Football is a working class sport at its heart. No child should be prevented from watching a major sporting final because they can't afford to!

Can't watch any cricket anywhere ever 😢

Yes, and it's a bloody shame. I've resorted to listening to the radio test match commentary while keeping an eye on the Guardian's ball by ball comments online. If it starts to turn into a bit of a nail biter, or someone's playing an epic innings I pop to the pub and watch it there!

It feels as though football's on every few days, and I'm dreading the sodding world cup.

Although I already posted a very cheap way to do it at home.

And yes, @mumofoneAloneandwell wasn't suggesting people be forced to sit in front of it with their eyes clamped open like Alex in A Clockwork Orange.

You can watch cricket for free on TV. Read the thread.

I mean, 'important ' is probably a bit strong 😅 but I like cricket, I used to play back-garden cricket with my dad and siblings and I used to watch it on telly if it was an important match. Not that I'd watch the whole Test. But you could dip in and out. Then they stopped broadcasting it on any free to watch channels (bizarrely after we'd just had a really good season).
It would just be nice if they occasionally showed it live on the BBC. Even just the Ashes. Come on. We're just asking for a sliver of the football time.

Wasn't the Ashes supposed to be free?

T20 isn't proper cricket!

The No True Scotsman fallacy.

I like cricket too. We used to play and had it on in the background as dc. I love the sound of it so sometimes put the radio on with it.

T20 isn't proper cricket!

It really is.

You can like more than one type of game you know.

We have season tickets and are happy to watch red ball or white ball.

We go to the T20s, and always try to get to a test match, and, when I get time am happy to go to a County game. Shockingly, we even enjoy The Hundred.

I don't get the need to put down other games that people have. Rugby fans are notorious for it, and there is a certain group of cricket fans the same. Nobody is making you watch it, but the money it brings in is propping up the County game, and that alone should be respected, before you start looking at the number of younger fans that love it.

I appreciate that information @murasaki , although I don't think that is widely known.

I'm fine - I can go to my brother's house Smile

I don't think it is either, I got it for the villa Europa final, someone on the reddit thread for our club suggested it. But as I say, I now have access to the Palace and Arsenal finals and all the hbo shows should I choose to binge in the next month, I'll cancel it then.

And reinstate for the supercup in August! Villa v either arsenal or psg, both of whom we've beaten recently...

A good thing about the hundred, and I was dubious about it given it is only 20 balls shorter per over than the T20 so I didn't see the need, is that they do the womens and mens in the same day. So better crowds for the women. My sister takes her girls and they love it. I like it too bar the TV graphics, which are 1980s at best.....

Why should they get it for free

You could ask the same about libraries. Why should people read for free?

Answer. You get things for free because they make people's lives better.

There is loads of money in the game so that's even more reason why they could make some key games available for nothing. Overall it makes sense.

Bjorkdidit · 23/05/2026 05:46

To watch live TV on free to air channels, you need a TV licence, which is £180 per year and you can't dip in and out of without massive faff unlike streaming channels that you can sign up for month to month.

Therefore unless you can justify the TV licence otherwise, which many don't see the value in, its cheaper just to pay a subscription for the month this is on.

Or you could watch it in a pub?

but that’s for the football clubs to agree - not the government. Subsidising a business - particularly such a wealthy one - is a terrible idea

No. Far too much sport as it is. Lots of other free and healthier things the poor, poor children can do instead.

You don’t think watching a major game would inspire children to go out and pick up a football?

Words · 23/05/2026 08:10

No, I don’t. As a child my great passions were dogs, horses, books, cooking and the countryside. They still are, as it was innate. None of it ‘inspired ’ by a ‘role model’. Role models are a recent and largely spurious invention and I am greatly sceptical they have much impact in reality.

My daughter has 10000% been inspired to get into football by watching women’s euros.

My elder dd was inspired to get into gymnastics after the 2012 Olympics. There was a huge boom in sign ups for both those things after these specific events.

the link is undeniable.

You were obviously fortunate enough to have a childhood that allowed for horses and the countryside. Imagine being a child living on the 6th floor of a housing estate who doesn’t have access to such luxuries but can be inspired by seeing a major sporting event.

Check the stats they speak for themselves. Look how many people got into sports after the London Olympics. What an isolated and frankly sad world you live in where your views are so narrow.

To be fair it’ll mostly be French kids inspired. Arsenal are shit and you’d hope the parents have better tasteb

I can't imagine Arsenal's bus parade will match Villa's, they're too media trained. Our was streamed live on YouTube, they were all pissed, and it was the most joyous funny thing ever. Total vibes.

Loved seeing Ian Wright celebrating 😄

And you sound close minded who has probably never stepped foot on an inner London estate.

Look at the background some of today’s players come from not a horse between them.
