to turn away my takeaway?

Opinions please! My friend thinks me and my husband are being completely ridiculous but I'm adamant we're in the right (but happy to be told otherwise!)
Ordered an Indian takeaway on ubereats for tonight (50% off woop woop!). Asked for scheduled delivery 7.40-8. All good, order accepted, confirmation email, your order will be delivered at 7.40.
Come 6.10 there is a ring on the bell and it's our food! We were just starting to try and calm our 5 and 2 year olds down before bedtime started, and were basically nowhere near ready for dinner! So we said "no". The man just stood and stared at us like we were utterly insane. After about a minute of silent staring he went back to his car to call his manager and then yelled out of the window that he'd come back later and drove off.
Now I know there is a reasonable chance he'll just being the exact same food back (possibly with added spit), but I think the principal remains. What is the point of being able to schedule delivery if it's totally ignored?? We wanted hot, fresh food at about 8 after the boys were asleep and we could relax. My friend happened to call a minute ago and basically said that I was being ridiculous and should've just taken the food. Who's right?
YABU - just take the damn food whenever it comes, Otters!
YANBU -you paid for the food to be delivered at a certain time, it's reasoab to want it at that time.

The OP probably did explain why, and is just using the word 'no' for brevity.

KirstieKaren · Yesterday 20:47

We had the same recently - scheduled slot was 730, with the plan of having the kids in bed asleep. It turned up at 630. We were a bit annoyed but took it anyway. Just had a slightly less relaxing mealtime than originally planned.
I’ll make sure to emphasize the importance of the time slot next time.
I don’t blame you for sending it back though. What’s the point of asking for a time slot if they ignore it

Thank you - yes to clarify the "no" was just to quickly explain what our respinse was. We were perfectly polite but said that we'd ordered it for a particular ti.e and they were 90 minutes early so we wanted it made and brought for then.

and UPDATE they brought our order at 8, if it was the same food they'd reheated it very well because it was piping hot :)
Interesting split in opinions on this.

It’s a tad annoying that everything didn’t go exactly to plan but no way would I have sent the food back. Indian food is lovely re-heated too and I’d rather it sat in my kitchen for 1.5 hours than in the back of someone’s car. You kind of bit off your nose to spite your face just so that you could be right.

PurpleFlower1983 · Yesterday 21:09

I would have just taken the food but I see where you’re coming from.

Newnamesarehard · Yesterday 21:14

Just curious, why not order it when they are down?

Because kids wake up so even if you preordered it and the kids were still awake at 8 then what? Accepted it and reheated it anyway or?

sunshinestar1986 · Yesterday 21:14

I've noticed they often do this.
Just order it when you need it and don't bother scheduling again
They're don't seem to read instructions.

But if it came early
Might as well take it,cuz if you wanted them to learn from this, unfortunately they just won't.

I didn't even know you could schedule a time for takeaway deliveries. We're still stuck with order roughly when you want it and hope it won't be too long out here in the sticks.

Here, you order, they tell you a time that could be anywhere between 20 minutes and an hour (lies!) Then two hours later when it's not arrived, you collect it and get a 30% discount.

PinkElephants356 · Yesterday 21:16

I ordered a supermarket delivery and it came an hour early while I was still working, the driver didn’t even say “sorry I’m early any chance you can take delivery now”, he just expected to be able to deliver it. I told them to come back at the proper time slot. I’d paid for the hour slot rather than the 4 hr window because I couldn’t have it whilst working. I think that was reasonable.

HedgehogsOnTheWall · Yesterday 21:16

You were being utterly ridiculous. Do you not have a microwave?

MilkyLeonard · Yesterday 21:17

suburberphobe · Yesterday 20:24

Of course you buzz them in and accept the food, like previous people say, heat it up when ready to eat.

They're not at your beck and call, OP!

Erm… the OP literally paid for a service where she would receive her food at a certain time. That is the entire point of a scheduled delivery. Why are you trying to make out the OP has made some kind of outlandish demand?

I'm glad it seemed hot.

It was reasonable to want it when they confirmed it would come, but there is no way I'd have risked having it drive round for 90 mins at bacteria-breeding heat!

So yanbu but yab brave!

Mumtobabyhavoc · Yesterday 21:20

The only issue I can see is if they attempted delivery and you weren't home. Either way you're getting food that was kept warm 2 hours or you re-heat it. I'd have taken it, messaged the restaurant that delivery was 90 mins early making it an inconvenience for you and then eaten my dinner. I would not have waited to eat and I would have included the kids for the meal.

I get lots of this - usually worded as "we wondered if you would LIKE early delivery."

If I'd have liked it then, I'd have booked it for then.

But if I can take it, I do. However when I have been unable, they sound very put out!

Just re heat it ive done it many times before.
In fact i love it if it arrives early.
Im with your friend on this.
Its not the drivers fault is it.

But it’s clearly not a “Yay, it’s early!” scenario, is it? Otherwise why would the OP have specifically requested for it to arrive later?

Come on; it only takes a bit of common sense.

These things happen in life we dont always get what we want.

Thanksforyourlackofthought · Yesterday 21:23

I’m just trying to get my head around the fact that you couldn’t eat if your children were wake.

SwatTheTwit · Yesterday 21:23

Technically you weren’t in the wrong, but like… just take the food and leave a review mentioned the earlier time. Making them come back is a bit shit.

I’ve had this before with a driver who arrived 90 minutes early and was most affronted to find I wasn’t at home. He was babbling, “But I’m here now, I’m here now”. Well tough luck sunshine - I’m not!

I got back 15 minutes before the earliest time he was due to arrive, by which point he’d phoned THREE TIMES wanting to know how far way I was. Absolutely ridiculous.

Yeah it is quite naughty. I'm sure they are not supposed to but want to get to the pub!

ilovebrie8 · Yesterday 21:27

I’d just take it and re heat it. I’d not want to risk them spitting or anything else if they returned it later 😝

Oh and once we bolted home after he rang early, and there he was sitting in the van looking all puckered about the mouth and the groceries were SITTING IN THE SUN ON THE DOORSTEP, but he excused himself by saying he had "waited until the correct time" as if totally oblivious to the fact the timing was all about keeping them refrigerated, not getting to say hello to him in person!
