To think some older women having tax payers funded ivf are hypocrites?

There seems to be a substantial group of people who are ok with calling teen mums a waste of their tax money but then leave child bearing too late and expect the tax payers to foot the bill for their multiple ivf cycles which costs the tax payer up to 100 million a year.

Hypocrites!!!

scoobysnaxx · 19/05/2026 12:10

Completely ignorant.
Most people try for years before doing IVF.
In 2026 most women are not just having a baby with any old bum. It can take a long time to find someone suitable you want to have a baby with.

As I said I’m not talking about everyone who goes through ivf I am only talking about the hypocrites.
And I’m not going to have empathy and be kind to them when they never would have done the same to me

But it's not the act they're having IVF that makes them hypocritical. Or the fact they are older than you think parents should be (judgemental in a different way by the way). It's just those people being who they are.

Post about them specifically rather than having a go at a whole group of people who have nothing to do with it.

Yup this.

My mum. She's been with my dad for 38 years, works, and they've been living in the same housing association house since 1996 (and she's the only one on the tenancy agreement.)

I am sure that there are people who have judged teen mothers who have gone on to have IVF on the NHS. However I just don’t think the link is clear.

If your thread was about how can we better support teen mums as a society and how can we reduce that judgement then you would probably get a lot of support. However to suggest that a lot of women who have IVF have previously judged younger mums seems to be a bit of a reach.

Most people don’t have IVF because they have left it too late but because they have a fertility issue that has always existed. The only older person I know who had IVF, did so because they were using a sperm donor and doing it alone.

those threads have been done before many times in the 20+ years of mumsnet existence. I’ve read a couple. Usually brings out all the people who insist every single teen mum they’ve ever met only had children to get a free house from the council.

Hopefully this will get the judgemental ones thinking about their own hypocrisy

I don’t judge either group of mums - just want to preface by saying that.

However your post is missing the mark by a mile.

The women who “left it too late” would have had years of NI and tax contributions, likely have some sort of stability (housing, savings, childcare money) that the teenagers would not have built up over the years.

Also YABU to link infertility to age alone. IVF on the NHS is not offered to anyone over 40. You may be able to get one cycle under 42.

It’s not that specific more people hate teen mums then you think or at least think they’re a waste of tax money who only get pregnant for the benefits but then these people have no problem taking from the tax payer themselves

But the "taking money from the taxpayers" are for 2 completely different reasons

  1. Teen mum didn't bother to think of the consequences - not health related, just poor planning and statistically goes on for a very long time
  2. Woman faces fertility issues which the NHS have a very strict protocol and testing around - medical related and once off. NHS won't fund just because!

I suggested deleting the thread because you just seem butthurt and your OP doesn't actually get to the point you are trying to make.

There is a difference between taking from the pot you've added to for years for medical treatment (women having IVF at a later age), and never paying into the pot but using it to live off (some teen mum's and people on benefits who could work).

It's not hypocritical to not want your tax to pay for someone else's life, but use the medical services you pay for.

I have nothing against teen mum's. But I have a relative who manages to get away without working despite being completely capable and gets a lot of benefits. I pay a lot of tax. That feels unfair, no? Is it hypocritical that I've been for tests on the NHS this morning?

ComfyKnickers · 19/05/2026 11:30

Personally I don't think that IVF should be funded by the NHS. No-one has the 'right' to have a child in my opinion.

But I'm sure that many people will disagree loudly and emotionally.

No I completely agree. But then I think that any sniff of mistreatment of a child and you should have the ability to procreate removed.

the population would tank of course but the damage that the wrong parents do which then gets passed through generations is horrific.

Loads of people hate teen mums, anyone that was one will know this me personally was pregnant at 15 and have been disrespected by a vast array of people for it.
Some of these people leave child bearing too late and then expect the tax payer to pay for their ivf which seems incredibly hypocritical

Sorry this is complete nonsense. I knew quite a few teenage mums, most were treated with respect and kindness. Most women needing ivf are not having it because they left it too late!

You obviously feel bitter towards someone in your life.

DefiantRabbit9 · 19/05/2026 11:05

Point to me a teenage mum who has been paying into the system for 20+ years, has a stable relationship and has their own place that they pay for.

My former dil. Pregnant at 15, now 39 and has worked for well over 20 years, stable relationship of 10+ years and pays her own rent. There are tens of thousands like her.

BunnyLake · 19/05/2026 12:20

Spiderbug · 19/05/2026 10:49

You see it online a lot as well. Insulting teen mums and accusing them of wasting tax money. Meanwhile the ivf industry is booming because of older women

Are you seeking such places out? I’ve never seen them because I haven’t gone looking for them.

Pibrea · 19/05/2026 12:21

You’re not very bright are you OP?

Scarlettpixie · 19/05/2026 12:21

Spiderbug · 19/05/2026 11:02

Yes I’m not criticising every woman that has ivf btw just the hypocritical ones. I know someone like this disrespected me for being a young mum and then she’s off having nhs ivf. It’s also just socially acceptable to have ivf on the nhs but not to be a teen mums. There will be a lot of hypocrites like what I’ve described and it’s not about everyone that has ivf

Why shouldn't it be socially acceptable to have IVF on the NHS? Are you against IVF?

Spiderbug · 19/05/2026 12:22

Pibrea · 19/05/2026 12:21

Neither are you. Are you pibrea?

You've clearly name changed as I've read this same thing before - you clearly have a huge chip on your shoulder about having a baby at 15......

ainsleysanob · 19/05/2026 12:24

Spiderbug · 19/05/2026 10:48

You can google it. You think cycles of ivf on the nhs aren’t costing the tax payer? Do you know how much ivf costs?

Do you know how restricted IVF on the NHS is? It’s not given out like smarties you know. I was 23 when I had my first of six cycles of IVF - had to pay privately for all 6 because the NHS criteria deemed me too young.

Reachforthestars00 · 19/05/2026 12:24

Spiderbug · 19/05/2026 11:58

Honestly 30. Yeah I know it’s average these days but fertility peaks in your mid twenties. And again I’m only judging those who judge young mums if you don’t then this isn’t about you

30 is old? For someone who did not liked being judged, you are very judgmental of others ...

Bettermuseli · 19/05/2026 12:25

There are some benefit bashers on Mumsnet but not the majority by any means. Without other information I guess that a teenage mum got pregnant accidentally and decided to go ahead rather than terminate, which is understandable.

I am not judging. This is biologically the age fertility starts to fall off. That’s a fact not my own judgement

A biological fact that fertility begins to decline, yes. Not a biological fact that all mums from 30 onwards are old.

This is certainly going to be a very unpopular opinion, but I do not think anyone should be having IVF on the NHS.
That is not what it was set up for.
Call me a Luddite, but if it isn't happening naturally there is probably a good reason.

My friend is having it because a cycle or 2 of IVF will be cheaper in the long run than medicating a child with a degenerative genetic disease and using IVF they can pick out the eggs that are unaffected.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 19/05/2026 12:31

Finally a reason to vote reform 🤣🤣🤣🤣
