Football is a working class sport at its heart. No child should be prevented from watching a major sporting final because they can't afford to!

Edit - ask**

Not everyone is a football fan though....

True - although lots are, enough so that football results are considered breaking news

I feel the same about rugby, tennis and athletics!

The free to view list of sporting events should be expanded. This is just one event to add.

shellyleppard · 20/05/2026 20:10

I prefer rugby... Less drama. If they get hurt they carry on. A footballer gets lightly tapped he's rolling around for ages. Yes I know there are some really nasty injuries in all contact sports

Oh yes the cricket!!

Lots of fans in London, I know that - its important to motivate the youth?!

I think there are far more valuable things in life that people from deprived backgrounds may wish to lobby for access to rather than a sports game.

FudgeFudy · 20/05/2026 20:48

I suspect MN will feel that this is somewhat outwith their remit.

Hadalifeonce · 20/05/2026 20:50

Can the government dictate to the TV companies?

Ablondiebutagoody · 20/05/2026 20:53

They would just stream it for free. Plenty of websites available

I mean, 'important ' is probably a bit strong 😅 but I like cricket, I used to play back-garden cricket with my dad and siblings and I used to watch it on telly if it was an important match. Not that I'd watch the whole Test. But you could dip in and out. Then they stopped broadcasting it on any free to watch channels (bizarrely after we'd just had a really good season).
It would just be nice if they occasionally showed it live on the BBC. Even just the Ashes. Come on. We're just asking for a sliver of the football time.

TheNewGaard · 20/05/2026 21:12

They reckon that Arsenal are one of the largest, and wealthiest, fan groups in the country, so they think - ker-ching!

I agree! They should do this for their community and their country!

Oh I think a cricket final should be aired on free tv!

Sounds like a big part of people's cultures

They can intervene a little

Fwiw mps opted not to make more football free to air - this happened in the last few years

Why not?

Im not a football fan but so many big sporting events are behind a paywall now I think it's not good.

Certain lobby groups keep complaining that some sports are dominated by private school athletes, well if families have to pay £30+ a month to watch sport it's not really surprising.

MaCheCazzo · 20/05/2026 21:23

Ridiculous idea but possibly more palatable than bollocks like MAFS.

Yeah, but the actual game is fucking boring.

There is a reason that football is the world game.

shellyleppard · 20/05/2026 21:33

@MasterBeth i have to disagree on that point....but not everyone likes the same things

Sunshineandrainbow · 20/05/2026 21:41

Is this just because your fav team are playing? Or a general concern.

I am sure they used to be shown live on you tube.

I googled earlier and was disappointed to see europa final tonight isn't on discovery for free like it was last year!

It's a shame but maybe it encourages people to go to pubs that are showing it.

We found a family friendly pub to go to when dc were younger and we didn't have sports channels. Harder though when it's evening kick offs.

Soon be the world cup and matches on normal TV 😊
