugar free ice lollies today in the heat. Who needs food 😅

Xmasbaby11 · 24/05/2026 21:22

I agree with pp recommending you buy more and I see you have done.

The issue with buffets / help yourself meals is that people expect choice and will take what they like - not 1/9 of each dish you offer. And sometimes they don't eat what you think they will, so 6 sausage rolls may be demolished by 3 people, or barely touched. If people like something, they'll have more of it. So you need more dishes and more quantity of each than if you are serving something up plated as a meal. With buffets you have to over cater. That's how I see it anyway. That's why it can end up more expensive than a sit down meal.

OtterandaRock · 24/05/2026 21:33

1 more quiche and 3 large pizzas should do it

ETA 3 quiches and 3 pizzas

YourJustBee · 24/05/2026 21:40

looking to see if anyone has been through anything similar with their 8 year old. My dd is usually happy and pretty easy going but over the past few weeks she has become very difficult at times. She can be very moody and grumpy and quite unkind to us.
she will get into a real mood and very upset about small things and I just can’t get her out of the mood for ages.
i have been getting quite cross with her which I know isn’t probably the best approach but I don’t seem to be able to help her.
does anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with it? I have spoken to her to see if anything is troubling her with school and friends etc but she says it’s nothing
feeling like a bad parent right now

SueblueNZ · 24/05/2026 21:40

Bloody hell. Why so many nasty bitches on this thread?
As said, the OP knows her family - that this kid will eat barely anything, those two adults will like this but not that ...
The OP is a professional cake baker, yet all the keyboard experts know better than her how large her cake is. She's even being challenged on honesty about taking medication.
I wonder what posters here have to gain by being so competitively shitty.

Oldieandgoldie · 24/05/2026 21:41

Sorry, haven’t read the full thread.

Add two precooked chickens, two or three French sticks, and some nibbles (crisps, pretzels, savoury breadsticks etc). Go for easy and convenient. And possibly if you have time an easy dessert traybake. But Eton mess sounds fine (DIY?), if there’s enough for all. Good luck, hope you all have a lovely time.

Dontgoforward · 24/05/2026 21:44

Your posts have cheered up my Sunday so thanks OP.
I think with your DHs emergency trip for provisions you will be fine (and I believe you that the cake is enormous! I've made such a cake)
As a side note to one of your posts though, we have several DC and 3 of them will easily smash a punnets of strawberries each in a day. There's only 5/6 strawberries sometimes.

I would probably cook some burgers in the oven, have cheese slices available and some brioche buns. They can build their own adding your wonderful salads.

I’d also add French stick and a mixture of cheeses.

You need to start your own thread, maybe in Chat

OtterandaRock · 24/05/2026 21:50

The cake IS enormous! Maybe a giant tub of ice cream on the side? A small piece of cake added to a bowl of ice cream for children?

I would not bother with pork anything in hot weather.

Buffets ime mean eating party food leftovers for a couple of days.

GalaDinner · 24/05/2026 21:59

Yerroblemom1923 · 24/05/2026 17:58

I know everyone is saying not enough sausage rolls/quiche/cake etc but not ALL 9 people are going to want a whole sausage roll or a slice of quiche or salmon or cake etc etc

No they aren't. But the fatal flaw with your theory is, they're going to want something else instead, and there isn't enough.

80smonster · 24/05/2026 22:00

Add bread, cheese and grapes. Tell one of the 9 people coming they are doing the cheese course.

TheEasterBunny3 · 24/05/2026 22:02

Sorry but no - I'd be starving if thats what I was offered after a hot day & travelling. You need much more protein as that what fills people up. A lot of what youve got is more snacky food with little 'filling' power.
