AIBU to say there is more to hot weather food than salads?

It’s going to be hot next few days.
Just to let you know that there are more foods to eat than just salad and BBQs. Do people in hot countries eat salads and BBQs all the time? No they don’t.

Also you don’t need lettuce to have a salad.

Some nice bread, cooked meats, smoked salmon, jars of pickled veg, cheese, those ready made Spanish omelettes etc.

My pet hate is the idea that food is weather related. My late DM used to complain feebly that she couldn't eat a thing when it was hot..
Plenty of things make me lose my appetite but heat isn't one of them . Best thing about holidays is the lovely food ( which isn't just salad).

Yerroblemom1923 · 21/05/2026 15:46

Can't beat a "massive salad" in a heatwave!

I was actually going to start a thread asking for salad ideas 🙈. Mine are lettuce, cucumber, tomato and I don’t want to eat them no matter what the weather is! But all the salads I see on SM seem to include loads of dairy or special ingredients you can’t buy at Asda. Lettuce again for me I guess

Do you eat pulses? I like to mix up some chickpeas with sweetcorn, raw red onion, halved baby tomatoes, cashews and coriander. Then I make a dressing from sesame oil, soy sauce, honey and lime juice to drizzle over it. (Actually more of a flood than a drizzle).

Also a big fan of cous cous with some herbs or spices and some roasted veg (red onion, pepper, carrot, toms). I like to eat my cous cous with about half a tub a generous helping of houmous.

All of these ingredients are available in regular supermarkets.

KindPanda · 21/05/2026 16:13

OP, what you have described in your very condescending post about what constitutes a salad is in fact a charcuterie board, not a salad. The irony!

RampantIvy · 21/05/2026 16:17

Inspired by this thread, I currently have some bulgur wheat soaking to make some tabbouleh. I have a huge bag of parsley in the fridge and loads of fresh mint in the garden.

Not a lettuce leaf in sight for tonight's meal.

I can’t eat hot food in hot weather. Salads all the way.

Oh I don’t know my dh made some garlic onions for his hot dog last week and well you could smell him coming.

Our entire house was definitely marked save from vampires 🧛 from his breath alone.

In our house that's known as an elegant sufficiency 😉

My dad said our toddler was the first baby he'd ever known that had garlic breath.

sashh · 21/05/2026 16:34

I make a courgette and coriander soup. Hot in winter, chilled in summer.

Loads of picnic foods work well too. Quiche, sausage rolls, cooked meats, bread, couscous.

I feel hungry now.

Ready-made omelette? Dear god, what has this site become?

The remains of last Sunday's roast chicken, cold, should suffice.

It’s a Spanish tortilla and it is how the Spanish buy them, from supermarkets.

Most of the Spanish people I knew in the 20 years I lived in Spain made their own!

HostaCentral · 21/05/2026 17:05

Well I never have a BBQ because I detest them. So I will always still cook and eat in the kitchen. Summer foods consist of oven baked chicken or fish, or grilled or quick pan fried meats and fish. Roasted veg, a variety of salads, all shapes colours represented. My Italian roots will also provide pastas, but lighter varieties, less meat, more veg and fish.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 21/05/2026 17:08

Gazpacho and cold soups are fantastic as well.

I also love a good bean salad. Whether that’s green beans or other kinds of beans.

fish dishes are fantastic as well imo!

ConverselyAttired · 21/05/2026 17:24

Salad's not even a meal. It's a side.
I said what I said.

I lived in Cyprus for 10 yeads. Pretty much survived on salads and bbq 10 months of the years, so you’re wrong! 😆

Surely most make their own, they are incredibly simple 😆

JohnTheRevelator · 21/05/2026 17:53

But it's OK if it's MASSIVE salad 😂

TheBoyMayorOfPartridge · 21/05/2026 18:07

We’re just having our normal meals I haven’t really adjusted for weather.

Edit - it’s incredibly rare I make anything complicated, time consuming or that requires the oven to be on for hours anyway, apart from the odd slow cooked meal which yes I tend to associate more with winter. Queen of the 30 minute meal here (15 mins or less if I can get away with it).

PastaAllaNorma · 21/05/2026 18:26

Today we're having salmon, jersey royals and asparagus from the garden.

Tomorrow is salad niçoise with tuna steaks.

Saturday is a mezze, Sunday is burgers and potato salad, Monday is fish tacos and salads.

I bloody love a salad.

Most but not all, so maybe some bought in the supermarket. It’s quite common to see them in the supermarkets in the UK and no more extraordinary than seeing quiche.

BunnyLake · 21/05/2026 18:56

I like pea shoots, alfalfa and mango in a salad. Along with buttered/salted new potatoes, boiled eggs and avocado. And a non-tangy dressing. Usually as a side with salmon or a pork chop. I go off salmon a lot though so can struggle with a main component.

TheDogsMother · 21/05/2026 19:13

WhistPie · 21/05/2026 18:37

🙄

Why the eye roll ? They are very common in Spanish supermarkets and here for that matter. A good one is quite time consuming to make so shop bought is a good substitute.

I'm on the west coast of Scotland and it isn't actually going to be anything approaching "hot" weather until Sunday at the earliest Sad

But tomorrow we are having homemade chicken gyros with greek salad and tzatziki which is definitely hot weather food, often we'll bbq it but the weather's still shite tomorrow so oven it is

Also this weekend is steak with steamed broccoli and asparagus, again imo hot weather food

Next week I'll be making feta and watermelon salad with chicken on the side and crusty bread dipped in oil/balsamic

And we'll probably spatchcock a chicken and throw it on the bbq to have with herb salad and jersey royals loaded in butter

OctopusSexArm · 21/05/2026 19:21

But actually sometimes I love an 80s salad, there's something so nostalgic about lettuce, tomato, hard boiled eggs, ham, salad cream and pickled onions with a wodge of cheddar and some buttered bread 🤷🏻‍♀️
