AIBU to resent the cost of maintaining blonde highlights?

Does anyone else hate spending so much money on maintaining blonde highlights??

Does anyone have any good recommendations for hair lightening shampoos/sprays?

I've started using lightening spray after many years of highlights. I have light to medium brown hair.

I spray it on the regrowth and then brush it thoroughly so it blends into the highlighted area. I did it gradually every day for maybe five days and now I do it once a month. I don't overdo the blonde so that the roots aren't obvious.

I'm actually really really pleased with the results and wish I'd done it sooner. It's probably more golden than some people would like but purple shampoo helps. Also Pantene bond repair (£5 on Amazon) is the best conditioner I've ever used. In the end, I just couldn't face sitting in a salon for three hours trying to make conversation. I didn't mind the South African hairdresser who had a black belt in karate but all the others have been very dull!

Which spray please and is it the tub or bottle version of the conditioner that you recommend? Thank you 😊

This is good advice for those who are “gorgeous “. What about the rest of us?

We’re all lovely in our uniqueness, you don’t need to change how you are for some perceived attractiveness, often dictated by sleazy men.

WhatNextImScared · 16/05/2026 17:43

YANBU. I wish I’d never started with them but I had to do something as I was already dying dark brown which was needing to be done almost 2 weekly. It’s lower maintenance in terms of time than that as I let it go a long time (I’m about 35 per cent grey). But the cost is ridiculous.

i wish i’d never dyed at all post pandemic and just let it grow out naturally. Stupid me.

Try your local FE college the salon in my nearest one charges £20 for a full head of foils

I am brunette but with almost 50% grey in patches. I had been box dying brown but hated the white roots. I've started having blonde highlights, £200 every four months. My hairdresser is excellent and does it is a clever way which matches my natural white so thw regrowth looks dark. Worth every penny to me at around £50 a month.

Polkadotpompom · 16/05/2026 17:53

I couldn't justify it anymore, and am now growing it out.

It's a luxury we can choose or opt out of.

@Girlwithavibe that sounds really beautiful!

Been doing my own highlights for years using the Jerome Russell kit. If the bleach is left on long enough, it does a decent job.

Is it easy to use?

Flomingho · 16/05/2026 18:15

You would need to decide whether you want to persevere with the blonde colour. You can wing it with a home dye if doing a brunette block colour or red but blonde home dying rarely works properly imo.

Is it easy to use?

It's super easy. I have mousey / dark brown hair. I wash my hair the day before doing it. I pull the hair through the cap provided. Bleach is on for one hour or around 1 hour 10 mins at the most. Wash off. Job done and looks as good as when I had it done at a salon. Timings will differ depending on hair type and colour. I built up to 1 hr 10 as it was slightly brassy at 50 mins.. so I added 10 mins each time I did it until I worked out the optimum time for my hair.

What colour is your natural hair?

There's colour mousses you can use but probably only work on greys if you want blonde highlights.

It’s a darkish blonde? Bit of a nothing colour, so perhaps lightening it a bit might be enough!

Pointless to resent something no one is making you do.

It’s resenting the cost, rather than the actual act 👍

You resent the cost of something you don’t even need? I think you already know the answer to your weird question.

Have you had a bad day 😬

Why on earth would you resent spending tons of money on something which is your choice; which nobody has forced you to do and which is a luxury rather than a necessity.

I save my resentment for rising energy and housing costs.

It’s resenting how much it costs 👍

Try local home hairdressers, I pay £45 for half a head of highlights including blow dry.

Notarealblonde · 16/05/2026 21:41

My daughter does mine for me, especially the back. I use jerome russell its £6. Im happy with that.

Thanks - I’ll definitely have to look into this!

I spent 18 months growing out my blonde highlights. I looked dreadful - my mousy hair with grey streak was ageing and looked thin and poor. I went back to highlights 3 weeks ago and have no regrets. It is really expensive though.

Tonissister · 17/05/2026 09:32

I use John Frieda spray. Spray just onto roots of wet hair and comb through with a wide toothed comb to create streaked highlights. Blow dry. Occasionally it starts looking too brassy and then I just wash with a purple shampoo to reduce the yellowness. Usually it looks natural as if streaked by the sun.

ParmaVioletTea · 17/05/2026 09:34

You resent a deliberate choice you made?

Bonkers

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/05/2026 09:43

I used to resent the cost (and the time!) for doing mine (natural blonde but going darker - unless I’d had a fortnight on a beach in the sun!)

I started brightening it up with John Frieda’s ‘Go Blonder’ spray - very gradual, so never needed any roots done. You apply to wet hair, the dryer activates it. A bottle lasts me for ages.

Many years later I still use it every few weeks - I am pretty ancient now but have never gone grey - it’s genetic, from DM - what they used to call a ‘strawberry blonde’ - who still wasn’t properly grey when she died at 97.

StrangewaysHereWeCome · 17/05/2026 09:53

Ask your hairdresser for something that will grow out better? I have balayage and specifically requested as natural a blend as possible while still getting a decent colour lift. Hairdresser did a great job, I can honestly get away with an annual top up now.
