To ask what you think of Thomas Tuchel's England World Cup Squad?

In my football era 😌

No Trent Alexander Arnold, no Phil Foden, no Slabhead, no Cole Palmer

I think its a shame that theres no Harry Maguire - his mum taking to defend him on social media makes her, imo, slightly iconic

What do we think? Will Tuchel bring us the cup, or are we in for heartbreak?

I like Jack Grealish. But we’ll see. 🤷‍♀️

I like Grealish too

But noone compares to my beloved Pickford - can't wait for him to shout at the team for making him save goals 😄

Harry Maguire has a criminal record so probably wouldn't get an ESTA

Now i didnt know this - i no longer find his mother iconic, and think she sounds awful

I agree about Maguire - I think he is dire, and as you say his entitlement is a reason he shouldn’t go.

Agree with both of you @murasaki

Looked at the list and hardly recognised any names! Felt old.

Oh same 😄

I feel ancient when I look at Wayne Rooney!

If you follow football, you'd recognise them all.

That doesn't mean that I don't also feel old when looking at Rooney.....

However I also feel thin and in possession of a neck, so that's a plus.

Bellingham is enough of a diva for the lot of them, can't carry another!

He will be an asset if he focuses on the game and has less temper tantrums

mumofoneAloneandwell · Yesterday 20:11

Bellingham always seems to dive? 😄

Am surprised and disappointed Harry Maguire isn't in the squad, but am also astonished he publicised it before the squad was announced. It's not a good look. Nor is his Mum chiming in with her moans.

Also astonished Toney has been called back from Saudi.

I don't understand the love for Henderson, but every England Manager has always wanted to include him so I'm guessing he must add a lot with his "presence" in the dressing room / training camp or something.

Not surprised Foden isn't going. He looked good in the Man City triple winning team but has done nothing since then.

Am surprised Stones is going as he's played so little this season. I presume that is the reason Cole Palmer hasn't been picked - he's not got the razor sharpness he had before injury, so am surprised Stone is included when Maguire isn't.

I've never understood the love for James, tbh. although most people seem to think he would be a definite.

It a testament to the depth of talent at England’s disposal and the success of the Premier League’s academies that Tuchel can leave out Alexander-Arnold, Tomori, Foden & Palmer. What would Scotland give to have those four available to them for the World Cup?

Tuchel has been brave enough to back his own judgement and, of course, in attacking positions he can’t take everyone. The decision which baffles me, though, is picking Dan Burn ahead of Harry Maguire. England’s defensive record in the tournaments in which Slabhead has played is absolutely outstanding, he is a big threat in the opposition’s box, he’s vastly experienced and he can take a penalty. Apart from that…

He's well known as Slabhead.

His wife and mother have been embarrassing with their comments. Really not a good look.

SpottyAlpaca · Yesterday 20:25

As for Toney’s inclusion, Tuchel needs a Plan B in case the unthinkable happens and (whispers) Kane gets…. Let’s just not go there.

Playing Foden as a false 9 against Japan didn’t work. Watkins gives him one option, Toney is a more traditional centre forward. I can see why Tuchel wants both. Hopefully, neither will be required except if we’re 2-0 up in group games so Harry can be subbed & wrapped in cotton wool.

Well they may as well try something new as we are generally crap

2018 World Cup : Semi Final
Euro 2020 : Final
2022 World Cup : Quarter Final
Euro 2024 : Final

We didn’t actually win a tournament under Southgate but our record in recent tournaments is hardly ‘crap’. And it’s a lot better than Germany’s.

Love Ollie so much and he’s back scoring again and playing really well but his penalty record is terrible. If we’re heading towards a shoot out, I’d want Toney on the pitch before Ollie. I don’t expect either to get a huge amount of minutes to be honest, Kane will rightly play nearly all of most games.

Wharton out is a big surprise as he’s so good. Burn in is a big surprise because he’s bang average.

MGW needs to spend the summer healing that head.

Yep, if we need a game player if kane needs to go off, Ollie, if crunch time, Toney.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · Yesterday 20:54

Toney is used to the heat. The Saudi league has greatly improved as a lot of young South American footballers are there now. Toney is second highest scorer there I believe. Having said that, Gibbs White is unlucky.

Tuchel also has said he has looked for a group of players who support each other and really gel. This group were together in the autumn and he observed their attitude which he liked. There’s more to a team than star individuals and that’s what he’s looking for.

Too many haven’t played enough though. Much as I like John Stones, he’s barely played. Henderson is obviously going to be “dad”. Spence is versatile but I’m sad Calvert Lewin isn’t going. I think he’s been exceptional for Leeds. Maguire obviously thrived with the latest manager but is such a sulker!

Overall a few odd choices but and few deserving to feel disappointed.

Grealish is still recovering from injury.

Jordan Pickford is dynamite.

Maguire is a twat and so are his family, they're local to me.

Definitley! Really disappointed for him, Hall has been amazing this season x

I do think a lot of us armchair fans forget about how important this is.
I'm guessing that is why Henderson makes every squad.
Tuchel himself has said it already - this isn't a list of the best 36 English players, it is a squad that he believes work well with each other.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · Yesterday 21:38

@JustGiveMeReason Tuchel gave a good explanation of how this group worked well together. It made me wonder if one or two who have been left out are not “team players” in the same way. 26 players isn’t it?

DizzyPizzy · Yesterday 21:55

The only surprise for me is Ivan Toney.

From what Tuchel has said, we have a sensible manager who understands it’s about picking a team, not the best individuals.

Yes, sorry, fat thumbs. Blush

MeetMeOnTheCorner · Today 15:18

I guess some players will feel they have not had a huge chance to demonstrate team spirit but older players won’t be around for the Euros so the younger ones know what Tuchel is looking for. It doesn’t appear to be egos.
