AIBU to think this dinner spread will be enough for nine?

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:07

Nine people for dinner tomorrow, 6 adults, 3 kids. It’s going to be really hot. 5 of the guests will have travelled some of the day.

I’ve actually been unwell this week so have relied on M&S to do the actual work. DH isn’t sure my planned spread is going to feed everybody so I’d like some opinions

I have bought:
2 quiches (one bacon and cheese, one cheese and onion)
2 packets hot flaked salmon
Ingredients for big Greek style salad (cucumber, tomatoes, red onion, feta etc)
Big bag of green salad
2 big pots of pasta, pesto and pine nut salad
6 sausage rolls
Big bag of M&S wotsits
Big bag of M&S bacon crisps
Huge double punnet of strawberries
Meringue nests
Cream
oh and cake

The sausage rolls and crisps are for whoever wants them but I obvs had the kids in mind picking those - I know all three kids like these things and eat them.

So that’s it. I think it’s enough. DH suspicious and thinks we might need ‘extras’.

Over to you Mumsnet (don’t worry, I’m braced for criticism and I can take it!)

DONT BAKE ANOTHER CAKE-MADNESS!

I am also a baker and that cake is absolutely loads for 9 people, especially 3 tiers!

Its turned onto a pile on now and people are picking for the sake of it.

Yes, you need more food but not more cake.

Lots of people suggesting French baguettes and cheese-seems like a no brainer to add too OP.

Also, can I please ask for the recipe to the cake? Mango and coconut are two of my fav flavours!!

Whilst I think the suggested food sounds a bit light, standard portion size for fruit and veg is 80g so she's not a million miles away at 72g each of strawberries.

Well apparently some children eat 300g as standard.

Thank you! Yes it is!

And yes I absolutely am going to get more food.

Well mine definitely would if left to it, which is why I don’t leave them to it! I can’t afford to keep them in berries. They can have a banana instead.

cloudysky75 · 24/05/2026 18:22

French baguettes
cheese
meats
pizza

LeebLeefuhLurve · 24/05/2026 18:22

The cake sounds amazing, browned butter has been a revelation to my baking.

Maybe get your husband to buy some breaded chicken, M&S do a nice selection, it can be cooked beforehand and you can ride the opiate buzz while your husband puts things together.

WhatHappenedToYourFurnitureCuz · 24/05/2026 18:23

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 18:19

They can have 3 strawberries instead

It was a serious question. The ones in my family that refer to curry as "muck" definitely wouldn't be eating a mango and coconut cake.

WhatHappenedToYourFurnitureCuz · 24/05/2026 18:24

I just had 225g of fruit salad as a dessert and it certainly didn't look or feel like an enormous portion.

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 18:11

It’s a mango coconut layer cake. Made with French butter (browned) and a shitload of ganache. It really amuses me that people think it’s small because my husband laughed his head off at how huge it is. I’m not going to the garage fridge to take a pic because I just took 2 cocodamols and am feeling a bit groovy.

That sounds so nice! My friend baked the same size cake for our best mates birthday a few weeks ago and it easily fed 16 human adult people, some had seconds. MN is such an odd place

Amandasummers · 24/05/2026 18:25

Obviously I haven’t read the whole thread, but have got the jist of it

i dont think it’s enough food, not even close, but I would just add more “main” type food (for me that would be meat based products but whatever suits your style) I don’t think the strawberries or the size of the cake make a blind bit of difference!

Wickedlittledancer · 24/05/2026 18:25

The thing is you can’t count on people only eating recommended portion sizes when hosting. Well you can and if there isn’t much food they surely will, but most people tend to be more generous.

NameChangeMay2026 · 24/05/2026 18:28

geminicancerean · 24/05/2026 17:14

Well it’s actually ‘tea’ because my family are working class and use that phrase and also have no issue helping themselves to bits.

But I forgot a pretty important addition!

I have two bags of miniature jersey royals and am going to make potato salad (with boiled eggs, mayo and spring onions) with one bag and boil the other bag and roll them in butter.

Forgot to mention the spuds!

Two bags of potatoes are hardly enough for 9. Those bags are NOT large.

LittleMi55Nobody · 24/05/2026 18:28

better to have too much than not enough, like another poster said you can freeze some left overs or give the remainder to your guests to take home if you dont want it

Garble · 24/05/2026 18:29

I bake and would agree with OP that a 9 inch, three layer, filled and iced cake is huge and would way more than 9 people!

Mango and coconut are two of my favourite flavourings, together is just heaven. Save me a slice please 😁

Jesus, us boomers were eating in the lovely curry restaurants in the seventies and eighties, piss off @geminicancerean they probably just don't like your cooking.

I’m with you. I’m a boomer granny and been hoovering curry for decades. Fed up with these lazy tropes.
OP you are parsimonious- are you averse to protein? So many people have suggested at least some chicken or BBQ meats, your menu seems to be missing the main event.

One of my late relatives from the Silent Generation used to refer to rice as "foreign muck". 🤣

I’ve served similar if not more for 5. So you need double that amount.

RumPidgeon · 24/05/2026 18:31

Not sure: can you add some celery pieces and other crudité such as carrots, cucumber sticks and peppers for kids to eat? I’d also add hummous (red and original). Some dips and sourdough sticks wouldn’t go amiss.

What about a potatoe salad and sticks of nice seeded and white bread?

Ghastisflabbered · 24/05/2026 18:31

OP I’m literally only posting cos I want to see the absolutely enormous pile of leftovers likely consisting of everything you’ve been persuaded to panic buy.

id have added another quiche and another couple of pots of pasta salad at maximum,

maybe cheese and bread cos I love cheese and bread.

Owly11 · 24/05/2026 18:32

You need enough of everything for everyone. So you need at least an extra quiche and an extra 3 sausage rolls, more green salad, more crisps, more strawberries. Not sure how big a packet of salmon is but you need at least one fillet each for the adults. Given you think this is enough food I would also guess that the pasta and Greek salad might both be a bit small.

I have replied that I am increasing the meat content. Maybe you didn’t see it.

Just so everybody is aware WE ARE BUYING MORE MEAT.

All the boomers I know would make a big curry to feed a crowd - it would be one of their first suggestions!

Op, I’m late to offer any suggestions as you’ve already got your shopping list for tomorrow ready, but I personally would buy enough sausage rolls so everyone present could have one if they chose rather than say “oh, that was intended for someone else as I didn’t think they’d eat the quiche” to anyone reaching for one.

I guess it depends what end of the ‘boomer’ scale you are. I’m tail end (early 60s) so very much a curry eater. Perhaps those born at the beginning (1946 ish) not so much. No one my age would call curry muck.

Haveanopinion · 24/05/2026 18:34

Personally would have bought 18 sausage rolls so there are 2 each and would give a bit more selection of savoury protein/carbs. I assume you know the appetite and food preferences for your visitors but if not I think you needed to make a slightly wider variety. What you are making sounds lovely and if you have been unwell perhaps dh could have helped more with the selection and purchasing of the spread?!
