I thought they changed the law and you had to be 18 in the UK?

Not everybody around the world lives their lives according to your own personal beliefs. Some cultures practice arranged marriages and if it works for these cultures, who are we to judge? Stop looking at things through a western colonial lense.

It ‘works’ for those ‘cultures’ because it works for the men in those cultures. It doesn’t empower the women in those cultures, it leaves them uneducated and chained to the kitchen sink.

But that is life unfortunately.
I didn’t get the career I wanted but that’s just how it is. In any case. uni isn’t the be all or end all. It’s easier to train and qualify as a adult than ever before.

You presumably still had choices, even if they weren’t the choices you hoped for

I think the whole education system needs a complete overhaul.

To put that much pressure on teenagers, and not to take into account anyones family circumstances is ridiculous.

People think its ridiculous to get married at 16

Do you not think its ridicuous to say to teenagers:

"Exams that you sit once at 16 years old will decide what you can do with the rest of your entire life ."

She can’t just get divorced if it goes pear-shaped though Tyson actually made that quite clear that the way we do it marriage is in for life and no court can undo what God has put together
So if he does turn out to be an absolute prick, she’s stuck with him much like Paris

I dont think "that is life".

I think the current rigid education system makes life a lot harder for people than it needs to be.

There should not be a load of focus on one big exam. It should be more continuous. There should be more paid apprenticships etc

There’s more to the UK than England you know.

BuffetTheDietSlayer · 17/05/2026 16:21

@Scarlettjune Would you approve of children marrying from age 13 if their parents agree and it’s legal or just a traditional ceremony?

CantDoMuch · 17/05/2026 16:25

ThejoyofNC · 17/05/2026 14:05

Usually at 11/12 years old for both.

We simply don't value formal education in the way you do.

Those who want schooling, get it. The percentage of those who do has increased since I was that age. But the vast majority don't.

Yes housework is a female responsibility. Earning money is the men's job.

Can I ask a genuine question? Do people from the traveller community ever want to become doctors, lawyers, teachers, engineers etc? Or do they see those people as part of a separate world?

Just because Tyson said it doesn’t make it true. She isn’t living in a bubble. She may come from a traveller background but they are a celebrity family with a lot more money and status than most. She will know how the world works and if she wants to get divorced, she will. If Tyson and Paris love her as much as they appear to they won’t want her to stay married unhappily.

You wrote

Yes, I chose a career that I enjoy. And I pay a cleaner.

If you don't see how it is flippant, I can't help you.

The point is that you were ABLE to choose a career that you enjoy. Many people do not have the option to choose a career that they enjoy, or afford to have a cleaner

But I wasn’t answering for those people, I was answering for me. Because you asked me a direct question, about my life.

Female genital mutilation for the win then, yes?

Are you asking about Irish Travelers, or Romani?.

Daffodilsinthespring · 17/05/2026 16:28

When I first saw the photos of the wedding, I had no idea who she was and though she was a woman of about 40 not a child.

Jamfirstest · 17/05/2026 16:29

Note that one of the biggest campaigners for changing the law on child marriage in England was a traveller woman.

flagpolesitta · 17/05/2026 16:29

Is gay marriage a thing in traveller communities? Is it acceptable to be openly gay or lesbian? Sorry just a random thought whilst the thread is on the subject of traditions and culture, it just came to mind

SpanThatWorld · 17/05/2026 16:31

AtchinTan · 17/05/2026 16:28

Is the answer different for the 2 communities?

CollectingAllTheACEs · 17/05/2026 16:33

I genuinely wonder what she thought of her wedding night. Travellers don't have sex education and they shield their girls from as much as possible to do with sex, pregnancy, etc. The last guy I dated was a traveller on one side of his family, and his ex a full traveller - their eldest daughter just turned 13 and she still thinks if you want a baby you just go to hospital and pick one up (no idea how they explain the pregnant belly away!). TBH it was one of the reasons I ended it as I would never understand that culture

No I think that is too young. There is a big physical difference between 13 and 16. In my opinion, There is not much physical difference between 16 and 18.

We can all disagree on what we think, which is fair.

When does someone become an adult? The law just selects an age and decides.

I know a woman who hosts students in Switzerland every summer. She said that they are always shocked that they can't go and drink in pubs in the UK. They tell her that in Switzerland, they all go drinking in pubs at 15/16.

As it is in Scotland and always has been. Scotland is part of the UK.

Lifeomars · 17/05/2026 16:36

m1ghtl1ke · 17/05/2026 14:25

Honestly I think 18 is also too young.

When I look back at who I was with when I was 16 and who I was with when I was 18 I am so glad I did not even entertain the idea of marrying any of them. i am sure it was mutual!

Well, I would be genuinely interested to hear your experience. Maybe someone else could answer for other communities.

Whichever community that poster was from. As she said ‘We simply don't value formal education in the way you do’. Whatever ‘we’ is I guess.

Not really. The odd one that does is applauded.
