It’s going to be hot next few days.
Just to let you know that there are more foods to eat than just salad and BBQs. Do people in hot countries eat salads and BBQs all the time? No they don’t.

Also you don’t need lettuce to have a salad.

Some nice bread, cooked meats, smoked salmon, jars of pickled veg, cheese, those ready made Spanish omelettes etc.

(I actually make an amazing Spanish omelette, all by myself! I like to have it with a tomato salad when it’s hot 😉 )

Ah fab thanks, I had no idea! All these years I’ve been munching on lettuce and tomatoes the minute the temp goes over 20 degrees, and I could have been eating ready made omelettes instead! My mind is truly blown.

A Spanish omelette isn't a "ready made omelette". Google will show you pictures.

isthismylifenow · 21/05/2026 11:30

I live in a hot country, and have never had a Spanish omelette.

And we just eat normally as far as I am aware. There are no special meals just for a hot day.

If anyone can tell me where to actually find a salad in the UK that actually consists of more than one salad leaf and half of a tomato, I would be impressed.

You are shopping in the wrong places. I make loads of salads that don't contain lettuce.

But I like the lettuce because I find it filling and hydrating and a good vehicle for the dressing and whatever else.

During the heatwave a couple of years ago I put my air fryer in the garden so it wouldn't heat up the kitchen.

I do this when I am making steak in mine.

But only because it smokes like a old chimney and fumes out the house.

No, I'm a hermit and just make arbitrary comments so people like you can make passive aggressive statements to feel cool online. You're welcome.

It wasn't passive aggressive and no, I don't feel "cool". I just wondered why you have only ever seen salads that are a leaf and half a tomato you haven't.

Any supermarket I have been in has a range of salads based on a variety of ingredients. I have also never been to a restaurant where the salad option is one leaf and half a tomato.

My OH often has a salad in McDonald's. He has never been served one leaf and half a tomato.

Ok well I guess all my experiences are false and only yours true. Thanks for that. Was so trapped in hallucination before you came along not being passive aggressive. 🙄

Copt Oak Markfield for one and all pubs. Most restaurant salads are pathetically small and lazily prepared, in favour of chips and peas, so make my own at home. M&S make nice salads but can't ever find one out. Happy for suggestions.

I live near you but haven’t been to the Copt Oak for years! Surely that’s just a side salad though? If you ordered, for example, a chicken ceasar salad then it wouldnt just be a lettuce leaf and half a tomato!
Anyway, in terms of recommendations nearby with decent salads…

The Griffin Inn in Swithland
The Old Bull’s Head in Woodhouse Eaves
The Wheatsheaf in Woodhouse Eaves
The Pear Tree in Woodhouse Eaves
The Blacksmiths Arms in Barrow Upon Soar
The Manor House in Quorn

There are loads of lovely pubs/restaurants in that part of Leicestershire!

ETA I’ve just checked the menu at the Copt Oak and it has a ‘sunshine salad’ on the menu which has far more than lettuce and tomato on it!

Tableforjoan · 21/05/2026 11:36

Well I’m glad to know I can cancel the bbq and salad. Thank fuck someone told me 😅

Who’d of thought aye we don’t have to have a salad because it’s hot.

I come from a hot country and we do in fact eat a lot of BBQ and salad in hot weather. And if not BBQ, then things like cold meat/chicken, quiche... and salad.

But also, our salads are varied, interesting, tasty. None of this bit of iceberg lettuce, chunks of cucumber and half a tomato stuff. I still chuckle in a slightly obnoxious way when I remember the time we went for a BBQ at a friend's and they offered roudn the salad and DS came up to me quietly later and said, "Mum - that's not really a salad is it" or some version.

I know what a Spanish omelette is, I spent 20 years living in Valencia. As I said, I make a lovely one.
You can buy them ready made in supermarkets. I assume that’s what the OP was talking about when she said ‘a ready made omelette’. Google will show you pictures.

I don't live near there, was there for business, and what the menu promised was not as delivered. But, I'll keep these other places in mind for next time. Thanks.

The Copt Oak Markfield offers an aptly named 'Sunshine Salad' of Kale, brown rice, soya beans, little gem lettuce, pea shoots, rocket, sliced cucumber, cherry tomatoes, red onion, red pepper, French dressing, crispy onions, with either chicken and bacon, or bbq cauliflower.

As a side note, this weekend, if we do a BBQ, which I am thinking we will, I'm feeling like a watermelon, feta, cucumber, lime and mint salad (which even fussy DD will eat as long as I don't add chilli).

And an aubergine, tomato, pine nut salad. With chilli! Grin.

I'm not in the mood fo rit but my tomato, red onion and parsley salad is quite famous.

And, this has lettuce, admittedly, but I love a "proper" green salad - lettuce, other leaves/herbs, chargrilled asparagus or courgette, spring onions, avocado with a lemony/honey/mustard dressing.

And a different greenish salad that DS loves is kale, garlic, almonds, lemon and parmesan cheese.

Ah I’d rather skip the tomato to be honest. I’ll trade them out for some radish.

Ready-made omelette? Dear god, what has this site become?

The remains of last Sunday's roast chicken, cold, should suffice.

we all know the Mumsnet chicken is everlasting and can feed the whole family for months

TheBloomingDahlia · 21/05/2026 11:46

I was actually going to start a thread asking for salad ideas 🙈. Mine are lettuce, cucumber, tomato and I don’t want to eat them no matter what the weather is! But all the salads I see on SM seem to include loads of dairy or special ingredients you can’t buy at Asda. Lettuce again for me I guess

Daftypants · 21/05/2026 11:50

In hot weather I serve lots of different salads , nicoise for example where I need to boil a few new potatoes + steam green beans , boil eggs .
Tuna and bean salad is lovely too .
Sometimes I sear tuna steaks to make it fancier rather than use canned tuna ( I’m happy enough with canned tuna though )
I will make omelettes, frittata, simple pasta dishes on the hob such as Pasta alla Norma .
Also make stir fries and fajitas ..anything quick that’s not going to generate heat ( back of our house where kitchen is faces south )
Also donburi ( rice bowls ) are a staple here as we have a rice cooker and I add cooked salmon or chicken, radish , avocado, cucumber etc plus top with furikake
