AIBU to resent the cost of maintaining blonde highlights?

Lifeisbetterinflipflops8 · 16/05/2026 12:16

Does anyone else hate spending so much money on maintaining blonde highlights??

Does anyone have any good recommendations for hair lightening shampoos/sprays?

You could choose not to spend the money on maintaining blonde highlights.
I resent the cost of glasses. I can’t really choose not to spend money on them.

Just have your hair natural? Celebrate your gorgeousness.

Mclaren10 · 16/05/2026 12:28

What colour is your natural hair?

There's colour mousses you can use but probably only work on greys if you want blonde highlights.

Arrowthroughtheknee · 16/05/2026 12:28

Pointless to resent something no one is making you do.

5dollah · 16/05/2026 12:50

I gave up doing blonde highlights and i haven't missed them but my own hair is quite blonde with a little white in it.

PygmyOwl · 16/05/2026 12:51

What would your natural hair colour be OP?

TheyGrewUp · 16/05/2026 12:54

I want blonde highlights (and brown ones and beigy ones) because otherwise I'd be patchy grey. £180 every seven weeks. Worth every penny providing there are the pennies available. I'd resent not having the pennies.

This is good advice for those who are “gorgeous “. What about the rest of us?

Lottapianos · 16/05/2026 13:07

I used to have blonde highlights to help blend in my grey. My natural hair colour is brunette, and I got so fed up of the time and money involved, and the endless purple shampoo to stop it all going yellow

I realised that I loved my natural highlights - the silver that was coming through naturally. I stopped colouring my hair 2 years ago and haven't looked back

ButterYellowFlowers · 16/05/2026 13:08

Nobody’s making you spend it… you don’t HAVE to be blonde. It’s a luxury. I say that as someone who dyed their hair for two decades!

I’m back to mousy now because I can’t afford it. Just one of those things

Disturbia81 · 16/05/2026 13:08

Just use box dye, mine costs a £1.99

If you’re not ‘gorgeous’ then being blonde won’t make you any more gorgeous than your natural colour. Brunette, blonde, red or raven-haired are all equally beautiful in isolation.

PennySweeet · 16/05/2026 13:10

No I don't resent spending money on things I want, rather than need.

If I did, I'd never enjoy anything I treat myself to.

Konstantine8364 · 16/05/2026 13:12

You could try and find a cost effective hairdresser. I'm in Manchester and in the city centre my cut and half head blonde highlights would probably be £200 as they make you have a blow dry which I find totally pointless. My hairdresser out in one of the towns is fab, let's me leave with wet hair and only charges £90. I get loads of compliments on my hair and probably go every 3 months or so. He is booked up months in advance and doesn't take on new customers, but you could definitely ask some friends whose hair you like and try and get some lower prices!

This is all well and good for people with those hair colours... Mine is mousy and just plain boring!! Id be happy if it was proper brunette, dark or blonde but it's just nothing so I've coloured it one way or another since I was 15

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 16/05/2026 13:14

Can you still get Sun-In?

AllTheChaos · 16/05/2026 13:16

Yeah, @ButterYellowFlowers, like @Konstantine8364 i died my hair for years because it was a faded mousy colour that never looked nice! Now I am greying and that looks even worse, but I can’t afford to dye it anymore so just keep it tied back. It’s incredibly aging to have hair this colour, and makes my skin look grey - nothing gorgeous about it alas!

So had I. I’m mousy too and now I’ve stopped colouring it I’ve realised it’s actually really nice… classy and soft on my colouring. Way better than grown out blonde.

tiramisugelato · 16/05/2026 13:23

YABU to resent something that's entirely optional.

That doesn’t work if you want to go lighter and need bleach

Funnywonder · 16/05/2026 13:28

You resent the cost of something you don’t even need? I think you already know the answer to your weird question.

Girlwithavibe · 16/05/2026 13:29

The best way is less is more so actually less being coloured and less blonde so instead of bright go abit more warmer so it looks sunkissed ! I'm a stylist I do my daughter's a french balayage with baby lights and teasy lights and some wider weaves but all back combed /teased last time we did it was last August 2025 and she recently just had a refresh she is naturally mousy it looks very natural but very good !

Morepositivemum · 16/05/2026 13:31

As someone going a dirty horrible grey because my hair is too sensitive for most dyes and I can’t afford to get it done I fully disagree with people saying it’s not essential for some people. Horrible looking in the mirror and hating your hair, makes you feel undone

A bag on your head should do it 😂

IDontHateRainbows · 16/05/2026 13:38

Id love to afford highlights but make do with a box dye every 2 months ,( not highlights, i adapted my hair colour to my budget)
